Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

Well, I was more thinking in terms of series - ones that have stages but neither a character nor an assist trophy - than I was thinking in terms of specific games, but sure

Getting into assist trophy is a whole nother bag of worms man. I'm sure TONS of people never played sin and punishment, not to mention some of the other japan exclusive games.

Heh, dojo was great. I remember being on vacation, and we'd take this laptop to some beach house down the street that had open wifi so we could see the dojo update.
I remember coming home from elementary school, yes I was that young, turning on my computer and being just so excited to see the update everyday. Then I would go onto forums and see others' wishlists and speculated character rosters and just being so hyped for Brawl. Dojo was just so good.

2 games. We had to deal with this for 2 games.
The normal response to this is "It's really hard to do, so competitive players deserve it if they can do it."

My preference is that it be IMPOSSIBLE to do instead of hard to do. :P

My smash games:

Mario: I've played every main series and quite a few spin offs.
Yoshi: Loved Yoshi's Island. Hated Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's new Island
Wario: Played through Wario Land as a kid and loved it. Recently played through Wario Land 2 and thought it alright. WarioWare wasn't bad either.
Donkey Kong. I played through DK94 DKC1-3 as a kid. Also DK64. Recently I played DKCR
Zelda: I think I've played literally ever Zelda game, except the CDi ones.
Pokemon: I've played Blue, Yellow, Gold, Ruby, Leaf Green, Diamond, Heart Gold, Black, X. I've also played a bit of Stadium and the Wii Stadium game (Revolution?)
Mother: I grew up on Mother 1 and Earthbound. I imported Mother 3 when it was released there.
Metroid: I have played many of these games. Particularly Metroid, Super Metriod, Fusion and Zero Mission. I have also dabbled in Prime but didn't care for it.
Kirby: My first Kirby was Kirby Adventure. I've also played Super Star, Dream Land, Kirby 64, Squeek Squad and Magical Mirror. Recently, I played Kirby Fighters
Star Fox: I've spent the most time with SF64. I've also played a bit of SF and Assault.
F Zero: I've played a little bit of the SNES F Zero and the N64 one. Not too much though.
Ice Climbers: I have played it through the copy I downloaded as a 3DS Ambassador. Haven't played it too much though.
Fire Emblem: I have played Fire Emblem 7 and 8. I own a copy of 3 for SFC.
Game and Watch: I owned Game and Watch Gallery on GB as a kid. Best game was octopus.
Kid Icarus: I've beaten the original and Uprising. Haven't played the GB Kid Icarus though
Pikmin: I've only played a little bit of 3, which my nephew got for buying MK8
ROB: My roommate actually owns a ROB! As a kid, I bought a copy of Gyromite at a gaming store. Couldn't really play it though since I didn't own a ROB.
Metal Gear: I've played every Metal Gear except 4, Uprising, and Ground Zeroes.
Sonic: I played 1 and 2 as a kid. I downloaded 3 on VC. I also own both episodes of 4 on my phone. Sonic Dash as well. I used to own Sonic Adventure on Gamecube but don't know where it is.
Animal Crossing: I played the hell out of the Wii version. So much so that I don't think I could ever play this series again.
Megaman: I've played every NES MM, a few SNES MMs.
Miis: I've used Miis before. I like Find Me quite a bit.
Pacman: Who hasn't played Pacman? everyone has.
Xenoblade: Played through most of it on my Wii, never beat it though.
Duckhunt: I played a lot of this, or at least tried to. The zapper never seemed to work right.

Haven't Played:
Wii Fit: Not really my cup of tea.
Punch Out: No real point in playing this these days. I have no interest in boxing, but if I were I'd probably play some modern boxing game.

Chain grabs and desynchs are way easier to do in Brawl than in Melee. They also have their own tier below MK and above everyone else in Brawl, and are also known to dominate characters just as hard as MK does.

Chain grabbing with Ice Climbers was way easier to do in Melee (for me, at least). I was apparently Wobbling before people knew it was a thing, but I was never good enough to make it an infinite.

Strongly disagree. Tells me you don't really know what kind of a game punch out is. It's a puzzle/rhythm game disguised as a boxing game.

The point of the game is to learn your opponents patterns and learn what inputs to enter to avoid their attacks and when the best time is to use your own.

