Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

So it seems that the reveal I was most interested in happens when I'm in the land of no internet. I smell a conspiracy!
I'm very happy, though.

Hmm hmm.

Very well, I shall partake of this thing. I think Skype or something similar would work best as you said, just because it makes incorporating text chat easy just so we're super inclusive.

Because in SmashGAF we love everyone and would never want to exclude <3

Sorry to keep hogging the top of the pages guys! I mentioned this a while back, but I'm now more officially moving forward with trying to get a voice chat group going. And since it's me, here's a graphic!

I'm interested. Never really used Skype though, it has text too? And decent free features?

Haha, I never noticed that.

after I saw this, I knew it was totally Shaft lel gotta love animu gafers

and yeah, I don't know why people got so butthurt by her T&A shoots, then NoA censor the shit out of some games and yet the same people complain how censorship it's unnecesary

SmashGAF is love, Love is SmashGAF.

Cool! I'll put you on the list and update you as we get closer to launch. Same for anyone else who wants to be part of this.

I don't use it all that often, but with the MK8 stuff is seemed to work really well and we were all using the free version. We had 8 people in a group chat with no issue.

Wouldn't something like a mumble server be better than Skype?
It would. Even ignoring Skype having WAY less features than mumble, it is also a fucking piece of shit as software. I get constant disconnects (every 5min or so) and the program just randomly freezes for a minute sometimes, all problems I don't have with mumble or teamspeak.

And when I want to shut down my PC Skype is thinking it's important and prevents the shutdown, so I have to klick "Ignore open programs and shut down regardless" EVERY SINGLE TIME thanks to Skype. FUCK SKYPE

Never heard of Mumble or teamspeak, will look into them!
o.O

Mumble doesn't make text chatters very easy to include in the conversation, but it'd probably work too.

It's just that skype has pretty high latency, it's lower quality than mumble and mumble has push to talk for people who don't want to constantly be heard if they have other people in the room or something.

E: Good to see there's at least a few people that share my hate for the low quality experience that is Skype.

When I brought this up initially, there was a pretty good response of people who wanted to be involved. Being able to communicate with the people I'm playing with is really a big part of gaming, so I'd really love to set up a way for us to bypass the inevitable lack of chat on the 3DS version; hopefully the Wii U will have chat built in, but if not there's only more reason to do this.

I'm still not 100% on what program/site I will want to use, but for now I'm planning on Skype. If we can organize a list of who wants to chat, you should be able to just make a friends list and create a group chat with whoever is in your party. I'm also hoping to host a tournament for the Wii U version (more on that soon!), so if spectator mode is any good, this would make watching the matches a hell of a lot more exciting and make people in the community a lot more personable.

Also, if you don't like the thought of your voice being heard or are hearing impaired in anyway, this could also be great for just holding text conversations; probably a lot better than trying to talk to a group of people in the madness that will be the OT at launch.

So, all that to say: I wanna hear you guys talk! Smash just isn't complete to me if I can't have someone cursing at me while I counter with my own vulgarities. Let me know if you'd be interested in this or have any ideas on how to improve this idea. I really love this community and hopefully this has the potential to strengthen it.

I'm 100% on board. I'm sure at least one person wants to hear about my vibe lol

What about google hangout. Have heard good things about that.
Considered that, but a lot of people don't want to make google accounts for that, or at least they didn't for MK8's thing.

I guess I might get involved if it's Skype since It have text feature.
For sure man, you're on of the reasons text is a high priority; wouldn't be SmashGAF without you!

Awesome! Gotta have dat vibe.

Also Mumble does have text if I remember so it isn't really a big deal.

It does, but it's pushed to the side and by default it does text to speech which can be alarming, annoying and will talk over people.

Easy to turn off, but it's not front and center in the conversation window like on Skype, where it'll also log and show it for when you join later. I've got no particular affinity for Skype (especially now that they've killed off Skypekit for no good reason), but that's one of the few things it does somewhat decently.

I'm sure people would rather create google accounts than freaking Microsoft/Skype accounts they'd need for Skype.

Skype really, really sucks. It's the worst. It's bloated as hell, takes literally minutes to start up and disconnects every so often. Hangouts would be alright, but Mumble or Teamspeak would be ideal, IMO. All of them support text chat, as far as I'm aware.

So, I'm a bit confused looking at the Mumble website. Is it free to use, but you have to pay to host a server?

Looking into Teamspeak now, though in my experience Skype has been fine. Then again, I'm so limited in what I've used I just might not be used to the good stuff.

ts3client_main.jpg

Teamspeak 3's UI looks like it would be perfect. The client itself is free and we would have to rent a cheap server (or turn someone's PC into a server :P) anyways if we wanted to use mumble. Might be worth a consideration.

What does "cheap" entail? That could work, depending on the price.

