Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

I fast-traveled back to Colony 9 because I had reached carrying capacity for crystals. I discarded a few low-level crystals, but wanted to start converting the bulk of them into gems. I quickly and thoughtlessly cranked out multiple gems using my Rank III crystals and cylinders, just to make space. I then slotted the resulting gems into available slots on my party's armor and weapons wherever it produced a stat boost and/or passive bonus that seemed nice (I.E. ether increase on Sharla, etc).

You should start the Colony 6 reconstruction now to get a portable gem forge, it's really useful.

Question about equipping gems: If I slot a gem into a weapon or an article of clothing and then later equip a different weapon or article of clothing, the gem in the slot is automatically removed and returned to my inventory, correct? I don't have to manually remove each gem, do I?

That isn't automated but you can remove those and put them in another piece of equipment by selecting gems with a dark E while navigating the menu.

Think whatever you want, but I said it simply because it's how I feel and an honest opinion I have regarding my personal gameplay preferences for the new Smash. No ulterior motives. Novel concept, I know!
I also agree about the dash dancing -- I don't like seeing characters looking like they're glitching out dashing back and forth. It's a similar thing to seeing people wavedashing back and forth in melee while someone respawns. It's irritating to even watch people use, and I personally prefer a slower pace.

No dash dancing and Marth and Meta Knight being heavily nerfed are the best two pieces of news to come out of these demo impressions. My hype remains at max. <3

Yup, I welcome these changes. Those complaining about being persecuted for maining the two most OP chars for the last 5 years can chill. OMG I have to adapt to new balancing!!! Oh noesss

My thoughts on Ice Climbers being cut:

You're not good people.

Just to put it here also. A post from Zipzo from Smashboards about his overall impression of the game:

Landing Lag

The elephant in the room. I will be blunt. Some moves have been given more landing lag. Sonic's bair. Falcon's knee. Air dodging.

However...

Many (I'd actually say the strong majority of) moves in the game have basically little to no landing lag. It was very easy to identify them quickly simply through playing. I believe that this whole landing lag thing is suffering from a near-sighted syndrome effect. People are playing the characters they like in the way they always have, and when they come across a move they are used to using a lot and it seems to have a bit of landing lag, they suddenly attribute that to the entire game. Now all of the sudeen every single aerial has more landing lag?

The fact of the matter is that landing lag isn't so serious as has been blown up to be.. It does make characters affected feel [/i]different[/i] to play, because you need to change how you move and what abilities you use. You have to adapt, but it certainly does not make the game slower.

Overall, I can say with confidence that the game is not suffering from some kind of overall landing lag issue.

Combos

Tilts.

Tilts, tilts, tilts.

Tilts are going to be huge. Most experienced players know how important good tilts are for combos and that seems to be the case here. In any case, combos tend to become way more difficult when your opponent is at higher %s, but at low %s combos are definitely a thing. Something about the way the characters connect in this game has been seriously changed from past iterations.

Advanced Techs

Brawl dash dancing. No wavedashing. No l-cancelling but there is teching (or maybe it was auto-cancel? Hard to say...) Pivot cancel is still in. You are able to do tilts as well in the same way. It's pretty neat. I wouldn't say it's like the definition of a meta, but it's a neat trick for mix-ups.

Ledge Mechanics

Okay, lets get this explained.

The ledge snap has been nerfed significantly. It's way more similar to Melee than Brawl. I don't know frame data for Melee so I wont' say it's the same, but tbh I think it may just be a tad more forgiving than Melee, but it is definitely nerfed.

There is a small "ledge immunity" after letting go of a ledge. The ledge immunity is to you. I tested this extensively with Ike, Megaman, and Charizard.

Basically if you drop off the ledge (in a manner that you would do if you were trying to maybe stall there), the ledge actually becomes un-grabbable (is that a word? lol) for a very small window of time.

For example if you are Charizard and you drop off the ledge or get trumped, and you hop very quickly back to the ledge, you will not grab it. You will just fall right past it.

Characters with flips for their 2nd jumps or anything resembling a buoyant animation (like Kirby) are less affected by this and I'll tell you why. It seems that the game waits for some of the ending frames of the characters flip animation before enacting the grab mechanic. I tried with Marth and Shulk who both have flips, and they basically just bumper car'd the ledge until their flip animation was done, then they would grab it. Characters like Charizard, Megaman, and Ike would just not grab it at all and fall. The details around these mechanics needs to explored a lot more, but overall, I think the off-stage game has been given a whole new make-over.

Game Speed

The speed of the game is...omg this must be so surprising to hear, but it's inbetween Brawl and Melee. However...air speed is still closer to Brawl. Ground speed is very Melee feely though.

Fast falling is incredibly fast though.

Shields are fast. Very fast. They are basically the new wave-dash (I dare say), I'm being totally serious, and you can attack out of them with a great deal of attacks.

