Just a heads up, you might want to leave NeoGAF soon just in case. The game could leak at any point, and when it does it'll definitely get a thread.

"RUMOR?: Ice Climbers, Snake, and Pink Gold Peach in leaked Japanese Smash?"

So what happens when Pink Gold Peach gets the Metal Box, or gets one-hundred gold coins in the Golden Plains stage?

Aaaand fixed:

Okay, nobody try and register. I will get back to you closer to the date.

Thanks Beezle!

Yeah, I strongly suggest lowering the stock count by 1-2, otherwise it'll be 'SSSDB', the super smash sudden death bash.

Also, since playing w/ friends lets you set All rules like a normal local match, I wonder if additional rules will be unlocked from the get-go this time, or if additional rules are just unlocked for online. They were previously one of the last things you unlocked.

I was thinking the same thing, but with items and especially smash balls turned on, the matches will probably be a little quicker. Will probably also help that most of us aren't as skilled or as patient as Hungrybox or Zero. I don't think it would be a big issue.

But Sah, maybe consider upping the standard time limit from 5 minutes to 6 at least? Or going down one stock for all the matches.

Also in this ruleset, how is a winner determined in a timeout? Just by playing out the sudden death?

Yeah but even some of those 4 player FFA's went to sudden death with items on medium.

Worse players will also be slower at the game and the game mechanics are actively geared towards making players live a little longer.

Lower the stock count to 3 & 4 and make the time limit 6 & 8.

SUDDEN DEATH FOR EVERYONEEEE

I'll probably lower the stock count, I remember how much longer characters live in this game, lol. Don't worry, i'll lower it. :)

why not just remove a time limit unless that's not possible?
Generally to prevent matches from taking an excessively long time, and to force someone to act in situations where the best option from both sides is not to approach.

Since it's an online tournament, with less of a strict schedule, maybe we should just increase the time limit. Give it 8-10 minutes or something.

Ah, cool. Sounds good!

With items on, if you're at a percentage defecit and you're using a more agile character, you can just stall until a health restoring item appears, without worrying about running the clock down.

Timer should be a thing (and Sudden Death shouldn't have a place in tournaments honestly other than if both players end on the exact same percentage but even then you only use that to decide who gets stage pick in a 1-stock, 3 minute decider).

ah thanks, was legitimately curious about that

I know. It's missing lucina's mask tho :p

Freaking auto correct!

I don't even know anymore

Really sorry guys, I'm new at this tournament business:

Updated it for:

Six minute, three stocks - regular matches
Eight minutes, four stocks - Semi/Grand finals.

amigood?

I'd say if anything, finalize the time and stock count based on footage from Japanese streams. See how long they last on average, and make your pick from there. Also, don't be afraid to throw a curveball. We're entering a new era of Smash, ripe for experimentation!

I'm trying to avoid JP streams. I want to save the hype for when I get the game.

My reason behind asking y'all to stick to a fighter is because I want to see your progression as you guys progress. It's more fun than constantly switching.

"Make your bed and you lie on it!"

You also haven't mentioned customisations or clarified what happens with the winner of sudden death.

If customisations were in, they'd be listed, right? ;)

Meaning they're not in.

Also, if a match goes to sudden death, and someone wins, they just progress like normal. Why the heck not?

Oh, items are now on medium. ;)

My two cents: Finalize these things closer to the actual date of the tournament. I think it was only the timing that was really needed so you and Bat could coordinate both, so all the other stuff isn't really important til we get closer to the actual thing. We could either have a vote, or you could set them yourself after knowing a bit more about the game from the streams or during the first week of release. If not you'll keep changing things and then have to backtrack constantly from here til the actual release :P

Also, don't worry about being new at this! Every other tournament host has been at some point :P

Ah, so no custom movesets at least? Oh well. :/

Well in any case, by the time October 3rd rolls around I'm sure we'll have a general idea of good settings for time and stock.

Oh so like "growing with your character"? Sounds neat I suppose.

Yeah, may make more sense. These are mostly tentative anyways, and are always subject to change. I'll finalise the final details after we see some online footage and we're about four days away from release.

I just don't want people whinging that they don't have enough unlocked moves and whatnot.

Vanilla sets we can guarantee everyone others, not customisable as they need to be unlocked.

Don't worry about it. It's all about working out the little details. And like someone said, the beginning is a good time for experimentation.

Looks good to me.

