What I don't understand is why Apple created a new design language for the UI after they just brought OS X and iOS back to uniformity.

OS X and iOS aren't uniform, though. They're a good visual match but they still have different design principles.

If you're talking about typeface choice specifically and San Francisco vs. Helvetica Neue, it's because Helvetica is a classic and gorgeous font but it's not the most legible choice for tiny screens.

Apple Watch's UI is pretty much carries over the design language of iOS 7, it just adapts it to make more sense for the new form factor and hardware specifications: the new typeface is for easier reading on the small screen; predominant black background for lower battery drain; round icons to differentiate the short lived watch apps from the full fledged iOS ones.

design language is exactly the same (flat design) but they are using a new easier to use typeface (San francisco). for a smaller device.

I'm a designer, and I was using it (San francisco) the other day. It holds up really well at 7pts/9pts than Helvetica Light (ios7 primary type), as it is thicker and more legible as a result.

When you design a new product with new input methods, trying to fit it around a pre-existing UI doesn't work well; you are more constrained in how you can present it. Better to design something new and then work your way to a middle ground bit by bit, like they're starting to with OSX.

don’t forget about the abundance of moving images (butterflies on watch face) and 3D emoji and 3D activity medals.

it has a lot of elements that are very animated and 3D. the icons on the home screen some and app interfaces are flat, but there’s a whole lot of flamboyant stuff that we don’t see in iOS or Mac OS anymore.

Pretty good event, I thought. Really surprised how taken I am with the new Macbook. Even though we've basically known everything about.. finally seeing it be real is AMAZING.

I'm all in on the watch.. but the event still felt kinda light as far as demos go. But I guess thats the thing.. the watch can do whatever you want it to. There is no one version of the story to tell.. the thing will be as varied in functionality in the way that every person's phone is different. Thats cool, I guess. But its gonna be a year or two at least for all the blanks to be filled in.

I mean, I'm not expecting to be able to favorite and repost soundcloud tracks on Day1 but eventually all that stuff will arrive.

Pretty intense stuff. Really curious to see how it plays out.

I'm cool with anything up to $1000 for Apple Watch steel with steel link bracelet
+ $49.90 for sports band
+ $149.99 for leather band

Going to be expensive, this.

Nailed it.

Apple Watch steel with steel link bracelet up to $1000 => is $999
+ $49.90 for sports band => is $49.00
+ $149.99 for leather band => is $149.00

I don't think Gruber's speculation on Apple Watch is generally very informed, but I do agree that Apple is almost obliged to make a $10-20K version.

- Oligarchs, sheiks and what not use iPhones
- They also use expensive watches only
- Apple Watch is meant to be an essential companion
- For the ultra rich glancing an expensive watch has more grace than fiddling with a pleb phone
- If there is no $10K version, they either have to
-- 1 wear something 'cheap'
-- 2 not benefit of an Apple Watch

Even if it was not exactly in Apple's ethos, the fact that Edition even exists tells that they understand this dynamic.

In fact, I can well see that in a few years we have Edition shop-in-shops and standalone shops. Like Nokia stores had for Vertu.

Nailed it again.

Apple Watch Edition with sport band $10K
Apple Watch Edition with bright red buckle $17K

Well it certainly was an interesting event.

And it really shows a bit of a turning point with the beats purchase, the new macbook and the watch. In a way it reminds me of the old pre-iPod Apple days where their products were exclusive things that no-one I knew had or could afford.

Makes me wonder if their supposed car will be positioned alongside the Mercedes/BMW's rather than something less exclusive.

I really like that segmented leather band on the 42mm model. I have pretty small wrists though so am definitely getting the 38mm.

Fairly confident I'll be getting the space grey sport edition, but I haven't completely ruled the steel one out yet. Looking forward the 10th. I heard you had to make reservations to try one on.

The aluminum one makes sense for me because im a dude whole might fall down.