Overall

This game did not feel like Brawl, and I've been playing a lot of Brawl lately to prepare and I almost feel bad for doing so. It actually felt more like Project M, to be honest if I had to compare it to something, but when it comes down to it I almost feel like I'm insulting the word put in to this game to simply size it up to some previous iteration.

This game has soo much freakin' stuff in it. I now understand what Sakurai was saying when he said they basically rebuilt all the characters. Even though many characters possess the same movesets, you can really tell they aren't the same. The animations have been rebuilt from scratch. Peach has mostly the same moveset, but her body moves so intricately and 100% differently in the way that she executes them. It is absolute madness to witness.

I really do believe the characters were built from the ground up. Same move-sets withstanding. Characters interact with one another in a way we've yet to see, the hit-stun in Smash 4 is unique, and the characters have had literally everything touched up.

Blah, blah, excited to play the game, blah, blah. Let's get this AMA going.

Xenoblade Chronicles update:

Thoroughly explored the rainforest leading up to Frontier Village. So... much... stuff. And now I'm inside the village and my jaw is on the floor. This place seems huge, and extraordinarily colorful. :-D

I quickly and thoughtlessly cranked out multiple gems using my Rank III crystals and cylinders, just to make space. Another question: I know some quests expire at certain points, but is there a post-game where I can continue finishing the remaining quests, leveling up to challenge super-bosses, etc?

Game is so amazing. It's mind-boggling how the game feels so grand in scale, yet very intimate at the same time.

Gems are automatically returned to the inventory when you replace the gems equipped. Selling equipment with attached gems also detach the gems back to your inventory as long as it is detachable.

As for quests that expired, no you can't backtrack on them.
post-game as in new game + resets your finished quests so you can do all the quests with different results.

Wow, so the game apparently more or less sounds like 64. I like.

But the animation doesn't really matter that much, the applications of the move do on the other hand.

Fox and Falco have their reflector as a large part of their play style, yet their combos and general play style are completely different. That's enough for me.

So now the problem is that the Falco players can't adapt to this new move, even if it's altered?

Yeah, I actually have it up right now--it's a fantastic game. I'm just a little past where you are.

Rank III crystals are when stat boosts really start getting good. At that point I had Shulk and Reyn at max affinity, so I was able to create some HP Up IV gems at Mega Heat (which gives 2 copies of a maxed gem). Equipping both of the gems gives you 48% extra HP. I did the same with Strength, Agility and even Double Attack.

I wonder when I'll start getting Rank IV crystals, so I'll have to do this all over again.

Oh my god, those impressions sound incredible.

Huge spoiler about quests becoming unavailable:
Those cities may no longer be available at all. Or the characters.

On one hand, peach's second jump still sucks supposedly(Damn you smash direct for getting my hopes up!)

On the other, her new up air is apparently a killer and she has a full black alt....

Still surprised the roster is 100% leaked yet. End of Saturday maybe?

And unrelated but I just died in FTL against the Rebel Flagship's 3rd form on hardmode due to bad luck. I'm so angry arggh. Please Smash Bros leak for me and make me happy.

I'm just struggling to think what your reasons would be for hating something as simple as the fact that a character can move left and right to bait another player other than "competitive players like this, maybe if I complain about it someone will say something to me and I'll get another chance to get on my high horse again about how most competitive players are awful people".

Dash dancing, like wave dashing, interrupted the normal flow of gameplay and paved the way for a lot of broken shit which ruined Melee TO ME. This is all just my opinion. Why you're so concerned with what I specifically think about Smash is not something I'm sure I'll ever understand. My thoughts on this and the fact that we disagree shouldn't matter to you in the least. I had an opinion and I expressed it. The reason that's an issue is that my opinion happens to be unpopular among the competitive community. Opinions in favor of the competitive community usually go unchallenged, while the opposite also holds true.

Anyway, I'm not looking to turn this into a Melee vs. Brawl/Smash 4 debate, so this is the last I'm saying on the matter. I had an opinion and I expressed it, end of story. The way Smash 4's finer gameplay details are shaking out is certainly making me happy, but I mean it when I say I hope you're still able to find things to be excited and hyped about despite the fact that Melee's gameplay and its quirks mostly seem to not be returning for Smash 4. Honestly, I hope the game turns out to be fun for you regardless (but I'll certainly understand if it doesn't).

On a brighter, more positive note, I'm super hyped about Fierce Deity Link and Galacta Knight, and damn Chrom's model looks great in Robin's victory animation! Suddenly it's very easy to see why and how Sal Romano's leaker got Chrom being playable wrong.

Just to put it here also. A post from Zipzo from Smashboards about his overall impression of the game:

Those are fantastic impressions. They're similar to the ones I've come away with after playing it at E3/SDCC/etc.: that Smash 4 isn't Melee and it isn't Brawl, but something new entirely... and I love it. Give me something new over a rehash of EITHER game, please!

