Apple announces Apple Watch

The more I think about the more I get a smart watches ultimate use. Keeping your phone out of your hands for longer periods of time.

- when you're in a loud setting and need your phone at eyesight not to miss calls/texts. Solves it.
- when you're in a meeting thinking about checking your phone if you've gotten a response back. Solves it.
- when you're cooking or cleaning or doing any activity that requires your hands and need to stay connected. Solves it.
- when you're driving. Solves it.

It's going to make users far less dependent on phones, which is going to keep phones in pockets and purses longer (which ironically means they would be more useful smaller instead Of bigger).

I think this device will be a success if I won't need to take my phone out of my pocket except when I absolutely choose to.
You're really working the PR tonight.

I'm really surprised (and disappointed) that the product is asymmetrical. As a left-hander that wears a watch on my right wrist and actually likes the Apple Watch, I'm bummed out. I wouldn't have expected that kind of thoughtless design from Apple.

Can't you just flip it around?

Surely there will be some solution to this... perhaps a left handed model for their more talented and intelligent customers?

Can't you just flip it around?

It's not centered.

I'm not sold on it yet. I think it looks pretty neat, but not sure if I can justify the price for one since for me it would be just a convenience thing, like not having to pull out my phone to see the time / date / texts etc.

If Apple Pay takes off that could be a convenience I'd pay for, just holding my watch up to the scanner thing to pay for something? That would be pretty awesome.

I can see it being pretty popular with people who are big into fitness.

I really don't understand all the hate over the fact that it's a rectangle though. It looks pretty nice to me and I never expected it to be a circle to begin with. It doesn't seem like a circle makes sense for anything other than a traditional watch-face that just tells time, and this obviously does a lot more than that. Yes I've seen the moto watch, but that just doesn't seem as practical for all this is trying to do. I also think the subtle curved display around the edges is a nice touch.

The one thing I'm concerned about as far as looks go is it looks a little to thick, but from what I can tell it doesn't look to bulky when actually on someone's wrist.

A couple questions:

Have they said whether the display is LCD or OLED?

How does ApplePay work with the watch if the iPhone requires TouchID?

I think this will do well with certain people, and given time more uses for it will be found. Maybe in a few years it will be much more appealing for a wider public.

But
Why did they show the photos app during the presentation? Who wants to view photos on their watch? It seems much more convenient to me to take my phone out of my pocket. I understand if you quickly want to send a photo to someone, but they didn't show that. They were just zooming in on a big set of photos.

I said its not there yet and I'm waiting on 2nd or 3rd gen. I'm just pointing to what I think the endgame is, doing to phones what the iPad did to laptops. Staring at your phone screen instantly takes you out of life. On the other hand, getting an imperceptible tap on the wrist has no effect and doesn't yank you out of your existing experience.

It's still rude to look at your watch but yea it's better than pulling out a phone.

-need to see those nude snapchat images with friends around but can't because of a bigger screen. Solves it.

Not just in terms of conversation. No matter what you're doing, having to stop, dig your phone out, open it, etc. takes you out of your experience. Whereas getting a light tap and turning your wrist over doesn't. There are absoluteu notifications that warrant being yanked out of real life experiences, but there are far too many that don't - and rummaging through a purse or pocket for unnecessary ones sucks.

I can't tell u how many times pickup basketball games were put on pause cuz someone got a call and had to run to their duffel bag. If you have the watch, you just turn your wrist over. Then depending on the importance, u get your phone or leave it.

A wearable tech watch that does its job well actually keeps you more in tune with real life I feel like.

Playing pickup ball while wearing a watch? Want to get your ass beat, I suppose?

Never wear a watch when paying pickup. WTF, man.

I sport a lot, if the watch can do the following i will be all over it as standalone:

- can call people
- play music
- i can add notes into it + agenda
- is water proof
- gets a mount for a bike
- has a internal heart pulse meter
- has a gps that can track where i walk, how far i walk, what pace i have with decent software build in with it.
- can have something like google earth on it or other gps data that can show me where i'm at any given time.
- can at least with gps have a 8 hour battery life time.

Then i will be all over it no matter if it cost me 1000 euro's, atm i need to carry a phone with me and a sport watch to do this and a normal day watch. It would be a massive step up if i can move this towards 1 device.

The looks really don't bother me as i have absolute no taste in fashion anyway. The functionality is what interests me.

Sounds like it can do everything on the list but be waterproof. It apparently is only 'water resistant' which means sweat/washing your hands/splashes of water.

Also some of the functions you listed require a phone to be nearby such as GPS. I can't imagine GPS being in some of these things with the batteries being so damn small and with these LCDs. I already take my phone with me on workouts via a sports armband to listen to music so I guess I'm not totally blown off by it.... yet. The music on the watch would be through a tiny speaker as it doesnt even have a headphone jack so i would have to carry my phone for music anyways. I think my biggest issue is that I want the 5.5 inch model but I don't want a 5.5 inch phone strapped to me..

and there's no mention of the battery life? does this have to be charged every day too like a modern phone?

Nothing has been said but it'll probably be 1-2 days. 2 days would probably be some sort of miracle with that type of screen.

Was it ever mentioned here that it requires an iPhone 5 or later to work? Not sure if thread worthy.

