Persona 5 also launching on PS4, releasing 2015 ["waifu"/"husbando" crap = ban]

I've never played a Persona game before, should I start one up before 5 hits?

and if so, which one?
To get you up to speed to what 5 will likely resemble more, start with P3 then P4 - get the handheld versions of each if possible.

Only play P1 and P2 if you like the latter 2, and only play P1 if you can play the PSP version otherwise don't even bother.

Fuck I can't wait.

I bought a 3DS XL mostly for Persona Q and now PS4 is getting P5 as well. I was worried it'd be stuck on PS3 only, so this is amazing news.

Maybe we could discuss which characters we like and why without constantly using those words?

I would think its more than just those words that people take issue with.

Again, it's not likely to dominate the thread until months after everyone has already finished the game when it will have already been moved over to community. At that point, I don't see the point of making it bannable.

Depends on what you like. It's an addictive turn-based RPG with visual novel, life-sim and dungeon crawler elements.

4 is an amazing game, but it might be hard to go back to 3 afterwards, which is a good game in its own right.

Persona 1 and 2 are largely irrelevant to the modern series. Play them later if you get really into it but don't start with them.

If you only want to play one game, play Persona 4. If you're willing to commit to two games, then start with 3. I like 3 better, but 4 inarguably has the better mechanics. 3 can be tough to appreciate if you play 4 first.

Agreed with this. Played P3P first, loved it. Played P4G, loved it as well. Tried to return to P3P to do FemMC route? Just can't get into it quite the same anymore. So if you've got time, play 3 first.

If you have a Vita, Persona 4 Golden. Tried it out in February and it turned out to be the only thing I played all month. It pretty much justified my Vita purchase on its own considering how much I played the game. I got one because I had some PS+ games on my account and there was a deal (got it for 125$) but Persona 4 Golden caught me by surprise by how it's now one of my all-time favourite games.

If you don't have a Vita, then I'd say Persona 4 still. Going back to Persona 3 is a bit tougher, but you'll know your way around combat and stuff better. Going straight into Persona 3 might turn you off compared to Persona 4 - the latter is more welcoming. And if you like P4 then you'll probably want to give P3 a try.

Edit: Well, I guess starting with P3 is not a bad idea too, but the lack of checkpoint and variety in dungeon design compared to P4's extravagant dungeons seems like it would have been harder for me to get into the series had I played that first. Also, the PSP version of Persona 3 has point-and-click navigation. No running around 3D worlds like you would in the PS2 version or in P4. I loved P3P still, but it's good to know Persona games usually have that running around and aren't point-and-click visual novel style games.

Even though it would be the 4th time I've bought the game, I wish they would re-release Persona 3 on w/ FES and Portable's features combined. That game needs to be experienced with the original 3D models and the full-party control gameplay.

Would give newcomers a proper starting point in terms of mechanics and story too.

Hopefully Omega doesn't spoil the game this time.
Spoiled Persona 4's main culprit for me back on the PS2 lol.

Two HUGE P4 things that have been spoiled for me

Seriously, P4 spoilers, do not click:
Adachi is the killer.........................................................
Teddy is a shadow....................................................................

Knowing those two, is it still worth playing through P4? Really been meaning to, especially with 5 right around the corner, but spoilers just really ruin the experience for me :/

Yep, still worth it! Still loads you don't know.

Dunno if this has been talked about, but what sort of changes would you folks like to see with Social Links?

I think the biggest necessity would be to explore same sex romantic relationships. Though I identify as heterosexual, I feel the addition would be wonderful and, if written well, could be quite poignant.

Another thing more closely related to having with S.Links is to have enough free time to complete them. Apparently Golden makes dealing with S.Links easier by allowing the player to play through months skipped in P4 Vanilla. However, I don't know how much easier it makes getting max S.Links. I personally needed a guide to pull it off in P4 Vanilla.

I mean if you're that upset about it, don't play, but that doesn't really ruin the experience. And they aren't even the final twists. Especially the second spoiler, that's kind of a given in the game anyway.

Persona 1/2 are completely different than 3/4 in terms of tone, general structure, and even the combat. Biggest shock for most people who have only played the more recent games would be the demon negotiation system which completely changes how you approach combat. You also have to pick formations. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are great games, but they're very far removed from what Persona has become. The other big difference is the dungeons themselves which are viewed from the first person and significantly more complicated than the random but easily understood layouts of 3 and 4. I never got close to finishing Persona 1, even on the PSP. Combat is really slow, overworld incredibly annoying, and from what I played the story wasn't very interesting. Maybe I'll return to it one of these days.

Would be neat to see demon negotiation return for Persona 5 given how prevalent it is throughout the rest of the SMT series.

I'll be getting a ps4 version then. I hope to see some S link improvements such as more interactivity and perhaps a group S link dependant on who you bring into dungeons the most.

Even knowing those spoilers, actually playing the game and experiencing it as a whole is definitely still worth it.

Another thing I'd like related to Social Links is for a return back to how P3 reversed Arcana a lot quicker than P4s.

Yeah, folks love their harems and such, but I think it would be refreshing to see that actually punished like it would in reality for once.

