Destiny - Review Thread

Still don't see why people care about the story. Do you buy cod for the magnificent story, or battlefield etc. Nobody cares about story in multiplayer online shooters.

People don't even follow the story in MMOs.
With those shooters you mentioned, I think that's because of the focus on competitive multiplayer. People buying those games just for that. With Destiny, and this is all subjective obviously, but from what I've read from some on GAF and from what I've heard from people I know who have bought Destiny, the PVP suite isn't nearly substantial enough to make up for the lackluster and repetitive solo experience / story

There's also Bungie's history with Halo to consider. Not that Halo is in any way genius storytelling, but the universe and lore was pretty damn interesting I think. It had memorable characters, enemies, and some pretty epic setpieces throughout that original trilogy (ODST also had a pretty good campaign). By comparison, Destiny seems really disappointing with its lack of ability to draw you into its world and its boring mission design.

And you could say part of that is because Bungie didn't set out to make a single-player shooter like Halo, but I don't think they went far enough in the other direction to make up for that. Like I've said before, it just feels like a dull compromise between an MMO and a shooter.

Also, maybe I'm alone in this, but I definitely follow the story and the lore in MMO's. I don't lean on it as much as I would with a single-player game obviously, but it's still a major reason why I continue to play WoW 10 years after launch. I love learning about that world and the characters in it.

Which is exactly what I have been saying from the start. It is also exactly what ton's of people were saying on GAF as a whole.

IF you liked the Beta buy the game. The game is going to basically be just more of what you saw in the Beta. I wasn't expecting much more than that except for one thing, story. I expected the fragmented crap story in the beta would actually be explored much much more.
.

Well I made the mistake of actually expecting more from a AAA title then. I wouldn't be as annoyed if I hadn't bought the digital version :P.

I wonder if this game will get a re-review three or so months from now due to new contents, patched-in features, etc.

Also, there's some DLC out next month, right? I'm guessing these guys won't release anything major in terms of content for the holiday season, so I wonder if that'll be all until next year. What do you guys think?

I think reviewers are not getting the full story here.

I'm more used to Warframe to see how Bungie expected Destiny to be.

There won't be Destiny 2 but just expansions/updates... the story is just the beginning and it will grow with every chapter. New modes, news ways to play, new everything will be added year after year.

Pretty sure the contract with Activision was for 4 games and 4 expansions in the series over 10 years. So there will definitely be sequels and several at that.

- The dialogue given to Peter Dinklage is so terrible. Right at the start you come across a pack of Fallen, clearly visible. He tells you to prepare for a firefight then there's a noise and he says 'What was that'. HMM I WONDER. "It's in the walls" is another clunker. The best that can be said for him is that you just end up ignoring his chatter as it always ends up the same - protect him while he flits around like a camp painter unlocking/hacking or whatever he's doing.

They should have left "That Wizard came from the moon" in the game, because the rest of the dialogue is equally terrible, if not worse.

We just didn't know any better when the Alpha came out.

These scores are still all over the place. Really don't know what to think.

You could just decide for yourself, the opinions of Destiny seem to be very polarized. While the game just doesn't seem to *click* with some people others (myself included) are really enjoying it. It's all just opinions. Some people will like it others will not, simple as that.

- I saw a flock of birds take off out in the Old Russia wasteland when going back and doing an older mission (!) So they do exist outside the tower!
I'm pretty sure that a flock of birds taking off from the car wrecks in Old Russia is the very first thing you see once you're given control over a new character.

Incoherent might be a compliment.

It's not as absurdly offensive in its existence as something like Diablo III, but it's certainly not good, and it certainly is not ANYWHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH TO DESERVE NOT TO BE SKIPPED AT ALL.

The fact that Destiny forces you to watch its inane cutscenes makes me hate it more.

Also, you have to read Grimoire Cards on your cell phone to understand the lore. You can't read them in-game.
i actually think Diablo 3's story is more coherent, has deeper characters, more interesting npc's, and cutscenes than anything in Destiny's story/lore. Plus those CG cutscenes were freaking awesome as icing on the cake.

I'm only level 10 right now (or 9, can't remember), but this is amazingly true.

I hate pre-order culture.

Depends on your taste. If you like shooters, gun play it as good as it gets. Best co-op game released in years.

/s? I mean it's entirely opinion and would never jump on anyone for theirs... but i wouldn't have guessed anyone would consider it the best co-op game in years!

However, solid gun play i agree.

You can't be serious.