Hopefully my pestering isn't too annoying, but, on a different kind of note, how flexible is the schedule for matches? I'll have to work most days, is it reasonable to expect to have about a 24 hour period for player schedules to match up?

Hey ya'll. Regarding all that landing lag stuff that has been going around today, D1 just made a pretty lengthy post about it.

D1's Facebook said:
There have been rumors floating about that I confirmed a way for people cancel the landing lag of short hopped aerials in Smash 4. What I want to make clear is during E3, I immediately short hopped a fair and as I landed Marth lagged for days. During Pax Prime, I short hopped a fair with Marth and he didn't lag upon landing this time. I can't execute sh double fair, but I can at least do special moves/double jump before landing. I wouldn't say Marth's sh fair auto cancels, even you won't lag on landing. When a move auto cancels it ends right as you land with no landing lag. Marth's fair ends before the short hop, not fast enough to do a second fair, but note is the landing lag is gone.

In Smash 4, similar to the previous iteration of Smash, some moves (NOT ALL) auto cancel upon landing. In the case that a move ends before landing (THIS MEANS YOU ARE STILL AIRBORNE), you are given the opportunity to have two options:

1) land with virtually no lag giving you the freedom to quickly employ an offensive or defensive maneuver on the ground (just like Marth with the sh fair.)

2) do another mid air action before landing (double jump, airdodge, special move, normal attack.)

Let's move on shall we? I heard there was confusion over another technique found by M2K during Pax Prime weekend. The technique I was trying to explain over twitter shall be named zair canceled airdodges (ZCA for short?).

If you were to airdodge towards the ground in Smash 4, you'd lag upon landing giving your opponent a free opportunity to punish. What makes zair canceled airdodges so strong is that one can airdodge towards the ground to evade an an attack, and then execute the zair upon landing to cancel the landing lag of the airdodge.

If done correctly, you won't see the zair come out. You'll notice the person with a zair (tether) airdodge and then quickly land with the same landing lag one would have if they were to empty jump.

The only characters confirmed to be able to do this are ZSS, Samus, TL, and Link. With this technique it will be difficult to punish them for airdodging upon landing as they will be able to shield, roll, spot dodge, attack, and jump for free.

I hope this cleared the air, and please share this with anyone that has a misconception about my tweets in regards to Smash 4.

Feel free to follow me @xD1x on twitter for updates as they come by.

Thanks, and it's fine, more help the better!

I'll allow you guys to finish your matches as you please, a maximum of 24 hours wait though, otherwise other's may get restless when they want to play.

The whole timezone matchup comes into play here to streamline it a little more.

Hold on, I forgot Shadow Mario, who is his own playable character in Mario Gold: Toadstool Tour along with Bowser Jr. so I guess he's his own entity. That brings us to an even twelve, just like the original Smash Bros.

I like that you're not constraining the available chars to the starting lineup, anyways you're doing fine

Off-topic: I've been playing Xenoblade recently, and I think OT 15 should be called "My rifle is getting hotter".

I'll grab my coat.

Man, I love seeing how many people have started playing Xenoblade because of Shulk's inclusion. Even after the leak I get pretty hyped over seeing Shulk on the Smash Bros webstie.

I don't know where exactly this is supposed to stand between autocancel and... whatever. But it sounds excellent it means that in some manner this updated build has less lag (for Marth's forward aerial). If nothing else, I like playing Marth and he may have gotten that tiny bit better. At best, the entire game might be given a slight boost in fluidity.

Do you think we will get a new character reveal brfore Smash 3DS comes out in Japan?

I want to see Duck Hunt Dog get revealed!
All I know is it'll be anticlimactic if we see Duck Hunt's reveal trailer in the game first. We know every newcomer gets a trailer, and all of the trailers will be in the game. If the first time we see Duck Hunt's trailer is through offscreen phone footage on YouTube, I'm not sure it'll be as amazing as it would've been if Sakurai gave it a proper HD reveal on the Internet.

So yeah, Sakurai, show us Bowser Jr. and Duck Hunt, kthxbie

I wouldn't expect all newcomers to have trailers at all, honestly. If there's no trailer for DHD by the time the game is released, I'm pretty sure he won't have one at all.

I actually started playing the game in, like, March or something? I stopped playing at Alcamoth (which I got to maybe 2 months ago) because real life happened and I haven't had the motivation to pick it up again... until Shulk was revealed. I'm really happy he's in!
