I know money talks and I said this in other related threads, but I don't get why you'd want to keep a guy around whose every decision regarding conduct and policy will now be scrutinized and met with skepticism or suspicion.

And the league's views/relationships with women are probably just going to come into question again come breast cancer awareness time.

An owner coming under fire. The league owners love their insulation from this. The wall is broken.

Edit: agenda is clear. Senate Hearing coming

If advertisers start pulling out (like Marriott I think is evaluating it) the owners will be forced to take action.

It's still just so surreal to me to think that all of this horrible backlash would be severely cut back, if not nonexistent, if they'd just suspended Rice for 6-8 games to begin with. Now instead Rice is out of football forever and the entire league finally looks as corrupt as it's likely always been...and for mostly nothing.

Yep, all because Roger's fines and suspensions were completely arbitrary and all over the damn place. It finally bit him in the ass.

Call it reactionary or whatever you want from me.

I'm done watching NFL games so long as Roger is still employed by the league owners.

James Harrison wasn't suspended when he beat the fuck out of his girlfriend in 2008 right?

Rooney Rules!

Nope...and the Steelers kept him and unloaded Cedric Wilson for the same offense in the same year! All of these teams are the same, do whatever you can for the players that you think can win you some games. But, after this shit storm, I've got to think the owners and GMs try to keep their noses clean....at least for the immediate future until everyone forgets about it and moves on to something else.

Yeah, I was more laughing at Harrison for popping his mouth off about it.

Suggs didn't face any discipline either. I'm sure if Greg hardy sucked he would have been dropped like a bad habit too.

As bad as it sounds I was really excited to see what ray could do with a new line and kubiaks zone blocking scheme
(after a 6-8 game suspension)
now he will probably never play again. Ray rice sucked last year but the line and the coaches sucked more. Justin frickin forsett was wrecking shit Sunday and I have no doubt rice could have done the same.

Only reason he saying anything because he salty about the fines, suspension and told to change how he plays or gtfo. Remember when he threatened to take his ball and go home and retire from football. Not shocking he still salty at GODell

The NFL is not having a very good couple of days.

In an op-ed written for USA Today, Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler said that the agency would vote on Sept. 30 to kill the television blackout rule which the league has fought to protect.

“With the first weekend of professional football in the books, two things should be abundantly clear,” Wheeler wrote. “The NFL is king; and the Federal Communication Commission’s sports blackout rules are obsolete and have to go.”

Blackout rules were instituted in 1975 to drive fans off their couches in front of free television and to the games with a paid ticket.

But only two games were blacked out last year, and the NFL is raking in television money hand-over-fist, so the need to government intervention seems a bit outdated.

That’s Wheeler’s stance, and he pounded the drum on behalf of fans in Green Bay, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, who nearly missed out on playoff games on TV when ticket sales lagged.

“The bottom line is the NFL no longer needs the government’s help to remain viable,” Wheeler wrote. “And we at the FCC shouldn’t be complicit in preventing sports fans from watching their favorite teams on TV. It’s time to sack the sports blackout rules for good.”

The league has fought to protect the rules, as it helps protect their investments. But a time when they’re working to convince fans to come to the stadium, the stick of a television blackout might be going away.

Just posting some thoughts as I heard tons on sports radio today driving to and from work plus reading the forum but not being able to post much:

- I never knew so many of the NFL GAF had it in for Goddell. Don't get me wrong he should resign and if he doesn't on his own, the owners should force him out but I was under the impression that besides jokes here and there people were generally positive towards him. Doesn't seem that way.

-Ray Rice's wife here, the real victim, is being punished all over. First by Ray and now by some media vultures who keep playing the video over and over.

-Speaking of her being victimized over again, the president of NOW (National Organization of Women) was on ESPN radio on their NYC stations (98.7) on the Micheal Kay show. She is calling for Goddell 's resignation and alluded to working with sponsors to put financial pressure on the NFL to force him out. So far good but then Kay asked her "what do you think of his now wife coming out so strongly defending him?"

She responds by saying every case is different and all women deal with it differently. BUT then goes on to say "it takes courage, brains, and support". Yes I know some women are in abusive relationships and don't leave. But do we really have to paint Janay as stupid or lacking "brains"? And at this moment? Extremely insulting. Maybe this was the only time he did this. She has been with him since HS. From all we know this is completely out of character for him and the first time ever he has hit a woman. So she is staying with him but that doesn't automatically make her dumb. You would think the president of NOW would know better.

When asked why she waited till now and not when the 2 game suspension was announced she simply said at that time they were outraged then but didn't look more into it. But now she claims they have uncovered the NFL under Goddell's war on women. Say what? Yes Goddell has led the NFL in direction against women. She claims it wasn't like that before (when or how it was different she doesn't specify). Apparently under Goddell cheerleaders are treated like shit, cases of domestic violence exist, and women in general are treated bad because Goddell has fostered a warrior culture which celebrated masculinity at the expense of women!

WHAT THE WHAT? This woman came on very reasonable and then it quickly turned into "well I am going to take this moment to tear into something just to burn it down". No doubt cheerleaders are under pair and treated like shit. Apparently she claims they are objectified too!!! No way? Cheerleaders? The women whose sole job is to wear as little clothing as possible so the obese middle aged males in the crowd can objectify them were demeaned by the teams because they made sure they hired really hot women. Hmm

How is the treatment of women any worse than before in the NFL or by its players? Did domestic violence not exist before? How many were players fined, suspended, or banned back in the good old days? Almost 50% of the fans watching and attending are female. Amazing stat which has only now reached this point especially when Goddell and the NFL are apparently hell bent on demeaning women!

- Ray Rice is either a lunatic who fooled everyone for all these years or was drugged out of his mind. He is known locally in the NY/NJ area. Craig Carton, who hosts the morning show on WFAN, knows him personally. He spoke for him at local HSs where Rice did his work. A lot of people on the radio stations know him and have for a long time. Almost everyone claims he was the nicest and kindest. He hid it well. Or it was drugs/alcohol. Either way his career is over.

-Discussing sports related topics in the OT is so infuriating and toxic. Bunch of posters who have no interest in sports or football, and more than likely have some sort of hate towards sports, pile on with generalizations. Deadspin seems to be a site full of these posters. Everything is a conspiracy. ESPN is always hiding something. NFL is always covering up some massive scandal. The longer this goes the simpler it gets really. Goddell and the NFL never bothered to look further into it simply because Ray had been a good citizen, first offense, and they treated it by following the police's lead. Charges against him were lowered and he was entered into a program. Police didn't seem to treat it as anything more than that so neither did Goddell. I do think he hadn't seen the video but that it was available, possibly even in the NFL offices, but they just never gave it a 2nd thought.

- Still can't believe how little of an issue this would have been had Goddell simply done the logical things. At every step he seem to botch it up. Did he have him in his keeper league?

I still don't think there was a coverup, I just think they didn't give a shit. They've been used to this kind of abuse going on, well, probably forever, and they just thought they'd do the minimum and go on with life. But, with the web and social media, that doesn't fly anymore. So everyone learns a lesson the hard way.