I love co-op when it is completely un-structured and left to us to decide on what to do.
- I dont want to artificially stop hit triangle to lift my partner over the ledges or game pauses and makes to cover while the other partner moves along etc.
- Your can partner with people of any skill level. They dont have to be forced to play as medic or class that they dont like. Every one can have fun, shooting and killing.

The game is worth $60. I don't understand why people, who might be relatively interested in a game wait until a price drop to purchase it. Destiny provides at least a solid 20 hours of game play, you're paying $3 an hour (worst case scenario) to be entertained. This is a good value, considering you can spend a $20 at theater for a 2 hour movie, or +$50 for a night out at a bar.

It's something I never understood about gamers, I guess it's all relative to what other games cost, but if you're interested, try it!

Even though I'm poking fun at the "Destiny can hold its own against Star Wars" comments from Bungie...

I really do love the game. I just cant defend against the criticisms. I can say what it does right outweighs what it does wrong for my friends and I.

Haha, yeah it's pretty bad. Can you even turn him down? I went back to an older mission and hes like "Motion ahead - I've got a bad feeling about this!" getting really worked up. I'm thinking 'Oh god, you said this already - shut up!'

It just doesn't feel like a character, just someone reading lines. It sounds silly, but I wonder if a 'cuter' AI assistant character (no, not a Fi) would have lightened the tone a bit. As it is, it's like they tried to appeal to geeks by getting Tyrion to voice a flying cube.

Anyway, I don't like being overly negative and trashing a lot of people's hard (and very talented) work. Not excusing its flaws at all, but I'm gonna focus on the positives now, which is that sweet level/reward gameplay loop that appeals to my addictive OCD side, and hope some DLC fleshes this skeleton out!

Well, the thing is they were going for a 'non-traditional' plot system. They wanted you to read a bunch of stuff out of game. Hence, the huge push for cards and such. The thing is I'm betting the vast majority would have preferred a traditional delivery. Not to mention the fact that you should be able to read all about the cards in game. I'm not going to be bothered to constantly pull up a mobile app or open a browser to read about the lore/cards.

Good example of non-traditional story/lore:

Demon/Dark Souls (even though its mostly lore)

Bad example of that:

Destiny

They tried something different and they werent able to pull it off, not sure why they thought they should stick with it or who thought the way they handled it was a good idea

But if you are looking for Bioshock level of mind bending story.. it is not there.

"Let me artificially put down a scale that favors my opinion to 'inform' you".

Please, not only is the story/narrative rank below the 'why should I care what I'm doing' scale than Halo or Battlefield, but it's not the game's only issue by a long shot.

Edit: Unstructured gameplay and narrative drive are not mutually exclusive. See Dark Souls or even Dead Rising.

When I first heard 'That Wizard Came From The Moon' as a meme, I thought it was a line that stood out as being so bad that it became a meme. But the second I played Destiny, it became apparent that there was nothing unusual about that line. That clunky dialogue, cringeworthy terminology and awful delivery is absolutely standard in the game.

I wish I could say I was shocked... but it's Bungie. Still surprised, considering the money they had, but not shocked.

...

I agree. It's sad that I do, but I do.

But Diablo III is offensive because of how it deals with beloved characters (Deckard Cain) and because they changed the tone of the plot from the grim and atmospheric first two games to "Saturday Morning Cartoon".

This post sums up exactly why so much of the hate is out there. And it's 100% accurate and completely justified, imho. If Bungie released the Beta and was like "Well, this is the full game... with just some more PvP maps and 3 more planets each with one exploration zone... a load of people wouldn't have bought the game. But they would have been honest and i would have respected them for it.

Well personally if you want a great co-op experience I would pick LFD2 over that, but hey, each to their own.

Reviewing on the lower side. Which AAA game will break the 90 barrier first this gen I wonder. I am betting on Bloodborne.

The Witcher 3 releases earlier than that, and Dragon Age: Inquisition may be a huge comeback.

That's also not taking into account the niche stuff that can surprise people like The Evil Within or toss up games like Sunset Overdrive and Driveclub.

Edit: ^Unity and Far Cry 4 are good cases too.

I agree with you from my perspective. In my estimation 95% of the stories in video games are absolute shit. If I want a good story I will read a book. It is too hard to make a game that tells a proper story in this type of format without inundating the player with a bunch of cutscenes that take away from the playing or too scripted/linear to force the player to play out the story that they want to tell. People are barking up the wrong tree if they seriously expect story + online to mesh well. I remember in TOR when they had those story bits in the instances where you could make choices. They seemed cool the first time. Too bad it was some other impatient assholes 10th time running that so they are just going ham on you for not skipping. Same thing happened in FFXIV:ARR. Impatient people calling you every name in the book for wanting to watch a cutscene in a story mission. From what I have observed of online communities the less story the better. Especially a loot grind game. Diablo 3 vanilla to UEE figured this out with the inclusion of adventure mode/rifts. I remember how intrusive the story felt in vanilla when you were doing acts for the 100th time to farm drops.

