Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

What do you wanna bet that if we hadn't seen the leak, today's POTD comment would set Playable Tingle speculation on fire?

Man, I wish. Zelda could use a fresh rep anyway and he's appeared in several games, as well as his own spinoffs. He has his balloon, maps, confetti, could drop bombs, could summon his brothers or whoever they were from Wind Waker...there's a decent amount of moveset potential. I think he'd be a fun addition to the roster.

Yes I'm serious. I'd probably take him over Toon Link.

Pic of the day. The legendary hero Riki appears as an Assist Trophy and in Shulk's Final Smash!! As an Assist Trophy, he uses many arts like Happy Happy, Freezinate, and Yoink! He sounds a bit like Tingle…but don't worry, Tingle will make an appearance too.
By the way, a cursor will appear above Assist Trophies and Pokémon to indicate which fighter is its ally. Now you can tell right off the bat who it belongs to!!
So he is an AT, interesting. I thought for sure from his dialogue that he was Shulk specific.

But what does that mean for Reyn's chances now? ;_;

How the heck is Yoink going to work I wonder?

For those who have never played Xenoblade, Yoink is like the equivalent to Steal in Final Fantasy games, except it's not just items he can "steal" health, strength, agility, as well as Experience Points.

Also, I love Riki, but it does suck it couldn't have been a different character.

EDIT: Also, Happy Happy, that's his art that raises the talent gauge right? Have no idea how they'll translate that into Smash

Don't worry, if a B-series like Metroid can get three assist trophies, an A-series like Xenoblade should be able to include the whole party as assist trophies.

If Metroid is a B series, I think Xenoblade is a D series (I'm assuming we're talking sales wise here).

Awesome update! Cool that Riki has variation of moves as an AT.

You know, Impa would be one of only two non-white/Asian human (or human-like) characters in Smash if she was playable. Miis don't count :v

Sakurai really ought to add her and Doc Louis. Maybe Great Tiger, too.

What you call gameplay flaws I call accidental challenges.

neither is part of the formula of a good game.

toss that on top of the pile also including big empty shoebox level design that's virtually impossible to wrap your head around, excessive collectathon gameplay and miles and miles of backtracking empty shoebox levels just so you can hit that switch/find that character barrel/collect that one blueprint that only lanky can touch for some reason it doesn't add up to a good game

Toon Link is one of my mains, so no way I'd trade him for Tingle, but I'd welcome him with open arms since, as you say, fellow does offer the potential for a fun moveset. I mean, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was pretty indifferent toward Bowser Jr. getting in (if not actively against it) but his inclusion in the Koopa Clown Car is one of the most original movesets the series has had, and makes me be very eager to try him out a.s.a.p. It's all in the execution.

Random coins to open a single door somewhere in the game (Battle Arena, Nintendo, and Rare coins)? Having to comb an entire level 5 times to get everything? Broken minigames? Having to backtrack to a checkpoint barrel when you discovered something new in the level, but were the wrong character, and therefore unable to interact with it?

If those were accidental, so was tripping in Brawl.

Great Tiger's a weird choice. If you're gonna pick another playable Punch-Out!!! character, your best bet is King Hippo. Hippo's got one of the most consistent appearance records and has extra fame for his Captain N appearance.

Smash as a whole kind of shines a light on some of the gaps that Nintendo has in regards to racial representation, I can agree with that. However, I have no interest in lame characters just for the sake of representation. Adding Doc Louis is doing me no favors and I assume others feel the same about a character like Great Tiger.

I for one am seriously hoping for Elite Beat Agents to be an AT. Each character who picks them up gets their own HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! drawing/scream flashing on screen for a second, before they enter the stage and, much to Falcon's gusto, show us their moves, unleashing sound waves a lá DK's FS that hit any players in the way.

Haha. King Hippo would have the worst recovery imaginable.

Do it, Nintendo.

There can be more than one AT from the same series

make him be almost impossible to knock off...but have literally no recovery

That would be interesting...and completely overpowered in combination with customization since the recovery punishment on items which grant reduced knockback wouldn't bother him in the least.

If Punch-Out!! ever gets a second representative, it will be somebody like King Hippo or Bald Bull. Adding Doc Louis as the token black guy doesn't help promote racial diversity at all. Maybe Nintendo should start by acknowledging that Japan isn't the only country on Earth.

This is patently untrue. King Hippo is in two out of the five Punch-Out!! series games, Great Tiger is in three and predates him. He also has significantly more moveset potential than King Hippo, who has like, three moves in the two games he's appeared in. Like I said in another comment:

Great Tiger is Robin
King Hippo is Chrom

AKA, King Hippo is the popular boring character, while Great Tiger is the surprising fun character.

I don't see how adding King Hippo is any less token than Doc >_> It seems like a silly assertion that a popular character like Doc Louis is token, when Nintendo saw fit to make a Club Nintendo reward that was all about fighting him for the first and only time.

Bald Bull appears more times than any Punch-Out boxer bar Little Mac, and they're still tied until Smash 4 is released.

I'd be cool with Bald Bull.

All these arguments over Punch Out characters when the obvious choice is Glass Joe.
Sorry France, he ain't gonna cut it in Smash.

You're forgetting something very important.

I don't know whether I'm more happy or sad about this .gif. On one hand, they nailed Dark Samus so perfectly! With that exhausted crouch animation after each attack, the Phazon powers, and how different she is from Samus.

On the other hand, that would've made such a PERFECT character!!! I wouldn't even need Ridley if Dark Samus was a character who played exactly like that!

You guys are making me wonder who they'll choose for a Punch-Out!! AT, if there's gonna be any to begin with. IIRC, Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man and Bald Bull have had the most appearances in the franchise (hell, Bald Bull appears in the spinoff Arm Wrestling). I suppose it'd be either those guys, King Hippo, or Glass Joe, going off by popularity.

Bald Bull is a boring choice though. :v As a Punch-Out!! fan, I want a character that people know (Great Tiger, Bald Bull, King Hippo, Doc Louis, Glass Joe) AND a character that is added for more than being well-known (Great Tiger). He's the only one of those five characters that effortlessly sets himself apart.

Maybe we'll see her as playable in 6 years T_T
