Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I've always wanted to watch that show, but I haven't gotten to it. Perhaps now is the time.
Which show is it?
It's not so much what they're putting in the mod that bothers me, it's how they handle it and how the community treats it. It's as if they think they're making an actual entry in the Smash series rather than modifying a game to be more like another game. People have been modding Brawl for ages, but those mods have all been treated as mods. Project M is starting to get into entitled territory. People put it on a pedestal and treat it as if it's one of the games in the series when it's not even a game period.

In short, what bothers me is how Project M has been handled and treated. It's not a game. It's a mod of a game. That said, I actually like a lot of what's put into it.

I would've been okay with that back when Project M was a humble venture, but not anymore. They've changed it way too much and it no longer feels right. I'd want to play as those characters in a game that actually still feels like it was made by Sakurai.

Just look at it like you would Garry's Mod. Let the people who think it as its own thing enjoy it, and hey, more than 90% of the Smash community in overall will know what the main entries are.

I don't even know why I dislike clones so much. I don't mind shotos in SF at all, or Armor King, Christie, Anna, etc in tekken.

But I would still trade every clone in the game for a fourth of that number in unique characters.

This isn't exactly new. People have been treating mods as new games since the early days when they were released on disc, if they are extensive enough which, honestly compared to other Brawl mods, is very extensive. (Brawl Minus Maximum the exception) Some folks just do that.

Don't take it personal. It's not like a bunch of modders will ever upstage the amount of the work from creating the game scratch.

How many people here play (mostly) Project M vs. Brawl? I'd never even heard of PM until I joined smashgaf, but it seems like it's the standard around here.

me and my friends mainly play brawl and dabble in project m if we want to get angry at one another lol (but seriously i think for me and my friend project m while a good mod has some weird additions that we personally arent really fans of lol some of the costumes are pretty neat though i really like the ocarina alts and toon link alt and melee fox and falco is basically a running injoke within my group of friends lol

None of my friends are the type who would notice the difference with Project M (and I have a PAL Wii), so while I still play vanilla Brawl more often when I'm by myself I default to Project M. Sort of sucks I can never play it with anyone else though.

I've never even installed Project M. Melee was my least favorite of the series, so I don't really have an interest in the game playing more like it.

Even though I'm a ridiculously casual player, I overwhelmingly play PM. Aside from Olimar, the majority of the roster is just so much more fun to use. The ported stages and new costumes are just a bonus.

I feel like you're projecting and overblowing it out of proportion. People enjoy it since they prefer Melee's mechanics with Brawl's characters, and they added a ton of neat extras/easter eggs, and the work they put into it exceeds any console level hack I've ever seen outside of retro gaming... but I don't see people putting it on a pedestal outside of enjoying it as a more tourney friendly game at the moment, and it's more "fresh" than Melee and even Brawl. Even outside of competition there's a lot of cool things such as heavier physics/faster gameplay, and stages like Hyrule Temple 64 brought back.

In fact I'm hoping Smash 4 is a great tourney game so most of the competitive side of the community can migrate to that because at the moment Project M is scratching that itch.

I know it's not new. It's just that the Smash series means a lot to me and most other games that get modded don't. Remember that I'm only stating my feelings. This isn't supposed to be a debate topic.

I'm sorry, but I can't not take it personal. There is a good reason that I feel this way and I can't just change it because somebody told me things I already know. I don't hate the PM devs, the mod has just come to a point where it bothers me.

I'm not. There are specific reasons as to why I feel the way I do about PM, but like I said, this is was never supposed to be a topic of debate. I was just stating my opinion.

Me and my brother are casual fans and still prefer Project M, there's just some really fun additions (Snake's tranq and CQC combo).

I'm just offering advice. No intention or agenda to change how you fell.

I won't lie though, if down the line there is a Smash 4 mod that brings Lucas back like Project M brought back Mewtwo and Roy that'll be my preferred version of the game.

The difference between Smash 4 and Brawl is that Nintendo themselves can add more or modify the game after release. It will be interesting to see what they may do.

Anyone here have a 3DS XL/LL capture card from katsukity? How long would it take to ship to you? And how's the software?

Kind of want to get it for Smash 3DS's JPN release.
I do. Delivered in about two weeks. The software works great, but you have to use Window Capture because Game Capture crashes while streaming.

I can't believe it took me all friggin' day just to catch up with you people.

Anyway, I'll post today's cleans tomorrow, assuming I don't take all day to catch up again (hint: I probably will). In the meantime:

You should really just step back and not let a mod get to you personally. I mean like on NeoGAF the OT for Project M isn't that popular....

If it's not for you, that's fine, I just think it's a really cool thing that the community embraces a mod like that. The mod really shows a bunch of love to the series (mostly for the competitive side admittedly).

Project M is fine, but people who delusionally claim they could make a better game based on them tweaking a 3 year labour of love are smoking some serious ganja.

I do think some aspects are better personally, but that's up to opinion obviously. I'm not really a fan of bringing L canceling back for example. If they could combine Brawl+ with Project M that'd be my ideal mod.

Is Window Capture just the software in windowed mode?

Thanks. I think I'm ordering it.

If you take Project M changing the game personally, I'd hate to see what happens when you see the nude Samus mods.

It's not gonna happen, but many 'games' got their start as humble mods. It's usually a PC thing but I see no problem with Project M doing the same. I'm a fan of faster paced smash yet I want to play with the Brawl roster, therefore it's great for me.

A mod of a game is still a game is it not? It has rules, boundaries and is played.

I do like PM but I have to say a mod of a game is not a game in and of itself. It's a mod of a game.

It can be a great mod, like PM is, but saying it's a new game kind of isn't true. It's kind of like a different version. Aspects of the game may change but at its core it's still the original game (code wise and stuff).

I guess to me it's like if a game is patched or gets DLC. It's not a new game, just a changes version of the same game.

What about Team Fortress Classic? We've had many mods of many games that completely change what the game was ever about, and I don't think anyone takes those modders to task.

Basically, Project M is made by people who want Brawl to play like a more appealing game (in their opinions).

It's a setting in Open Broadcaster Software. Uses screen capture instead of direct feed from console. There's quite a few settings I had to play with to get my stream looking good.