Yea many times. They mentioned it in the actual press briefing as well. It's similar to the big Android Wear phones that need Kit Kat or later I believe.

You're really working the PR tonight.

Eh... He's just posting stuff that he thinks a Smartwatch or any Smartwatch would provide. I mean, you were just in another thread going off about Google Wallet and how Apple Pay will require transaction information to be stored even though numerous others were stating agst.

I never get why people go off into a Google vs Apple war..

So how long till they outlaw looking at your watch and driving?

In Melbourne, Australia its a $430 fine and 3 demerit points for looking at your phone without one of those phone cradle things. Such a load of crap. I mean people shouldn't be using their phones while driving, but putting it in a cradle doesn't make it right. Plus $430 is too much. Though I feel like there are WAY too many crashes where the guy behind hits the guy in front (obviously been looking at his phone).

Heheh sorry but all I'm hearing when reading this is "I need toy." "I need toy."

Wouldn't mind smart watches taking off though. Maybe sometime in the future there'll be one with an analogue face indistinguishable from the real thing. That's when I'll buy one.

You're on a video game forum, this whole place is centered on the idea of adults playing with electronic toys. There are some legitimate fitness applications, but yes, for the most part people want it on a 'toy' level, what's wrong with that?

I've looked at again after sleeping on it. And its still hideous so ugly :S. Even the new iPhone looks pretty gross but then again if I bought phones for looks I wouldn't have not Note 3.

Nothing, which is why my remark was in jest.

Phones are different though, they come from a tool perspective, watches are the most socially adopted type of male jewellery, aesthetics should come first. Smart watches do need to be concerned with size and user interface more significantly though.

Exactly and I wouldn't ever be wearing anything that looks like the Apple Watch.

I'm really excited for smartwatches (so many uses I won't have to pull my phone out of my pocket ever again!), but in my opinion Apple dropped the ball on this one. I think it's really, really bad looking.
While I love the Moto 360's design, I don't strongly prefer round displays/traditional watch design, but there is something about that Apple Watch edge that just looks so bad to me.
The sport edition is kinda okayish, because the design fits the wrist band but with every other band the Watch looks so out of place.
It kinda looks like a small second gen iPhone strapped to your wrist :S

what happens if I forget my phone at home, will I still get text sms in the watch?
will I still be able to use the apps?

how do I get access to a cellular network with the watch?

Exactly and I wouldn't ever be wearing anything that looks like the Apple Watch.
And that's certainly fair enough. I think the design is okay, the bands all looks nice. This one looks very nice to me.

I think I need to see them in person though, the Moto 360 people keep referencing looks nice in photos, but it's so absurdly thick that it just looks stupid in real life.

And this one comes in two sizes, but presumably they're the same thickness, so the smaller one is going to look stranger. If they're the same resolution, but the smaller one has a higher PPI, I might favor that, depending on how it looks. Apple stores need to have a bunch of them in for people to check out.

I dunno why everyone on the internet is so down on this.

If anyone can make a new product appeal to the masses, it's Apple. And they've proven it multiple times in the last 15 years.

The Apple iPOD - Late entry into the MP3 player market, ended up completely reworking the music industry.

iPhone - At a time when the Razr was the most popular phone and touch screens were thought of as gimmick technology, the iPhone completely revolutionized how we thought of cellphones.

The iPAD - When this was announced, tablets had been thought of as dead. Microsoft made a half assed effort back in the early 2000's but it took Apple's success reignite a dormant technology.

Smartwatches - We've had smart watches already and they haven't lit the market on fire. To me, if there's a company that's going to do it, I would bet on Apple. Why not?

What has come out of them in the past 15 years that's been a complete flop? I can only think of three products: The G4 Cube, the first iteration of Apple TV and the Apple Hi-Fi (it was a premium priced iPOD speaker dock) That's a pretty damn good track record.
And before people accuse me of being a fanboy, the only Apple products I've owned in my entire life have been iPod classics. I rock an Android phone, do my computing on a PC and prefer my Kindle over a tablet (but if I had to, I'd get an Android tablet).

I like the idea of being always connected through a device on my wrist but I kinda hate the idea of being always connected through a device on my wrist.

It's a shame they seem so hung up on the watch analog, because that just doesn't interest me in the slightest.

What does interest me is the health-tracking applications of these sorts of devices, but the form factor of something like the Jawbone is much more appealing to me. Lightweight functionality, slim, and affordable.

It's just a shame that none of these devices are any really use for swimmers, because that's pretty much all I do other than walk.

I genuinely thought it would have a round face.

The UI is a complete mess and inconsistent, it looks like several design times have created it without knowing what the others were doing.

Aside from the design, I'd have problems paying €350 for this. That's a pretty steep entry price. Plus, I'm just not a watch man, haven't used one since I was 15 or so. Pretty tough sell for me

just to be be sure: did they say anything about it being waterproof? Seems ridiculous to spend 350+ USD on a smart watch that isn't waterproof. Even more so for the "sports" version...

People keep saying that the knob is ugly, but I dig it quite a bit. That's just my preference though. I like the look of analogue mechanics a lot. Especially when they're contrasted with something digital and electronic.

I think round does look nicer for a watch, but the use of a round watch as a screen for multiple things is pretty inconvenient. I like Apple's solution of using round watch faces and populating the corners with other info.
