Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

I don't actually think Ridley will be playable in Smash 4, but I'm not a fan of the way Sakurai has handled the situation either. He made it clear when other characters weren't going to be in the game, but whether he intended to or not, he has been stringing Ridley fans along for ages now. Even if that 'other playable boss characters appear' wasn't him trolling, he must have noticed that it had just made Ridley supporters even more thirsty, and should have shut it down shortly afterwards.

I think, Sakurai knows exactly what he's doing to Ridley fans.

Even though K Rool's fanbase is pretty crazy, he's not as horribly unlikely as Geno. He's appeared in a game since the last Smash, he's appeared in multiple games (I wanna say about 10?), he's been a trophy in the past two smashes, and his troops appear in Smash Run. I wouldn't expect him to be a playable character, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't almost expect him to be a stage boss.

I'm not saying you're crazy for thinking he's a more likely character than Geno.

I'm saying you're crazy if you're one of the ones going around telling everyone that K. Rool is inevitable this time because DKC's been so mishandled in Smash Bros. and this is the last shot at redemption or the game as a whole will be an absolute unmitigated disaster.

So we pretty much have every main character from Mario in huge game right now

So what's the future for the Mario series in Smash?

I think maybe Kamek could make for a good character. Not only is it indirectly adding another Yoshi rep, but Kamek has been getting a lot of exposure these days, as Nintendo seems to be phasing out Magikoopa as a generic enemy and focusing more on Kamek as a unique character.

We'd have Bowser, Jr and Kamek. Basically the entire Koopa family, Grandpa (more or less), Father and Son.

He'd also be another magic user and we don't have a lot of them in Smash.

Paper Mario is the only answer.

Captain Toad!

I'd argue that Geno being a Mario character actually makes his chances smaller (though he was probably never even considered). Think about it, if Sakurai wants to add another mario character, he'd choose more recognizable, relevant ones that he doesnt' have to go through the hassle for negotiating for. Getting third party chars is a pain, so it's only worth it if the character is big and iconic enough to get tons of people excited. THat basically limits it to main characters of noteworthy third party franchises and pretty much nobody else

From a practical standpoint, you're right. My point was that doing crazy stuff like organizing petitions for a one-off character from a 1996 game is slightly less crazy when you consider that it's a 1996 Mario game. It's not like Geno's this totally obscure character people are going nuts over. They're still crazy for expecting him in, but they could be crazier. They could have been organizing petitions and making 441-page threads for Prince Sable.

Paper Mario is the only answer.

This is the right answer.

Captain Toad!

This is not.

Agreed. He's not likely by any means considering he's been absent in his own series for way too long. I just wish Dixie would show up in Smash.

At least it was a Mario game (and a very good one, at that,) and not some weird one-off or a minor franchise. Granted, that's not much of a defense, but the fact that Geno's a character from Nintendo's flagship franchise is worth something.

The final post in that thread is legendary. neva 4get.
The funny part is that now we have a 40-50 character roster, and he'd probably still have the same problems lol.

Yesss, one of my picks made it! Go Chibi Robo!

Does anyone remember the name of that Smash Bros Brawl site (not the Dojo) that kept updating with all the leaks and daily posts? It had a forum too, but the forum a few years after Brawl just turned into some general video game forum and died.
Brawl Central, I believe? Which became Nintendo Hub, which became VGDistrict, which became...I dunno, guessing it's not around anymore?

Tbh I don't even have a most-wanted character. I am very happy with the roster as it is.

I mean I love Rhythm Heaven more than anyone but I won't condemn Smash just because it doesn't cater to my wants and likes.

I think Captain Toad would be a good way to give Toad a playable role that isn't too ambiguous or generic. Even though it would be weird seeing him jump.

Chibi Robo will probably join Advance Wars, Custom Robo, Daigoso Band Brothers, and Golden Sun in the "popular unlockable assist trophies who will never have a playable rep" department.

The Geno phenomenon was truly something to behold. Overnight, an insignificant character from a forgotten game was suddenly the greatest character in the history of video games.

I'd love to see a case study on that.

I mean everyone has hopes for characters forgotten or misplaced in time, I'm a Takamaru advocate after all. :P

But for the most part I agree with this. It's just completely fascinating to me even now how a character with these circumstances came to dominate the large majority of the discussion for a game released 12 years after most people's first encounter with them. Even more so was the militarization of folks as "for" or "against" even when you had no feelings one way or another on him.

When you consider the context of the time, it's pretty clear that the audience in the Melee reveal was primarily just pumped to see Samus in a new render. The Metroid franchise in 2001 was nearly as dormant as the Mother franchise is in 2014.