I don't like the idea of having to wait for the DLC to get the most out of this game.
The DLC will most likely just be more missions of the same type as what we already have in the game (deploy Robo-Dinklage, defend against waves), so I think you mean the sequel.

Hmmm. Far Cry 3 was wildly overrated, so it will be interesting to see if Far Cry 4 actually reviews better than it.

And we're feeling the Ubisoft Open World Burnout even more than ever now, post-Watch_Dogs.
People over scored Farcry 3 and while I do not think it'll happen again, it's a possibility.

Unity is technically impressive and looks to have improved gameplay and stealth. If I had to guess, Unity is going to surprise a lot of people and end up at around a 92 or so, grabbing quite a few GOTY awards.

I'm pretty sure that a flock of birds taking off from the car wrecks in Old Russia is the very first thing you see once you're given control over a new character.
Haha, well I saw this when going back an old mission. Must have missed the initial flock :P I'm only joking about that, really - more because of the birds coming out of the doors when you're first revealed at the tower.
Blaming it on PR is delusional. The game is incredibly flawed in many facets that involve the actual design/programming of the game.
This is true, but it still shows the raw power of a targeted marketing campaign - this game really was treated like the second coming, the hype has been crazy. I've had the most random family members mention it, people that would never even pay gaming any notice. The scale and scope they were suggesting for this game was enormous!

It's so disappointing how much personality this game lacks. I'm half way through the game and I couldn't tell you a single character or enemy by name. Bungie did such a good job with adding personality into Halo. The grunts, elites, and other enemies all had their own memorable personalities. They also did some cool stuff with the Red vs. Blue stuff. All of that set a fun tone to the game. Although, I would say that personality has also been missing from Halo since Halo 3.

I think he nailed the point, though.

- The game is beautiful to look at
- The shooting mechanics are exceptional

And everything else kinda sucks or falls short. That's pretty much Destiny in a nutshell.

Unity's combat still looks really boring. Too many one hit kills and breaking an enemy's block still looks too easy. Everything else looks great. I'm just excited to run around the city with all of the new animations.

Very Solid gunplay, and that is the 80% needed to make an amazing FPS. I think that this game is just a Patch away to be a 9-10 game.

Just imagine this patch notes:

  • PvE:
    1. Added matchmaking in story mode.
    2. Added social features. Now the D-pad is used for:
LEFT: Active your mic for a moment. Everyone close to you will hear what you say.
      UP: EMOTE: Re Group HERE
      DOWN: EMOTE: NEED HELP!
RIGHT: Open submenu for others emotes: Sit. Dance, Wave, point. Vote Ready.
    3. Free roam is now more interesting: Now it will include a Map separated in sections. Every POI will have a special mission that will teach you the lore of the place so any interesting thing in the map will not be missed.
    4. NewGame+. For people looking for challenge. Repeat the mission with added challenges(skulls ;-) ). A real 3 Players challenge. Dead : Mission end.
  • PvP:
    1. Horde mode added.
    2. 12vs12 in bigger maps.

That's true, but the point is that all that stuff was in-place in the Alpha/Beta and a lot of people excused much of it due to what was being said in the PR hype machine.

The fact that some people keep desperately grasping at the next rung of the ladder with 'wait for the raid' 'wait for December's DLC' 'wait for Bungie to patch in clan support and proximity chat' just shows how powerful that marketing can be.

I agree with that. But PR isn't why I'm not liking the game. I barely remember all of the stuff people keep quoting. I would have forgiven the whole "You can go there" lie if the game was actually interesting. I'm just shocked that the people who made Halo made this so lifeless and dull.

Horde mode would be great, but I'd imagine your patch notes being about 4 pages long if they really wanted to fix this game to a 9-10 level.

I can't say for certain either way (of course), but there should be no technical issues preventing Bungie from releasing DLC with more mission types, cutscenes and even levels. I mean, there's no reason why they can't have a huge asteroid fall into a planet, filled to the brim with lore-spewing enemies which you have to capture with a brand new vehicle type.

A man can dream, right?

Oh I see, Diablo 3 was sadly my first Diablo.
