Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

WOAH WOAH WOAH

ACTUAL IMPORTANT NEWS TIME

D1 was talking on his stream about the Wii U version at PAX. He says he was using Pikachu and trying to space forward airs. If you don't know what I'm talking about, lets say Pikachu is facing left. You space a fair by jumping, hitting left on the c stick, then holding right on the analog stick. This allows the character to weave back, usually to get out of your opponent's range.

Anyways, he tried this with the c stick, and Pikachu barely weaved back. Then he tried it again with just the A button and analog stick... and apparently Pikachu had WAY more aerial control. That is REALLY weird. Basically, the game is acting differently depending on your method of input, even though you're doing the same action. That's really strange. Kinda sounds like a glitch, honestly.

It's 15:00 into this video.

Was waiting for this to go up. I don't even know what to think with this one (though that might also be because I'm tired as hell right now). As someone who does the large majority of spacing with aerials with direction + A, this sounds strange.

The problem is that post 2006 the term casual has become a derogatory term in the world of gaming (heaven knows why). It implies someone of less ability and thus instantly causes a rift. No one wants to be seen as lesser and thus is fight for their own reputation. When a label is enough of a catalyst to cause arguments there will always be fights.

That's why I suggested coming up with terms like serious vs non-serious. Using serious can then include those who have a high interest in Smash but not necessarily an interest in the tournament scene (i.e. their interest may be in the Nintendo fan service side of things). The terms also have no implication of skill thus both sides are on a neutral level.

Yeah I can agree with this, I also like "enthusiast".

I do think a different "label" is probably needed since the FGC and tournament players in general tend to not be politically correct at times and that should probably change as it expands.

It's not so much that we don't like being called casual players because casual players are lesser players, because that's kinda true, it's that the word casual is being misused on people that aren't casual.

For example, calling a nerd a nerd is fine because it's true, but calling someone who doesn't play sports a nerd may bother them because they know it's not true.

I know that analogy sucks, but it's the best I could come up with.

Yeah I can see that, since it's sort of a blanket term that's used for "casual player who barely plays the game" to "enthusiast that loves the game and all its nuances but doesn't necessarily go to tournaments". I just don't think there should be that much blowing up about it. I'm not disagreeing that there should be a better term for it.

Okay, I see where you're coming from. My opinion on the "pro" community remains the same, but as always I recognize that there are certainly exceptions.

But let me make it perfectly clear that I know there are people who are just as bad on the "casual" side, and I hate them just as much. Anyone who has or would ever use the term "tourneyfag" is not someone I would ever associate with. I have and would never imply that it's okay for "us" to use those kinds of slurs to describe "them." I HATE that shit.

That's good, though I also don't think it's fair to say that the pro community as a whole are a bunch of jerks and there are exceptions as it's pretty much the other way around. The jerks just tend to be more vocal.

YAY ALL STAR MODE. ICE CLIMBERS AND LUCAS HAVE A CHANCE

...right?

NOOOOOO

Also, Game and Watch is missing here. So clearly that All-Stars photo before (that was missing Zero Suit Samus, Palutena and Pit) doesn't deconfirm Ridley!!!!!!!!

YEEEEESSSSS

It's been a while since I played through it, but I'm pretty sure in Melee All-Star at least you didn't play against characters you hadn't unlocked, right? I have about 0 hope for Ridley, but yeah, I don't think All-Star Mode screens mean much either way.

Edit: nvm, caption says all characters are unlocked in All-Star this time. :P
Edit 2: no, it literally says the opposite, lol

In these battles, multiple opponents appear in one stage, and you clear the battle by defeating a number of them. The rest area that appears between battles displays the next opponents and the year the characters made their first appearances, and it also holds recovery items and an occasional reward. The characters you fight against appear pretty much in chronological order. Behold, the history of Nintendo games!!

Yeah, with the promo video and posters after Shulk's reveal, I'm guessing the 11 "unrevealed" characters aren't going to be shown pre release and will be unlockable with Lucina

Edit: well shit

This pretty much the best news possible for those (like myself) hoping for even more characters. It pretty much confirms we don't know the whole roster!

:D

G&W was on the leak, so it might confirmed all the characters were unlocked :(
Wait what? G&W should appear between Mario and Pacman, and he's not there. I think it's just a development build since he's obviously going to want to show off the All-Stars feature but also doesn't want to spoil the game. Notice the lock symbol? (:

Lock was in the leaked screens and now is confirmed to mean not everyone was unlocked at least for part of the video recording. This does not mean that there are more characters we don't know about 100%, but it does mean there is a chance that's the case.

Now you've done it, Sakurai.

Hahahahaha! Sakurai, you beautiful bastard you >:D

Aaaaaaaaaaand we're back on the train! Mewtwo please come back, we've all missed you...

Holy shit this update just destroys a lot of speculation...

- People that were disconfirming Ridley/Ice Climbers because of the All-Star shot in the japanese commercial.
- Using All-Star to say that the roster was indeed complete.

Let the floodgates open.

Also no music?

....uh oh.

A feature is really like to see implemented in the WiiU version is stock specific character matches... Like each stock is a new character, pick 5 before the match. Like the budokai tenchaichi games! Plus, I think I read somewhere that Project M was planning on doing this...

EDIT: oh shit at POTD... Maybe I'll be lucky enough to still unlock some surprises on my own with my launch copy!
