Nvidia can go for disreputable cowardice with $450 for the 980 and $350 for the 970, or they could turn a ugly duckling into a swan with a $400 for the 980 and $300 for the 970 instead.

Add $50 to both of those prices.

Little better than the current Ti with another 980Ti probably not far behind.

I hate Nvidia's current release pattern

Yeah I guess I'll just get another 770 and SLI and a new monitor as well I guess.

I want to build another PC from scratch cause it's fun. But man I'm probably gonna go off and spend around 1500-1700 on it. Still waiting for "the big leap"

Maybe I'm missing something, but what happened to the GTX 880 benchmarks when compared to these?
GTX 880 doesn't exist.
If rumors are to be believed they're skipping the 8xx desktop series to maintain the desktop and laptop naming schemes aligned.

880 is 980, they changed the name.

Looks good to me, my 680 scores 6800 so it will be a nice boost.

The laptops got the 800 series just like they got a 300 series. Because there was technically an 800 series due to the laptops Nvidia has to go to the 900 series.

where does this put my GeForce 680?

The 2014 Razer Blade is a DAMN fine laptop. But in my experience playing on it, it needs just a little bit more GPU performance. The 870M -> 970M would do just that.

I think it would make the Razer Blade the undisputed best gaming laptop money can buy.

Wow at those mobile scores.

Laptop GPU scoring the same as R9 290 is impressive.
Hopefully it won't burn a hole in your table while doing that.

Also means that we should finally be able to see powerful small form factor PCs - 980M should be able to handle pretty much any modern game at 1080p easily.

I'm not a PC guy, but is it really true that the non availability die shrinks are the cause of this slow as molasses improvement in the GPU space?

As a person who's fascinated by tech advancements, this is concerning to me. Isn't it..you know, bad, when things hit a wall like this?

It's not bad in the sense that it will force engineers to think outside known conventions to see improvements. What's funny, is how Moore's law has been pretty damn accurate all this time until now.

This is still a good time to upgrade a 560Ti right? But to a 780Ti or a 980...

If you can get your hands on a cheap 780Ti that would be the better choice for price/performance-ratio. 780Ti also has better memory bandwidth.

Either way, whatever you pick the upgrade will be amazing for you.

Assuming someone is making a new PC then wouldn't the 980 priced at 450-500$ be the perfect card to get for high performance? Sure it wont be a major improvement for someone with a 780/780Ti but it sure sounds better than spending $700+ on a 780Ti.

My thoughts:

-lowest baseclock guess for 980 lines up with the 10 percent performance increase over 780ti that was suggested in other leaks
Big fucking yawn performance wise, it's stupid that they dare call this a '980' , gpu naming schemes remain meaningless.
Expect a "titan 2" big maxwell at some retarded price within 6 months from now.

-970 is surprisingly close to the 980, this is the one glimmer of hope I have right now.
If it is priced at 300 euros or lower we can finally after nearly 3 years see a moderate increase in price/performance.
You know... the kind of increase you normally get with every new generation of gpus, the old high end performance becoming the new midrange performance and price wise.

But, since these gpus are more power efficient than the amd ones, and since amd have no answer for these cards in the forseeable future, we all know how nvidia acts with a lack of competiton.
I cynically expect the 980 to be 550 or 600 euros and the 970 to be 400-450, and I will probably be right. (you can quote me on this when the prices are revealed)

-the laptop gpus are actually exciting, (for people who want to play games on a laptop *shudder*)
A large performance increase compared to the old ones thanks to the much lower power consumption.
Laptop gpus have going up massively in performance/watt since the gtx 460M days 4 years ago. Now you can actually stuff a worthy gpu in those overheating downclocking 'gaming' laptops:p

Though I shudder to think how much OEMs will charge for a laptop with a 980M

@Jasec, if you think that new nvidia graph is any more accurate than the old one then you're crazy
Pascal is going to be another 10-15 percent performance increase over big maxwell, not a 1.8x one.
At least initially (in 2017) until they sell you the proper die (in 2018, and for a thousand bucks)

If you're not vendor-loyal, R9 290 still is the best bang for high-end buck.

I miss when the 8800gtx came out and blew the Fuck out of everyone. Same with the Radeon 9800(9700?) pro.

We've had less than 10% performance jumps for like 3 years now. Oh well
