I am terrible at first person shooters but for my first playstation game I am having a lot of fun just grinding and learning on my own, beautiful game very happy with it

Am I crazy?

I love Destiny. Me and my buddies haven't had this kind of coop fun since.. Well since Halo.

Game is amazing! Loved the alpha, loved
The beta.

I bought a PS4 for this game and couldn't be happier.

I must be old and crazy.. Because most of the people around here seem to hate it.

Not at all. Sure, the game has its fair share of issues, but the general consensus seems to be the core gameplay is solid and fun. I just don't think Destiny is going to completely light the world on fire like some people might have expected.

Reviews for this game are gonna be so interesting, I would have never expected this game becoming so polarizing.

I expect something like 84 for metacritic.

Mother of Goat, the soundtrack! It's amazing. The one during the
Solar Array
battle on Earth and the one during the fight
with the Princes
on the Moon were pure epic. And the tunes are so diversified between each other. I was tempted to go for the 360 to play with custom soundtrack but seems like I won't be needing that :D

Also. While I haven't finished the "story mode", I have to say I like how Bungie decided to handle the narrative. I think they were going for some sort of "tv pilot" structure, giving outmost importance to establish the Universe first instead of hit the players with a bunch of intricate political intrigue or "spicing" the story with social and historical commentary.
Since they'll drop a bunch of episo... dlcs after this, I don't think people should give up on the narrative so soon.
People complain a lot about not many games having a narrative similar to Dark Souls, where you have to tie the pieces of the puzzle by yourself, and I think while not perfect Destiny's narrative is doing that and going in the right direction. I was going through an hive base on the Moon and was all like "stop shooting at me assholes, I'm looking in awe at your spaceship and your architecture! Let me admire the remnants of your civilization, I am one of you!".
Only complaint I would argue at the game is the fact that the Grimoire are only available through the app. While they don't necessarily reveal anything mindblowing about the setting or the enemies, they still give a unique flavour to each faction and to the story of each planet. They could have easily handle that in-game.

You're the same age as me so yes you're old :p

I also love what I've played of Destiny so far, though I didn't partake in the hype train due to only getting my PS4 after the beta.

The main problem is, people are trying to blow through the story so fast... As for hype... it was good as long it was hype not as I mentioned before - unreal expectations :)

I'm 31 so let's be old together.

*raises glass of alka seltzer*

*raises glass of red wine*

ps. I might be old, but I licked my LE yesterday, when I got it delivered :D

I'm 36 and love the game so far, brofist.

I guess the older we get, we understand how things are actually and we enjoy with what we have right?

Brofist!

I wasn't really feeling the Alpha or Beta, maybe it's because I was playing alone but the few times I played with friends, it still wasn't very fun. Bullet sponges, meh AI and standard missions really bored me.

I did enjoy the Crucible sometimes but it was pretty unbalanced. Is there a Crucible gamemode where there's preset loadouts and/or old-school weapon pick ups? I'd likely just pick up the game for the Crucible and I'll occasionally touch the missions. Doesn't seem like a good investment if only a small part of the game interests me, but percentages are funny and that small part might make up for the entire package.

Also, do the classes ever feel truly distinct as you progress? At level 8, they all felt the same to me with slight differences that didn't really give me new ways of playing.

Rent and play with Gafers. If you like it, pick it up!^^

Barley had the time to play more than 3-4 hours so far. I've been reading the impressions people have been posting here, maybe I've missed some posts but could someone tell me how the feel about the longevity of the game. Seeing how people have already finished the story missions, how do you feel about the replay value of the strike missions. Have any of you attempted the Raid in the game?
My biggest concern about the game is that after few months the PvE will be dead in the game.

After having played the game after Beta, what strikes me as disappointing is the presentation of the story, especially lack of supporting cast. Now I never played Halo, but I cannot believe that apart from Master Chief and Cortana there were no other noteworthy NPCs in the game.

Destiny positions itself like an MMO shooter with shared locations/hubs but Bungie in my opinion forgot to take some MMO staples which would enrich the gameplay and the world.

For instance, the Earth Cosmodrome really feels like an arbitrary hub you get thrown into. It's a playground with respawning mobs and it shows. In normal MMOs you ususally get a quest hub: a city or settlement with rudimentary NPCs who give you quests. In Destiny you have to look for beacons, which add no flavor to the game and make the world look empty. Was it so hard to create a small outpost with a few NPCs where you land when you go on a free roam? It would be so awesome, add some life into the place and create interesting characters.

Right now, even with other players jumping in my game, I feel very much alone. Unless you run a party of 3 with headphones, the whole experience is that of going around killing respawning mobs. No NPCs, little exposition, no effect on the world.

What is even worse, because story missions take place in this shared space, there's no object permanency to anything. All you do is ask your Ghost to scan things and wait for Dinkalge-voice to pour exposition on you. Oh there's an AI! Oh, these are the new monster types!
That wizard came from the moon!
Oh, the ship is being fixed!
It's not enough! Ghost is the only notable NPC in the game, who tells you everything and it's a non-entity/robot with 0 personality, so there's no compelling character to attach yourself to. The story is so poorly conveyed that I got more information from Grimoire mission cards than from within the game! Honestly, why is every thing story related is hidden in a Grimoire without an in-game interface? AC2 had an in-game encyclopedia. The first strike on Earth I honestly didn't know why we were doing it apart from "these are the bad guys". No motivation, no backstory, no exposition. The boss is a bigger flying globe so no custom skin. Any MMO does it better nowadays, with short in-game cutscenes or exposition.

Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is solid and the game is very fun, but in my opinion Bungie should have realized that this is not an MMO, it's a mostly-singleplayer shooter with partying opportunities and, therefore, it has to have story exposition with proper cinematics, animations and characters. What is worse, is not that other shooters and probably Halo had better story, but even WoW nailed the story exposition better.

I largely agree. The story presentation is abysmal. Actually, the story itself is fairly bad too.

All in all, I've enjoyed the gameplay, but the lows are very low and the highs are not all that high.

I'll be getting my ps4 destiny bundle this evening. But this thread is making me feel like i should have picked the last of us bundle instead... What a difference in tone this thread has gotten compared to 24h ago.

Anyway, i'll give it a try this weekend. I can always trade it.

Yeah, but a lot of big games are like this. Remember the Last of Us? Still a lot of salt every time it appears at the top of sales charts...
I have not gotten to end game yet, but mid 80's would jive with how site's reviews in progress are going. Some will like it a lot more,, others less, kind of like gaf^^

You have posted you dislike of the game several times now, but continue to update us. Why are you still playing if you dislike it this much? Please, for your own sake, play something you do like than.

And it already outsold Titan Fall and Watch Dogs in one day so we will get a sequel. Hope it lives up to your expectations.
I missed something....

It outsold Titanfall LTD and Watch Dogs LTD? Or did it just best each of their day one totals?

The only 3mm mic-included headset I have is a pair of EarPods that came with my iPhone, so I'm playing with those. I think this game sounds amazing with earbuds - EarPods aren't even that high quality compared to other headsets I have and the positioning and audio still sound amazing. I know exactly when an enemy is behind me, above me, or below me based off just hearing. Definitely recommend playing with a headset.

This just seems too apologetic and is thrown around here too often. A decent story isn't an unreal expectation. Decent setpieces aren't unreal expectations. A balanced pvp experience also isn't an unreal expectation. Especially after the halo series, in which those 3 aspects where perfectly nailed down. It does a lot of things right, but severly lacks in aspects bungie excelled at earlier for some reason.

I'm 29 btw, still to young for the old folks club or can I still join? My knee hurts when the weather changes, so that might help my application ;)

Played a good 7 hours straight last night...enjoying the game a lot so far.
Unfortunately, I spent the majority of that time playing solo. :(
I work graveyard, so of course all my buds are playing when I'm sleeping or at work.
I'm typically on between 0800 PST/1600 GMT...If you're down to play around that time, please add me!

Edit: PSN - Kontroversy

Finally going to be able to sit down and play this game tonight.

Been listening to the Bombcast today though, Jeff did not sound super enthused.

I spent around 15-20 hours in the beta, and I'm kind of dreading having to do that stuff again first up.
Really? Jeff wasn't enthused? I'm shocked!

He's become the Droopy Dog of video games.

love the avatar

OT: So far I'm a level 9 finished all of Earth and am really loving the game, the story I actually like I'm going into the lore and it's really good, and the only issue I seem to have is the loot system I think it could be better.

Play with buddies and you will be fine^^ Mathematically, there is more love than hate, but those who hate are making it known... again and again^^

Fellow graveyard shifter here. I'm actually at work waiting to be able to get home and finally play more than an hour or so. And most of my friends will be sleeping when I play tomorrow night.

"Want to check out the strategy guide for Destiny? Just head to http://www.primagames.com/code and use the following code:

hmnr-nqd9-d8u8-ftav

Oddly enough, it seems that the code can be used unlimited times. Doesn't seem to matter what store you say you got it from, and for the date I entered 09/08/14.

A friend bought the guide and sent me the code after he discovered it isn't unique. Enjoy – and buy the physical guide if you feel like you'll use it often at all."

The beta gave me the feeling that it was supposed to be an MMO but when the first leaks appeared and people were like "LOL, Bungie doing a f***ing MMO, good luck with that" they (or/and Activision) got scared and tried to turn it around into a more traditional shooter. It's a game that doesn't know what it is. It's not an MMO. It's not story driven. It's not varied combat.

Or maybe it is just a standard Bungie game by a developer that gets too much credit for past games. Bungie is loved for creating Halo but even I as an avid Halo fanboy have to recognize that half of Halo's 5 hour campaign is made up from backtracking through sameish corridors and fighting lots and lots of the same enemies in the same areas over and over again while a robot AI opens doors along the way (Library). And in Reach they started with the annoying "please turn back to the battlefield" messages killing any sense of exploration. Sounds familiar, right?

Yea I'm at work right now as well. What time do you get your gaming in? We should link up if we play at a common time.

I think the game is fun, but it's not without its glaring flaws. Story exposition, lack of interaction with the world and people, mission structure, loot distribution and bullet sponges are a few of the things that should and could have been a lot better. Still, I like the game and I'm jonesing to jump in again after work.