It's a charming puzzle/boss fight game, that requires fast reflexes and some pattern recognition. It has loads of character and humor, and is very far from a 'traditional' boxing game.

Heh, dojo was great. I remember being on vacation, and we'd take this laptop to some beach house down the street that had open wifi so we could see the dojo update.
I know all too well checking the Dojo on vacation.

Actually, this year, coincidentally, I stayed in the same motel I did way back for the Dojo. I hadn't been there since then. They still had the original public computer in the corner area. Back in 2007 it was a nice computer, but in 2014 it certainly wasn't modern anymore. It actually brought back a flood of memories of the Dojo, because of how worried I was to find and use a PC to check it when I went on that trip.

That morning I just used my phone to quickly check the site for the pic of the day, how times had changed...

This conversation also reminded me that some of the earlier Dojo posts I actually viewed on Dial Up. We didn't get broadband until a little bit later.

I can't stand listening to prank call videos for some reason. Makes me cringe. Can I get a summary?

A guy calls the Nintendo Customer Service line, to ask a rep about Smash 4. Pretty much asking if Ridley was in the game. And also asking if the leak characters were in the game as well. :P

So where do we stand on the leaks?

It seems every hour that the roster is changing from "that was the full roster leaked" to "hold your britches, there's five hidden newcomers not even samurai knows about"

Some of us always were and still are on one side or the other (for the record, i'm still on 'there are probably more to unlock because the CSS looks weird team).

I think the flip floppers are just more vocal.

My position is that the leaked roster is the full on-cart roster and that we may or may not receive additional character DLC.

That's best way you could with. For me, I'm going with 51 leaked characters, along with NO DLC characters. So I wouldn't be disappointed if there is no DLC characters.

I was disappointed that few characters got cut but after hearing someone's impression with Japanese Demo really make me get over with cut characters and start to looking forward for the game.

Lucas
5th Place (Victory Music!)

Notable Appearences
Mother 3 (2006)

Bio
Lucas is the primary protagonist of Mother 3. Lucas is a timid and shy boy from Tazmily Village, living there for his entire life. He is close with his family, which include his father Flint, mother Hinawa, and twin brother Claus. He also loves his dog, Boney, and goes out playing and taking walks with him often. He is very gentle and cautious, almost the complete opposite of his brother. Through his adventures, he finds himself to be quite an adept user of PSI-Powers, which he uses to great affect in his battle against the Pigmask Army.

Congrats, Lucas! And, if you truly aren’t returning for Smash 4, thanks for the memories!

I just saw this. Thanks SmashGAF. If we're truly losing one of our boys, at least you guys sent him out right.

So if you hadn't found out about the leak roster, which of the characters revealed in it would have surprised you the most when their CHALLENGER APPROACHING screen appeared in-game?

For me I think it's actually Bowser Jr. Duck Hunt Dog is hilarious but I can understand his inclusion as an unexpected surprise, but Bowser Jr (and by extension the Koopalings if those are real alts) really caught me off guard in the leak, and if I didn't see him in action I honestly don't think I would have believed it.

It's better to expect the worst-case scenario to avoid disappointment. This is my outlook as well.
That way, if there are more characters, it will be a pleasant surprise!

I crunched through xenoblade IN A WEEK. Well, 1.5 weeks. Very glad I did. I don't know that I have time to beat anything else before smash release. Maybe some mega man games, but i beat them all before. I can give pac-land a whirl? lol.

I think i've beaten/played all the games corresponding to all the newcomers. Shulk was the last one, and I just checked that off the list.

So gaf, what's your smash bros game cred? Which characters on the roster have you played in other games? Which ones have you not?

This one's fun and I'm catching up so:

