Apple announces Apple Watch

They all have the interchangeable bands. It's the stainless version of the watch itself which is supposed to be the cheapest one, but the link bracelet is likely to be either a separate purchase or a more expensive version (since it seems more expensive to make than those plastic bands). I'd guess something like $450 for this exact configuration?

Personally I think if they have ranges from 350 - 10K like some people are suggesting it will be a big mistake.

If they can find a way to keep the ranges the way they do with their phones and ipads. Within a few hundred dollars, they would be in great shape.

Go from 350-699 and then sell the bands from 29-79 or something like that.

Love the watch but I'm slightly disappointed in the lack of sleep tracking.

I guess it justifies keeping an UP24 in the other wrist. Or getting one of those Withings systems or something.

A 3rd party app will fix that. There's already companies that do that for your iphone, they'll just have a watch one. It measures movement and heart rate, that's all u need.

It would a bit pointless for the watch to have a dedicated GPS antenna when the required iPhone already has one.

The GPS would make tracking exercise distances WITHOUT having the iPhone present possible. Like running or cycling. If apple adds that and makes it waterproof, you can add swimming to the exercise list and it's something I know a lot of people would buy. I personally know some avid water polo players.

I really like this design

I wanted this, but I think I'll go for that standard black leather strap, because I think the strap in that photo is going to be obscenely expensive.

Crafted from the same 316L stainless steel alloy as the case, the Link Bracelet has more than 100 components. The machining process is so precise, it takes nearly nine hours to cut the links for a single band. In part that’s because they aren’t simply a uniform size, but subtly increase in width as they approach the case. Once assembled, the links are brushed by hand to ensure that the texture follows the contours of the design. The custom butterfly closure folds neatly within the bracelet. And several links feature a simple release button, so you can add and remove links without any special tools. Available in stainless steel and space black stainless steel.

That shit ain't gonna be cheap.

That's the kind of precision you'd never expect a competitor to do, ever. And that's the level of detail they're putting on the damn strap.

This just screams "wait for the 2nd generation". I honesty feel like this will be like the iPad 1, it won't shine until the 2nd version comes out.

Any wearable device needs to be waterproof I feel like. More I think about it, more I think I'll wait till they give it at least the same protection that the Galaxy S Sport has.

350$ for some shitty tech like that AND it requires an iPhone? Lolololol. I can't believe why anyone would pay more than 75-100$ for that shit.

Do we have any details about what 'requires an iPhone' means? Obviously it's an extension of the phone, but what happens if your phone is dead or not near you, it will function on some level for sure, but to what degree?

I guess it will be mainly a clock with fitness tracking.

Do we know if this thing uses MotionX?

Well this is certainly disappointing. I'm sure by gen 2 they will release a much better version, but I'm really not seeing 350+ here.

it's because smart watches are ridiculous.

talking into one while wearing google glass is about the most 'lets look back on technology and cringe' thing I can think of. Anyone getting photographed doing that will feel silly in 10 years.

I was skeptical at first when I saw the first picture, but now that I can see all the designs, I think its genius.

Samsung offered one? or two watches. Its great that Apple have come out with a three watches with different size screens and different bands and faces.

I want to get this one for the bub!

I don't want her to carry an iphone yet - but I would love to send her smilies while im at work!

I'm not really writing off the merits of having it on the device. However, your scenario does not include the iPhone which the watch requires at all times and relies heavily for it's apps.

Hmm, I do quite like it after delving deeper into all the media surrounding it. But it lacks four things in my eyes:

- No GPS.
- No native sleep tracking
- Inability to work fully without an iPhone attached
- No waterproofing

It does seem like in future revisions, those will become standard, so I think I'll wait.

Samsung's on their sixth smartwatch as of now.

It says Waterproofing on the OP?

I think that profile picture makes the watch look so ugly, it's very bulky and the rounded corners look bad to me. Granted some of the straps are nice, but the centerpiece looks pretty ugly.

Well, you can't send her smilies if she doesn't have an iphone with the watch?

Yep, the design reminds me of the original iPad too. I better the apple watch 2 will look way better in design / thinness same with iPad to iPad 2.

Apple Watch Update: More Details and Hands-On Impressions
I also learned that you’ll load apps onto the watch from your iPhone. And you’ll be able to rearrange those app icons into little clusters on the home screen. (To do that, you’ll use the same technique you do on the iPhone: Hold your finger down until they start wiggling, and then drag them around.)

Oh, and there’s a “Ping My Phone” button on the watch, which will make your phone beep. Great when you’ve lost your phone somewhere in the house.

The fanciest model, the gold Apple Phone Edition, comes in a gorgeous jewelry box — which doubles as a charger. The back of the box has a Lightning connector, and the inside of the box has the watch’s magnetic round charger pad, standing vertically. So as you retire each night, you can just lay your gold watch into its case and let it charge.

It's design doesn't excite and, for me at least, the appearance of a watch is the most important feature. The UI itself - functionality aside - seems a few gens behind that on the Moto 360. For me to justify something I actually don't need or may not use that much (especially considering the work place), Apple needed to hook me right off the bat but sadly they came out with a Galaxy Gear.

On this issue of smart watches; surely they are nothing more than a fitness accessory? You can't really engage with your day to day apps - you just get notifications