Enjoying the game about a such as I thought I would. Game isn't that much fun playing by yourself. The missions are bland and there is not enough loot to point where I am like one more mission I want see see what I unlock. The plan is to play until Forza Horizon then it goes to eBay.

is there anything interesting in that guide? i flipped through one but didn't buy it but it didn't seem very...substantial?

It is absolutely baffling to me that there so many "defend robot dinklage while he analyzes" missions.... So much money spent on this game, so much focus testing and planning, and nobody at bungie/activision thought that maybe this shit would get tedious??

So I finally got to play this game yesterday. Teamed up with my brother and a friend and we had a blast. We're currently halfway through the story missions on the Moon and no matter how boring and repetitive the missions are, we're loving the coop play.
We never played Halo for the story. We played it for the coop. Bungie nailed it again when it comes to that.

Yeah finding loot chests usually isn't very exciting either. Usually it's pocket change and some materials you could've farmed off the planet itself. =/

So far me and my friend have been playing this all co-op and have gotten through the first mission in
Venus and got told to get a Vex Head after visiting the Reef.

We've both been pretty much complaining about how little effort was put into the use of the environments and such. The caves are pretty much copy and paste. I mean the planets themselves aren't really that big at all, so what's up? The Sparrows hardly have much space to be of use. And I see a lot of those dark fog doors that were in the Alpha/Beta that people assumed were just blocked off and would be open for us in the full game, but so far they're all closed off. Really curious to see if they open at all at a certain point.

PvP seems like a step down from Halo so that's not really gonna play too much into the longevity of the game for me. I was just hoping that maybe Bungie saying we haven't seen everything in the Alpha/Beta just meant there's a lot more to do than what we did in the missions, but so far there's not.

So, has anyone gotten to the "ending" of the game? Just wondering since it doesn't seem like there has been a huge fuss about the limited missons/planets/etc yet.

Gonna keep playing until the end, but these are just my feelings towards the game at the moment.

I actually have some big issues with the chests and the way you explore. I just had a session of Patrol where so many things kept sticking out as pretty big blocks on the player.

First, I went to the moon to do some bounties(mainly the 6 patrol quests), but I also want to try and find Golden Chests. The thing with these are I'm going in expecting them to be well hidden, and given all the classes have jumps that give them a large amount of reach they could be anywhere.

Anyway, I come to this spot.

DA1yZwUl.jpg

Just going around killing people, I wanted to have a high vantage spot so I tried to get to that cliffside right in front of me. Except it turns out that is all an invisible wall that slides you off, which actually messed up how I wanted to approach this fight. That sucked. Issue #2 is also sorta here as you see where those enemies stand, and how more often than not they have a little cave behind them. These are, mostly, just one small empty rooms that are dead ends, pretty blatant spawn closets. Well, SOME OF THEM actually have chests. So you're encouraged to run in and check all of them...and that's weird.

0YN02GDl.jpg

Next, I came here. I'm on top of the little building you come to in the first or second mission, and I realized there was actually a path on top that leads across. That seemed more 'directed' and I figured maybe there will be a gold chest here. There was a nice vantage point, but once again....could you tell me where the player CAN'T go here? That side of the hill with all the circles, you get pushed off the higher spot, but can stand on the lower half. I actually circled around and an invisible wall pushed me off into that yellow abyss and I died. Lame.

cfDcYnWl.jpg

Finally, I had a mission to go to some area. Took out the sparrow and started driving, ramped over a hill into this area. Note the arrow placement. Guess what? That ENTIRE space is a fucking kill zone. It started a countdown and killed me. There's even a guard rail in front of this spot that is broken, almost looking like an invitation, but you can't go anywhere down there without dying. But that building on the other side you can, along with the area across it.

That shit is a huge bummer.

I know! "Yeah... I level to 50 over the weekend in Diablo... it's ok. I might play again for the review."^^

That's how Jeff has always been though, people act like it's new (and to be fair, he really likes D3 - it's Marvel Heroes he plays like that!) :)

Anyways, looking forward to playing this game in about a week. Fuck work.

is there anything interesting in that guide? i flipped through one but didn't buy it but it didn't seem very...substantial?

Looking through it it covers just about every location/map/item e.t.c but i think i would prefer discovering all that myself.

Certainly not worth paying money for . Mind you i have never brought a strategy guide in my life.

Wow I did this stupid thing with a sword for a while and when I though it was over even more bosses spawned.

I am sorry but I have better things to do with my time. This game is fucking horrible as is. Never even bothering with it again unless Bungie issues a massive apology and update. This may be the worst flop ever.

A massive apology? I hope they'll at least send you a cookie also.

It is absolutely baffling to me that there so many "defend robot dinklage while he analyzes" missions.... So much money spent on this game, so much focus testing and planning, and nobody at bungie/activision thought that maybe this shit would get tedious??

it's tedious but i think the shooting is fun enough for me. i've been replaying the first strike over and over just because it's kinda satisfying mowing down a bunch of aliens.

Interesting thought. I certainly agree that the game doesn't know exactly what it is.
