Theres a few other characters, though the characterisation is quite shallow. As for not seeing the city, presumably you mean a city you dont get to walk about in because you see it every time you go to the tower. I agree, and mentioned in a previous comment that the story is lacking a lot of context, quite a lot of it is farmed off to the grimoire. Which is a big mis-step, but then again if they want you to put your groups together outside the game maybe its not so strange they expect you to experience the story there as well ;

I did forget queen I don't care and gothboy what's his name, who are such awesome characters they forgot to actually name them. That's not lacking in characterisation, it's rejecting the pure notion of characterisation. There is no tension, no climax, no resolution, it's just dinkleberry and an endless series of doors. When the angelic choir kicks in during completion of the main quest did you feel anything? Because I sure as hell didn't, In fact, I barely knew what was going on. I had just watched a pile of jello shoot bolts of resurection at statues that transformed into robots and couldn't wrap my head around any of it. And I don't mean walk through the city, but having some notion of what I'm actually fighting for besides a flat texture with lights on it would be nice. Like who lives in the city? We never meet anyone that does, why should I care about those people? I haven't read the grimoire and I don't plan too either, it should have been in the game. Furthermore I don't judge storylines on the basis of extended content because that's a rabbit hole that never ends. What is there is piss poor and is honestly probably the worst AAA showing this generation by far.

Goddamnit. First time playing the new crucible mode and the two fucking retards on my team leave 2 minutes into the game. FFS. >:(

So I'm assuming we'll go back to The Reef at some point. Silly to have it take up space on the planet select screen for that one shitty cutscene.

I know this problem, soon as I played Salvage, I had a hard time winning this...
This is no good with random players.
Btw, anyone Interested in the Nightly Strike?
I could use some help with this.

What? Why? That just breaks the immersion and makes the lore feel like an afterthought. I don't mind reading video game lore through books. But on a website and phone app? Odd.

I hope they someday put just a library in the tower some day but I actually appreciate it being in the app, so I can stay connected somewhat to this world while I'm stuck not playing.

But I feel like even if it was in game, I'd still be doing that instead playing it in the limited time I have to sit down with my XBO. This way going through all the extensive lore doesn't necessarily eat into my gaming time.

But it should at least be available in game for those with Jesse Pinkman flip phones or whatever.

What's the nightly strike? Is it for lvl 20+ characters? If so, I'm in after 530 EST on PS4.

sucks i have to grind so much for decent gear in pvp. shit is so unbalanced.

classic FPS crowd, i see (you, not them)

I think some of the races are more involved than others, based off the codex information.
Like the Cabal come off as opportunistic and expansive, perhaps attracted to the Sol system in the aftermath of the collapse.

The Fallen are referred to having once been a much greater society than the pirates and scavengers they are now - they could be the remnants of a civilization that met the same fate as Humanity once.

The Hive has been mentioned as Humanity's 'ancient foe' and might be closer related to the events of the collapse than the others. Although ancient foe could also just be a reference to the fact that they are quite literally, ancient undead beings.

The Vex seem to worship the darkness, (geth anyone?) and in the final moments of the game we come face to face with what seems to be the Darkness or a portion of it; assuming direct control over Vex Gate Lords. The Vex are referenced as being quite old and also from the future, apparently having some command over time-travel. This leads me to believe they stumbled across the Darkness after the collapse, and began to revere and serve it, using their control of time to unravel the secrets of the bygone eras, rather than being minions of darkness during the collapse.

All I get from this is that all the races(including the darkness itself as a reaper paralell) tried to copy Mass Effect, except failed badly at doing so.

The Halo games narratives were generally terrible, and were laid upon an amazingly derrivative foundation. Destiny's is neither categorically nor an order of magntiude worse and certainly it floats around the average mark for a videogame story (which is a very low mark). If your point needs to be supported by blatant fabrication (there are characters, they are arguably cipheres, but theyre there non the less) then maybe it isnt worth making?

The Halo games narratives were nothing to write home about, they're the true average video game story. They were functional in that they told you just enough to let you know exactly why you're at war with the covenant, why you need to do this objective, who this and this character is and what their personalities are. The plot for the most part was coherent and made sense in context.

Destiny drops you into someplace in Russia with no explaination on how you got there beyond the ghost saying "Oh, hey, I just revived you. You're going to see a lot of things you don't understand. I won't explain them, but trust me bro."

The cutscenes are random nonsensical sci-fantasy drivel about how you have to kill knights to open the way to some grave for reasons. At no point in Destiny's story does it feel you actually have a purpose, beyond dicking around in the universe and being told what to do(but not why, beyond the "Save the traveler" line) by the handful of NPCs that take the time to talk to you.

Most video game stories are on par with Halo. Destiny is so far below that you can barely call it a story as such.

Having them on the map is cool, but I really do think grimoire cards should be in-game and think it was a huge mistake to relegate them to the app.

Being shallow or ciphers makes them arguably poor characters, it doesnt magically make them not characters.

Hmm... I suppose you're right. Still, the level of shallowness on display far surpasses the average video game character. It's still something they do much, much worse than other games.

I need to stay out of the review thread... It's making me feel bad for enjoying the game a lot. D:

Yeah, I didn't bother to post there at all. Honestly, Destiny is like the shooter that I've been waiting for. I love the mechanics, I don't get bothered by the story at all (hell, I play Cod and Battlefield single players so I'm obviously not picky), and I love the upgrade loot mechanics and strikes. PvP is even fun though I'm not great at it. I really just don't get the hate for this game or even the "meh" attitude. I'm having a freaking blast.

I'm enjoying the game myself but it's mostly coming from pvp and strikes. The sp campaign missions boil down to protecting Ghost 90 percent of the time. It's terrible. I'm going to try and finish Mars tonight and then never touch those missions again.

On the subject of NPC's, why not have them out on the planets? Why not have more smaller social hubs or something? Anything to give the game some more personality.

This game is absolutely fantastic, having a blast playing with friends, exploring, fighting, and getting new gear.

Kind of perplexed by the reviews thus far.

Strikes are definitely my favorite part of the game, though I must admit I have a strong affinity for some of the campaign missions...

I wish there were an easy way to navigate during patrol. Trying to find places sucks.

Yeah, they need an in-game map. Spent 15 minutes the other day trying to find my way to the Iron Line on Mars to get a gold chest (and then 30 minutes trying to jump to a dead ghost we spotted, but that was actually pretty fun :) )

What is the best noise canceling microphone for ps4? I have a really expensive 5.1 setup that I wanna use for speakers but it's giving too much background noise into my vita mic.

Saying the story is "bad" implies it actually exists. What's there in Destiny is so bare bones it doesn't even make sense to call it bad. It's not even there.

I just want the ability to turn off the cutscenes. I've seen them all once now, I don't need to experience them on character #2.

That being said, I thought the single player was fine / pretty fun, but I couldn't tell you what the story really was. I ran a bunch of places and hit square and then the ghost did things and talked.

I killed all the enemies I found.

I've realized that people were going to shit on this game from the second I played the Beta. There is a lot of time investment involved in it, and if you don't care to take the time to grind and get the good loot, you aren't getting anything out of this game.

I've purposely stayed away from any coverage of this game. I'm playing the hell out of and enjoying it, and that's the end of that.

Just got a strange coin in PvP. :-)

Edit : I just came across someone who appears to have light at level 11. Is that possible?