I also agree about the dash dancing -- I don't like seeing characters looking like they're glitching out dashing back and forth. It's a similar thing to seeing people wavedashing back and forth in melee while someone respawns. It's irritating to even watch people use, and I personally prefer a slower pace.

EXACTLY THIS. I'm glad I'm not alone! You perfectly nailed one of the biggest reasons I don't like or miss dash dancing. It's not even about Melee vs. Brawl on a macro level, it's about dash dancing itself and how dumb/disruptive it looks and is. (Again, to me.) Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I'm right there with you! As I said to Joelnky above, though, I don't want to keep discussing this because I don't want things to get derailed when there's literally so much else we're all learning about right now that we can discuss and be excited about!

All these developments are making it hard to contain my anticipation.

Smash is almost here baby.

Also the guy who did the Smash thread said Sonic was his favorite character he tested so far and that's only making me more excited.

Nerfing Marth's throw game? I'm okay with that. No more double forward air? I can even live with that. Neutering his spacing game in general? whyyyyyyyy

Guess I'm droppin' him as a main.

Git gud n00b

But seriously, I'm in the camp that believes future Smash games should not be Melee 2.0. Melee is one of my favorite games ever, but there were aspects to it that are hard to translate to future titles. Melee mechanics pigeon hole the series into a very specific formula, and I would like to see the series experiment with different mechanics.

But I thought Brawl was amazing so what do I know?

Still surprised the roster is 100% leaked yet. End of Saturday maybe?

I would guess that's because the impressions are posted from a demo, not from the actual game.

I expect the upcoming week to have someone spill the beans, however, as there's always that one shop that breaks street date.

? But the whole roster was leaked ages ago :P

I think the main problem with perception about this game is that most people only know two Smash games well: Melee, and Brawl. One was a work of art, and the other left a lot to be desired. It is natural for fans to try and pin Smash 4 as more "like" one of the two. The game is obviously not Melee, so by default it becomes more "Brawl like" in people's minds, which enforces fear and disappointment. Yet thus is its own game, and Smash can be a wonderful and competitively strong game without being like Melee or Brawl.

That's
the joke ;)
You need to work on your delivery.

I'm not necessarily concerned with your opinions, it's just that every time I've seen you post it seems very condescending to competitive players or intentionally worded to get a reaction and it really gets on my nerves sometimes, this is the first post you've made that I've seen that I don't hate.

I definitely disagree with you on dash dancing by a long shot though, and calling it broken makes me feel like you're getting it confused with something else, because it doesn't lead to anything "broken" by its self. It's just a great tool for tech chasing, baiting get up attacks, tricking people into thinking you're going to dash etc.

It adds a lot to the game without being anything that's hard for a new player to understand, they might not fully comprehend the implications of it, but it isn't something they wouldn't be able to execute. I don't think the game "gains" anything from it's removal, I'm fine with them removing wavedashing, I'm fine with them removing L-cancelling as long as the effects are somewhat there but dash dancing was a useful and accessible technique.

Also if it looking weird is such a problem which I've seen mentioned, why isn't auto cancelling or grabbing a ledge backwards also a problem, those don't look natural either you know.

I never in my life met someone who complained about melee, because if you don't play at a competitive level you won't even see in your life the competitive moves... I just don't understand why can't the game be appealing to both.

Clarification on DDD's final smash

His final smash ends with him driving his hammer in to his opponent like it's the fist of god, it's so over done it's silly. I don't really remember to well the first bit of the animation, I only caught the end of it.

Seems like most of the complaints come from the fact that people have to relearn their character from a twelve year old game.

That's reassuring, seems like the actual changes in mechanics are much more accepted than after the E3 invitational.

Honestly, the only thing I ever cared about was getting Deku Link as a playable character.

B: Deku Bubble - Deku Link charges up a bubble and launches it forward.
Side B: Deku Spin - Deku Link spins through an enemy or enemies.
Up B: Deku Flower - On ground, pops into a Deku Flower and quickly gets launched out into the sky, with a kind of Peach-like fall. When used in the air, you get a smaller but still viable boost from a gust of air.
Down B: Deku Nut - Throws a stunning Deku Nut. When used in the air, it drops directly below him.
Final Smash: Deku Baba - A giant Deku Baba appears on stage and attacks the opponents.

Fuck the other Links!

Going to the demo event tomorrow in Chiba! If you want anything answered, let me know! (Nothing too technical)

I just want confirmation of Lucario and Charizard's final smashes. D:
Yes, I know they are probably mega evolutions.

also

It does not change Fox's name.

Essentially, his fur turns completely grey, and the color of his costume turns to a grey with purple linings. It looks a lot like...well...this
Wolf_O'Donnell(Clear).png

I repeat it does not simply turn his fur "dark". It's actually more of a light gray.

Yeah, people need to learn that 4 is its own game.

Since it doesn't change his name, Wolf still has a chance then!