The thought of a frothing Ridley fanbase even existing back then is pretty funny. Metroid fans just wanted anything.

I just realized that the next Smash Bros. will probably come out in 2021. It's crazy if you think about it.

Ugh, I feel weird enough knowing the Pacific Rim sequel is out in 2017.
Smash 6 hype shouldn't start until at least the new console iteration has been announced.
That being said, I call Inkling being in as a playable character.

K. Rool to me is the Godzilla to DK's King Kong. Which is why I feel he's the perfect villian for Donkey Kong. He just needs some tweaking and a bit of redesign by Retro, if you ask me. Lord Fredrick isn't a bad villain at all either, but I hate Tiki Tong with a passion.

Oh, so K. Rool and Donkey Kong fought exactly one time? What a great comparison!

Except Prince Sable isn't third party and thus actually has better chances than Geno (still super low, but better)

Saki/Isa/Katchi (Sin & Punishment series), Andy/Sami/Lin (Advance Wars), Elite Beat Agents (with Elite Beat Divas alts), Ray MKIII and Isaac are too good to be stuck in AT limbo. :(

It's scary to think that we're seeing another Metroid drought. I doubt the franchise is coming back any time soon.

Metroid and Mother were the only franchises in the first Smash that didn't have a game in the N64, right?

Chibi Robo! Yes! I would love it if they incorporated the recharge mechanic too, like he slams down the plug and recharges, becoming strong. But slowly after that, he starts becoming weaker.

Yeah, you can see about 3 minutes into the E3 Melee reveal that they cheered just as heavily for Samus (more than any other character) as they had when Ridley and Samus appeared onscreen together. Clearly, the hype was for Metroid, and not Ridley. Ridley fans are just projecting their own hopes whenever they use that dumb argument.

Metroid and Mother were the only franchises in the first Smash that didn't have a game in the N64, right?

Correct, but I'm pretty sure Mother 64 was in development, and I THINK I recall hearing that there was a Metroid prototype for the 64 as well.

Chibi-Robo could be a cool character but wasn't his most recent game only a Mini-game kind of thing. If Nintendo used his IP more I would welcome him.

Which is why, if Ridley isn't playable, I'd think Sakurai is a bit of an asshole.

I think it's pretty funny to be honest. I wouldn't call him an asshole, really. If he was saying shit like "Ridley is too big. He'll never to in Smash deal with it, I dont like him, blah blah blah." You would have a point. He isn't doing that, he's leaving subtle clues and being a tease, and I think it's pretty funny, tbh.

I'm sorry I keep posting this but god damn you guys

Yep. As someone who missed both Earthbound and Super Metroid during the SNES days, I grew up considering both Ness and Samus "those Smash characters."

Not when you put it that way, of course. Different strokes for different folks.

All that Geno talk made me realize how easy it would be to replace him in a new RPG. Not that we need one since we have Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, but just sayin'.

Replace this

and nothing of value was lost.

I need some context for this.

“Can you go into more detail on how Mewtwo changes forms, and would you like this new form to appear in the new Smash Bros.?”

Upon asking this question the audience burst into laughter. Both Tsunekazu Ishihara and Junichi Masuda also had a surprised look on their face and appeared to not know how to safely answer the question. Sakurai was also in the audience and looked as if he were thinking, “Oh man, not this again!” after the question was asked.

After a brief moment of silence, Ishihara and Masuda answered by saying they don’t have anything to announce about the new Pokémon (Mewtwo’s new form) today, and that they can’t speak on its appearance in other games. Sakurai then shouted out, from the audience, “We are thinking about it.”

Captain Syrup is the one true Smash hopeful, y'all, let's be serious.

Sakurai's more likely to include Geno than any real Wario Land representation

Again, you're right, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. The post I originally responded to implied that the Geno hype was so strange because of how obscure a character Geno is. My point was that, all things considered, Geno isn't that obscure, since he came from a Mario game which has always had a loyal (if small) fanbase.

Dunban is pretty good as a player character.

I'd go with Dunban/Reyn/Riki in some order, since your only other party member aside from Shulk at the moment is Sharla.
My Reyn is probably stronger, statistically speaking, but maybe I'll go with Dunban. I'll definitely switch to Dunban/Reyn/Riki next time I boot up the game, though. Thanks for the advice, everyone. :-)

If anything, keep Shulk in the party so the event can carry its weight for you.
Well, Shulk will still show up in the cutscenes regardless, right?

Not when you put it that way, of course. Different strokes for different folks.

Well it doesn't work at all - Godzilla and King Kong fought exactly once. Both had their own series beforehand, and both continued with their series afterwards.
King K. Rool was only created as an enemy of Donkey Kong, and hasn't been seen outside of the Donkey Kong series.
