Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS: All-Star Mode Implies More Characters Beyond the Leak

I just can't get over the fact Sakurai is able to rebuild hype after such a throughout leak.

This man is legendary. No better wait for a game's release than with this master at the helm.

Oh wow! It's identical! O:

This is interesting since Little Mac is the opponent before Peach & Bowser. Given that Super Mario Bros. is a 1985 game, Sakurai seems to be treating Little Mac's first appearance as the Arcade game Punch-Out!! which released in 1984 rather than the NES game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! which released in 1987, which would have meant that he'd be before Mega Man.

Looking at the screen my first thought was Falco is 1993. Then I read the description. Appreciate having all star open without all fighters, hopefully events do the same.

My speculation is it shows 5 fighters, does that mean it is a series of 5 1-on-1 (like some events were) or a 2 vs. 1 and then a 3 vs. 1.

Wait, if All-Stars mode is unlocked from the beginning, doesn't that mean All-Stars get harder the more characters you unlock?
One way around this is to change it from 3 recovery items at the start to one for every 10 fighters slain.

Game and Watch and Duck Hunt are missing from this image. Game and Watch should be the first, dating back to 1980. Duck Hunt came out in 1984.
So yes, this seems to have been taken before those characters were unlocked.
That's just the menu image for the mode. I'm pretty sure the reason the character chosen on it is because they're all default.

The main thing to focus on is how this relates to the leak, and the fact that their screen showed the same image, after unlocking all the currently known characters. (If it was taken from the same save.) Plus the fact that the leak's roster screen has a very messy look to it at the bottom.

The leak was from multiple save files, it could easily have one where before the whole roster was unlocked in regards to All Star Mode, and other where it the CCS is complete.
Yeah, but it could not of too.

The point is that there's a possibility. Nothing is set in stone, but I personally think that this is another sign that those empty spaces at the bottom of the select screen are not just an ugly waste of space.

I mean I would love to be wrong, but that's the point.

I don't see how this new screenshot changes anything.

We have 100% confirmation that there are multiple save files on display in the ESRB video. It's likely that the locked All-star screen depicts the game before all characters are unlocked, and the roster screen depicts the game after all characters are unlocked. There's absolutely no reason to expect otherwise, unless you want to get your hopes up for additional characters that very well might not exist.

Fair warning!

Theory? More like wishful thinking.
I think the sloppy state of the select screen makes it more than wishful thinking. When have you known Sakurai, someone who places a great deal of importance on menu layouts, to have such a bizarre looking chunk of barren space in one of his games?

His wife designs them for goodness sake, I imagine they take more pride in it than to leave it that way in it's "completed" form.

The leaker said there was still locked characters apparently.

My uncle told me there are still 30 characters to be unlocked and 15 are DLC. Also Lucas is forever cut.

My point being unless said leaker gives video evidence to prove otherwise you have to assume anything they say is a falsehood.

They only had real video evidence of two of the characters, so we don't know anything yet if you're going by that logic (it's logic I follow as well, but still).

Well, the Wireframe fighter from the arcade game is considered to be Little Mac in this game, so that's not news.

The fact that the character select screen does not fit the usual Sakurai OCD is a more telling that there are characters left to unlock than this to me =P

Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr Mario and Maybe Bowser JR and Game & Watch (maaaaybe even Ness since now he is the only representative of his NES franchise) are in very bizarre places considering how every full unlocked roster was on past games

Not expecting any more characters other than those shown in the leak - if there are indeed more then it will be a pleasant surprise.

Lucina, Dark Pit and Dr Mario aren't really that odd when you remember that the clones were separate from the rest of the cast in Melee, even if closer to their own series than in this new screen. The real oddities there are Yoshi mixed up with the Mario cast in spite of being otherwise classified as his own series in Smash, and Game & Watch's position.

Are you sure? Melee looked like this:

Leave it to Sakurai to still stir up controversy about what is or isn't in the game after an incredibly extensive leak.

I adhere to the notion that there are no more characters on launch date beyond what we saw in the leak, but I am willing to acknowledge that both sides have good points.

For more characters:
+All-Star lock of course in the ESRB footage that showed all the characters.
+What's the point of having 9 characters per row, then going to 8, then 4 on the last row? Why is Shulk in the third party row? It seems like a strange design decision if nothing is missing.
+Leaving it at 49 characters seems a bit strange considering you could just throw in one more clone to make it an even and marketable 50.

Against more characters:
-Why would Nintendo show the ESRB an incomplete character roster? Though, why weren't the Miis in there? Perhaps there is some strange method of selecting a Mii.
-The possibility of multiple save files being used for the ESRB footage (though why not use the master file with everything unlocked?)
-There has been zero evidence of more characters and the leakers have inconsistent stories.

Unless the street date gets broken fairly early, there will be no way to know for sure. I'm ready to accept 49 characters, but I can't lie and say I wouldn't want more. I think DLC is a given anyways though.