As long as there's also text chat, then I'm totally on board, Oric. Skype sounds good.
Text is definitely a priority. I want everyone to have a chance to be involved. Haha, I'm being very Nintendo about this. :P

EDIT: 2 posts in a row. This is why I'm at the top of the post counts...-_-

I may not mind paying for a mumble server for maybe 70 slots or so, but it wouldn't be until the WiiU version releases and it probably wouldn't be GAF specific considering I'm part of two communities.

Unless anyone else has their own server or was willing to pay for one.

I'm for this. Half my game is trash talking with Jiggly impersonations >.>

I'm all for the idea! Skype would be preferred.

It got buried on the last page but how would people feel about an Elgato HD capture card as the first prize for a tournament? I need to get a new one that does 60fps for Smash anyway so it's either sell the old one or give it away, I've only had it for about 2 months so it's in pretty top condition.

Easiest solution if a server or cost is an issue would be setting up a general Skype chatroom thing and letting people just branch out from there into smaller group chats for playing the game or whatever.

I personally like Mumble but Skype doesn't involve setting up a server.

I just looked at the prices and...they're not that unreasonable. I wasn't planning on getting into any kind of payment stuff, but if we get enough people we could maybe have donations or something. Big maybe on that one.

Good idea. The amount of work I put into this really depends on the Wii U's chat situation, though I want to make it for 3DS users regardless.

Depends on the number of slots we want to have. I found a server with 32 slots for ~6€/month or 50 slots for ~8€/month, and that's just one of the first few search results.

Of course dividing payments is always an issue, but once that's figured out the server would be virtually free.

Depending on how big this gets it might not be terribly unreasonable to host our own.

But if we're talking more than 15 people it's probably a good idea to look into hosting options, which are generally pretty cheap.

I probably wouldn't mind talking to you guys a few times. I had a roommate once who spent his days (or nights rather, he was nocturnal), sitting on his fat ass in a wheelie chair yelling at people over Xbox live though, so I don't think I'd ever want to make a habit of it.

Yeah, let's see how many people end up wanting to do this. Judging so far, we're probably going above 15. I don't mind the idea of people chipping in some money, but I also don't want to have people who can't donate not get to come in or anything. Definitely something to think on.

Hi guys! I'm new here, but I've been reading posts on these threads since the recent character select screen leak all the way up to now, and figured I might contribute.

My favorite Nintendo character is Olimar, but I can't play as him at all in Brawl (hoping to change that with the updated SSB4 moveset). I do main my second favorite Nintendo character, Toon Link.
I always like playing with all items, random characters, and random stages.

My most wanted newcomers were Paper Mario (from Paper Mario), Yarn Kirby (from Kirby's Epic Yarn, Chibi Robo (from Chibi-Robo!), Savvy Stylist (from Style Savvy) and Doshin the Giant (from Doshin the Giant). As you can see, I got none of them, but I did get Little Mac, who was #6 most wanted, so I guess that's cool (he had the best reveal trailer too).

I don't mind seeing Wolf and Lucas go
since they're both semi-clones
and I already expected Snake to leave, even though he was an awesome addition and a great character.
However, I'm really bummed about the Ice Climbers: veterans from Melee and Brawl, unique characters, and the sole representatives of their series... may we meet again in another life...
or in DLC.

So if this is the starting roster, who are the first three newcomers you'll try, and who are the first three veterans?

smash-bros-3ds-starting-roster-656x789.png

Pretty late, but I like this question, and I have questions to answer.

Newcomers:

Little Mac - Is he amazing or does he completely suck? We'll have to see
Megaman - Though my most loved Megaman is the Battle Network Megaman hehe
(please don't hurt me)
he looks like he could be a top tier character, and I want to see if he feels good.
Wii Fit Trainer - This one I didn't think I would care about, but I think Wii Fit Trainer could surprise us all! And she's grown on me.

Veterans:

Captain Falcon - Does the Knee of Justice feel super satisfying? Will he be as bad as in he was in Brawl?
Yoshi - Project M Yoshi is a beast with the eggs, but will eggs be effective in Smash 4 or not?
Jigglypuff - Is Rest easy or hard to pull off? (because as we all know, Jigglypuff will be the first unlockable character by playing through classic mode once :P)

If Jigglypuff, doesn't count, Samus, but I know I'll be disappointed because the fact that Samus is so much stronger in Metroid than Smash will always be in the back of my mind.

Edit: Second "Top of the Page," yes! My EXP is rising!

I'd definitely be in on this. I can see myself playing a lot of Smash online with you guys and so having a chatroom would be awesome.

I saw a pic in here yesterday or the day before that looked like it was from All Star mode, with characters from between certain years about to be fought. Where did that come from?

Awesome! Also, I added you as well Sponge.
