Can't speak for them, but I suspect it's either pride or a desire to stay relevant by adding content that's unlikely to be implemented by Nintendo anytime soon. Either way, they're treading dangerous waters now.
But I'm curious if they're still planning the light suit alt, since Nintendo's got a recolor in Smash now...
Nah, at least not for the 3DS version. Both the Japanese and US release dates have been advertised far too heavily at far too many events and via too many channels for a delay this late in the game. I'm very confident in that. Who knows about the Wii U version, though... anything could happen with that, especially because we still don't have a release date and we're getting pretty close to the point where one would need to be announced almost immediately for Nintendo's marketing teams to have enough time to hype it up sufficiently. There are so many reasons Nintendo can't and shouldn't delay the Wii U version beyond the holidays, but this is starting to become reminiscent of the Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster release date situation last year...
Yeah, I expect the PotD to continue on until a short while after the Wii U is released. The more I think about it, there is still so much we don't know about the home console version of Smash!
I mean... I kinda dig it, but in my opinion the PM team is just going too far with this. I think they should have made the game play like Melee, changed a few things, added a few things and left it at that. The way this mod is being handled and treated bothers me.
I completely agree. As cool as the alt costumes continue to be, it's becoming increasingly and troublingly clear (at least to me) that the Project M guys see themselves as setting the new baseline for and "saving" Smash from Sakurai after Brawl (not to mention Smash 4, which has already been smugly written off by a ton of Melee/Project M players if the Internet and trade shows are to be believed). I do applaud the Project M team's efforts to a degree, but they're way past the point where they started going too far IMO -- adding completely new characters (which they're apparently doing?) is really going to be overdoing it.
How many people here play (mostly) Project M vs. Brawl? I'd never even heard of PM until I joined smashgaf, but it seems like it's the standard around here.
It's not the standard for me; my friends and I were curious about it and have since played Project M quite a bit, and none of us found any reason to keep playing it over regular Brawl. While it's got some really cool features (those alt costumes and no tripping) and the increase in speed/gravity can sometimes feel exhilarating, too many characters and pretty much all the stages are completely and utterly ruined (for us). Honestly, even without the character issues, the stages being mangled so badly (poor Green Hill Zone, good god) is reason enough for us to never look back. Yes, I know you can replace the PM stages with their original Brawl versions, but why even go to the trouble when we already enjoy pretty much everything about regular Brawl over PM to begin with?
Honestly, for my buddies and I, regular Brawl without tripping would pretty much be Smash nirvana for us... but even dealing with tripping is preferable to dealing with everything PM messed with. That said, Smash 4 will quite handily solve all these issues very soon.
Also I like that Sakurai actually explained the costumes (though Samus' are quite easy to work out) because you feel the colours are a reference to something rather than being random. Would be cool if he did it for others.
"Pic of the day. Until now, you were only able to choose from four, or sometimes five or six colors for each character. This time, though, all characters have eight colors to choose from! The first four color schemes for Samus are based off her Varia Suit, Fusion Suit, Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, and the Dark Suit."
" And here she is in the color schemes of the Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus (a regular in the Smash series), the Light Suit, and Dark Samus. A total of eight colors."
I was reading the list from left to right and was like "these aren't matching up with the picture" but I forgot things are read from right to left in Japan which made alot more sense.
I don't think they'll announce the Wii U release date until after the 3DS version has been out for a few weeks. They don't want anyone to think "Eh, I can wait a little while longer." They want uncertainty.
Holy moly, 8 alts! Sakurai had a field day with Dark Pit, I bet!

Agreed. I think I mentioned this before but they will only reveal Smash Wii U date a week or 2 after the 3DS version releases worldwide. If it was delayed next year, they would've mentioned it much earlier (like Xenoblade X and Captain Toad in Europe).
I don't think they'd do this. I honestly think Lucas will be DLC if he is cut-since the first we heard of Lucas being cut was in the same Gematsu leak that mentioned DLC. Probably the first DLC too, maybe free DLC to try to encourage people that DLC wouldn't be a rip off.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can too, but honestly, we can't be assed to look into it and actually do it. We've come this far putting up with and still play the hell out of Brawl despite tripping, and with Smash 4 right on the cusp of release, there's less reason than ever to bother!

You could always just look for the "No tripping" code for Brawl, create a new RSBE01.gct containing only that code (and unrestricted pause camera maybe) and boot Brawl with GeckOS. Tada - party like it's 2008 (that's pretty much how my RSBE01.gct looked back in 2008 before we had Brawl+ and ProjecM lol), Brawl without tripping and no other changes
EDIT: Sounds like you use the hackless ProjectM? In that case you would have to look up the smashstack exploit. Just need to convert GeckOS boot.dol to an boot.elf using this tool and place it on the root of your SD-Card instead of the boot.elf of hackmii. Place the RSBE01.gct in a folder called "codes" on the root of your SD and the process will be exactly the same is hackless ProjectM since that uses the smashstack explit as well
I did say Samus' were pretty easy, but some can be rather obscure i.e. Captain Falcon's dark outfit being based off of a Japanese advert.
It also means colours like Samus' green outfit are confirmed to just be a colour and not a reference so people are left scratching their heads hunting for a possible connection.
By the way, have we heard anything about file size for this game? I don't want to import a 3DS and a code to download Smash Bros only to learn my SD Card won't hold the game!
That would be as weird as the Koopalings alt for Bowser Jr. I wonder if the announcer will change how he calls the names, as well as if the alt characters will have different voice dubs.

If Dark Pit, Dr. Mario and Lucina began as alts, they'd likely have had similar alterations, so I could see the Koopalings, Alph and any other hypothetical character-changing alts doing the same.

Green Samus could be from Other M, she had that color during younger days I think. But Pink Samus is 100% from Metroid, come on! The light blue visor makes it clear.
One of the koopalings rumored to be bowser jr's alts is named roy. No rumor or leak seems to indicate Fire Emblem's Roy is returning
The winky face means he knew people wouldn't think of the koopas first.
That would be awful. Lucas I could just about understand, but Wolf's normals are drastically different from Fox's, and the reason why he's the only space animal I actually find enjoyable to use. Making him an alt would be an insult and a betrayal.

I'm still not completely sold on all the koopalings being in the game. Seems like too much work for a single character. Announcer, voices, a winner/loser screen for each character, etc.