Mario: Every Mario title except the Mario vs. DK series
Zelda: Every title except Zelda 1 (though I am doing it) and 2
Metroid: Every title except Hunters
Donkey Kong: Every title in the Country/Land lineage and Jungle Beat
Yoshi: Yoshi's Story. Need to get around to playing Yoshi's Island SNES sometime.
Pokemon: Every mainline generation and the N64 Stadiums/Snap
StarFox: StarFox 64 only
Kid Icarus: NES title and Uprising
Kirby: Kirby Super Star Ultra, 64: The Crystal Shards, Dream Land 3, Triple Deluxe (started), Epic Yarn (started)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance & Awakening; started Radiant Dawn and FE7 is on VC waiting for me
Punch Out: VC NES version (need to get Punchout Wii soon)
Wario: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Game & Wario (still need to get Shake It someday)
Earthbound: Started Earthbound, have to finish Mother 3
Gyromite (ROB): Never played this
Ice Climbers: Never played this
Pikmin: Haven't played any of them but I do have 3 sitting on my hard drive thanks to the Mario Kart 8 promo
Sonic: Nearly every title barring Shuffle, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Sonic Battle, Sonic The Fighters and the DS version of Sonic Colors (I don't even know how this is possible)
Metal Gear: None unless Revengeance counts
Animal Crossing: None
Wii Fit: None
Xenoblade: Have a REALLy early file still saved but my brother has the disc right now
Megaman: Damn near every title in every franchise with the Star Force series being the only three games I know I've never touched before.
Pac-Man: NES version and Ms. Pac Man on the Game Boy

So you're predicting three unannounced characters?

Gutsy.

Dark Pit, easily. Before the leak, I thought this was among the worst character requests I had ever seen, and thought that Sakurai would never add him in as a playable character.

Same on Jr.

I didn't think Jr had a chance. I've always wanted him in Smash, but he never appeared often in request polls and he isn't really that popular in general. I was imagining more a paint brush based moveset, but what we ended up with is a million times more unique and better.

It's nice to have him. It really seems like the Mario series is "complete" in Smash, much like the Kirby series. Anyone else is just a bonus, the cores are all here.

Also I would have been ultra hyped at Doc returning. Never in a million years would I have seen him returning.

Wii Fit Trainer is the only acceptable answer for the whole game, but for the actual latest leak, probably Dr. Mario coming back would have suprised me.

There's something really disheartening about Lucas' exclusion. I know Mother 3 didn't release outside of Japan and is a fairly niche game, all things considered, but Lucas still has some innate connection to the Smash Bros. series that I can't quite articulate. He was supposed to be in Melee (well, whatever version of him existed for the N64 version of Mother 3), and when he finally made it into Brawl, he was given a fairly major role in the Subspace Emissary alongside two Mother 3 bosses. It's weird seeing a game that was so heavily featured in the previous Smash Bros. completely disappear from the series, going from a character, stage, and two bosses to nothing at all.

I think the only thing I really really want at this point is just a really awesome opening CG with lots of game references like Melee had. All of the CG stuff they've done so far has been beyond stellar, and they even went so far as to make one for the AKB48 thing.

I'm fully prepared for a "previously released cg clipshow", though.

What if we get Amiibos for smash only to find out that the NFC scanners in our gamepads have been broken this entire time due to a factory defect? I don't recall anything else using the NFC scanner up to this.

Wonder Red / The Wonderful 100
4th Place (Victory Music!)

Notable Appearences
The Wonderful 101 (2013)

Bio
Wonder Red, real name Will Wedgewood, is the main hero of The Wonderful 101, a member of the CENTINELS Planetary Secret Service, and the young leader of the Wonderful 100. Having just joined the Wonderful Ones after finishing a year of comprehensive training, Earth Defense War III is his first experience in combat. Though technically still a rookie, he is extremely gifted, achieving a record score in both the written and field sections of the CENTINEL tactical examinations. However, his inexperience has led Blue and Green to doubt his abilities as a leader on more than one occasion. Brimming with passion for justice, he takes a firm stance against those who threaten peace, but his by-the-books attitude and serious personality can occasionally rub people the wrong way.

What NeoGAF Says
“The main 5, or 7 would be more than enough, but having a tiny little group throwing out huge attacks would be wonderful. Bayo has no way of getting in, but W101 are ripe for show casing a really technical character.” - atro0cious

“W101 is my favorite new IP from Nintendo.” - Neoxon

“He would be the Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful character to have in the game.” - Benzychenz

“Represents a new foray into the roster of Nintendo IPs and show enough creativity to allow it to happen. TW101 in particular was originally designed to be an all-star cast. If Smash is a representation of Nintendo's past, present and future, there are no better candidates.” - NotLiquid

Ice Climbers went from being in the Melee intro (and revealed at E3 2001), to playing a small role in the Subspace Emissary, had a stage in each entry they were in, and now only have a Polar Bear enemy in Smash Run as their sole form of representation (assuming no more characters/no DLC).