I would start with Persona 4 Golden, If you dont have a Vita then get Persona 3 FES on PSN if you have a PS3. The story in Persona 3 is very important and I would definitely recommend 3 before playing 4 and 5.

Imagine it's pretty difficult so I have no expectations but I really wish they would heavily expand the social link system all together. Make it so that your relationships actually matter in the context of the story. In Persona 4 I could be dating the entire crew and when we gathered together nothing changed(outside of a few minor additions in Persona 4 Golden) No one else in your group seems to know you're in a relationship, where such things would obviously heavily change a group dynamic in real life. If I'm dating Kanji's crush then he should knowledge it at some point!

Yes, very much so. Those are just scraping on the surface.

Thanks guys, going to try to finish 3/4 bit by bit, I know the gameplay's a huge part of it, but story spoilers really dampen the experience for me.

And just thought of this too:
Something about the gas station clerk, he's one of the main bad guys or something.

Man, screw /v/... :/

Given that they took them out of P3, I doubt they'd go back. Or maybe they'll go back just so they can take it out in the remastered version later on. :p

Also, I really, really hope that there is a female option and that this is a stupid Mass Effect thing where they insist on promoting the game with a generic male lead.

Same sex relationships would be great. I'm a straight male but I'm all for more variety and inclusion in my games!

As mentioned before I'd like the game to better acknowledge your social links and the stage you're at with different characters, whether you're in a relationship with them or not etc. Being able to tick someone off, reverse a social link and having that be reflected in main story dialogue would be pretty awesome too. I agree with your point about having more time for s.links too. People might say it makes the game too easy but following a day by day guide to max out all your s.links in one go isn't fun. At all.

Also, a social link where the girl rejects you.

Precisely. I think it could be done. Maybe I'm downplaying the amount of work required to do so, but it could be done.

None of it even has to be voiced. I'd be content with reading text boxes of my P5 crew slowly growing to hate me for being a man-whore.

I would love this to come back.

I wonder how many PS4’s Atlus just sold for Sony?

Anecdotal answer: At least one. To me.

You speak the truth. This, more than anything else is what I’m hoping for them to overall in Persona 5, assuming they keep they social link aspect at all.

That would encourage me to do multiple playthroughs.

My main main gripe with P3. It was much better in Persona 4G altough still lacking.

Playing through Persona 1, I do find that combat can be slow unless you have the tarot cards of the demons.
Once you have their demon cards you can pretty much skip battling them altogether.

However, like you said, it is very different from Persona 3 and 4.
No social links (no direct ones, anyway) and the story basically progresses by going to straight to one dungeon after another.
You have to have a different mindset when you play Persona 1/2.

I still Persona 1/2 got more recognition though.

That would encourage me to do multiple playthroughs.

I always assumed (probably not true though) that Catherine's main story stuff was a response to the people dating everyone in Persona 4. Maybe they'll bring back the broken social links from P4 (I think it was only Ai that had it, but originally it could happen to Yosuke too).

It will come up in the non-story bits quite a bit. If you make a date with Ai, sometimes Yukiko will come and butt in if you are in a romance S-link with her. And if they're not in your party, Chie and Yukiko will comment about the fact that they've both been in your room. And yeah, Golden adds the Valentines thing.

I think the problem is that, like what happened with The Walking Dead, there are just too many variables to account for and I'd rather they didn't try than to come up with something massively disappointing like what Telltale ended up doing.

I'm punished enough during that valentine day. gotdamn, I think I'm sticking to 1 girl for my first P5 playthrough this time

That is the one thing I do remember in my PS2 playthrough. Was trying to rank up Ai one day when Yukiko suddenly showed up and wasted my day. Had no other similar situations pop up though and it was never brought up again.

And I don't know, I'd rather there be at least small comments rather than nothing at all. Imagine it is really hard to pull of those variables together, but imagine the replayability if they pulled it off!

I still Persona 1/2 got more recognition though.
I really enjoy P2: IS/EP but the first game has never been able to capture my attention for whatever reason. It just feels old wheras I played Innocent Sin on the PSP recently and it's still fun.

Also, to not only focus on ways to punish the player, I think to go along with the idea of relationships being better fit into the context of the game's story, there should be acknowledgement of the protagonist being in a relationship through all its stages. Imagine folks being surprised you and Yukiko (as an example. Not pushing the waifu agenda.
Or ami?!
) being in a relationship. Then in cutscenes, mostly ones outside of the main storyline and maybe a few in the main quest if it's possible, have the characters comment on the two of you and how you both change.

Shit, make it a gameplay element to be used in battle. Having Yukiko in the party as your girlfriend could make the both of you crit more or strengthen fire attacks.

I feel like S.Links is vast enough to be explored and to have fun with. P4 did well having the level of your S.Links make a difference in battle. I think we'll be seeing more of that, and even better, in P5.

Or, take the idea and run it to its logical (?) conclusion with a polyamorous relationship. An actual healthy polyamorous relationship, not ‘lol Harem anime’ nonsense.

Ok, now I’m dreaming. What I'd really like is for this to be the game that starts bring in the various dangling plot threads from the ends pf P1-4, plus Q into something bigger than the sum of their parts.

I'd prefer they keep the games somewhat self contained. I trust the writers to pull of something amazing but I don't really want something that heavily requires knowledge of past games to understand.
