I guess if Riki can have multiple roles, that opens the door to other Xenoblade characters. I still want the option of using Dunban as an alt or clone, even if it has to come through DLC.

Because they were trying to cover up the steaming pile of crap that was DKC64 with "new" characters that were derivative of Dixie and Kiddie to try to get you to ignore its many, many flaws.

Rare always had a thing for bringing new characters into Donkey Kong Country. Right up until their buyout. DK64 having new characters was no surprise and certainly wasn't done for that reason. Despite it being a little tedious for my taste, it's not a bad game. Lanky is probably the only Kong I'd like to see return though. Not a huge fan of Tiny nor Chunky.

All these little tweaks really go a long way into making this fighter better. Good update.

when the characters have all the powers of dixie and kiddie and are randomly closely related to them (tiny is dixie's sister, chunky is kiddie's brother), it says to me that they were seriously looking for a hook for the game and "characters" was the best they could come up with

They're very different.

Tingle is a delusional slave driver who does nothing but impede your progress. On top of being an incredibly useful party member, Riki is a hard-working father of 14.
