Destiny - Review Thread

The core shooting and gunplay is great, almost perfect even. The problem is that the combat gameplay It isn't even as varied of an experience as Halo CE.

The worlds are beautiful but devoid of interactivity.

Really, who builds something as vast and gorgeous as the moon environment and them puts only 5 or 6 story missions on it? I think 3 of those missions leverage the same location! What is the point of building these gorgeous moon bases and not using them for anything.

Gross shipped is not even remotely close or any way resembling net profit. The messaging people quoted in that 500M shipped thread also strongly implied Activisions typical retail contracts involve them taking the lead on distribution levels. Not that that is required for the first statement to be true, but it makes the gross shipped figure an even sillier number to cite.

I mean, we all know the game made money and it's not like numbers have been released yet, so I'm just going to stick with the amount of copies that were sent to retailers

Anyways though, no way in hell this game is being re-built

In a way I'm not surprised by the low scores because I could sort of see the shortcomings after the beta, and I even canceled my pre-order after giving it some thought (though somebody else ended up purchasing the game for me). Though on the other hand I think the formula of the game, as repetitive as it is, is actually quite addicting and fun. The fact that the quest for loot can drive me to keep happily repeating the same quest over and over again puts the game as at least an 8/10 for me. I haven't reached endgame yet, but my whole motivation moving forward is endgame PVP, so my final thoughts on the game will depend on how enjoyable that is for me.

I think this is a game, like Diablo 3, where a lot of the biggest problems can be fixed in an expansion. For one thing I fully expect the missions in the first expansion to have some variety in them (unless of course they're already too far in development of the damn thing). That said, I'm glad I decided to hold off on the season pass for now.

My very brief bullet point thoughts. I am still level 14 and unfinished.

0) the game is very pretty on PS4, not the best graphics on PS4 but Looks great.

1). I love the story and the missions. It is a lot of fun to join up with other gamers and take on the fallen. The gunplay is fantastic. And the enemy has good AI.

2) The Crucible PvP is awful only because it is not balanced. I hate that because I don't have as much time to power grind as other people and then I am at a sometimes severe disadvantage. It's not fun, but it could be if it felt like a fair fight.

3) I am not a fan of huge bullet sponge bosses in FPS games. Not sure why Bungie would introduce so many of them.

4) I don't like that I have to take time off from the main story to power grind to raise my level. It just feels strange. I wish they could include a few difficulty levels so that you can finish the story missions without taking time off to power level... I don't like that aspect and it contradicts what Bungie said about the game before it can out.

5)?Generally I really like the game, sometimes even more than Halo, but it could use a lot of fine tuning and maybe more...

Glad that a lot of reviews are talking about how great the score is, they really made a huge mistake in letting Marty go.

The music was one of the few redeeming qualities of the game I felt. I agree, it was a dumb move.

After playing to level 13, I would give this game a solid 7.

Pros.

-Great mechanics
-Top tier graphics
-Good Sound
-Great UI
-Solid infrastructure

Cons

- Horrible writing
-Monotanous pace at times
-Poor mission design
-Occasional dumb AI
-Bullet sponge bosses
-Boring loot and armor
-Pedestrian PVP

Haha, now I don't feel so bad about giving up at level 12-ish, once I made it to Venus, I just couldn't stand it anymore.

I'm pretty glad I cancelled my preorder at this point. I realized I shouldn't spend a ton of money on the game and I didn't have much free time to play it right now anyway.

Now I'm not sure if I'll ever get it.

If this is getting terrible reviews, how bad are the reviews of order 1886 going to be...
:(
At this point, I'm waiting for Bungie to issue an apology for Destiny.

So are we going to get "Destiny: A galaxy reborn" next year?

This game hurt me. I can't trust AAA gaming anymore. Why Destiny? I was going to log over 500 hours in you.

Yeah, I'm just really dissapointed that Destiny turned out to be like this.

For a moment I was really sure this would be the FPS to define this console generation just like Gears of War defined cover based shooters or COD defined military shooters last gen

-Dumb or half baked implementation of social features (no story match making, no sense of chat or community, other players randomly vanish, false sense of open world)
-They force you to watch cut scenes when they are not even remotely interesting
-Some bland planet design
-Characters are not even remotely interesting

You say a solid 7

But what you describe sounds more like a 6

Destiny has strong foundations (except for the story). It might pull everything together properly one day with expansions or patches, sort of the way Diablo III righted itself with RoS and Patch 2.1 (righted itself compared to launch, anyway).

I don't think there's any fixing the story though. They take themselves way too seriously for having elements like light-absorbing swords that are literal swords and shit and not just being figurative. The only way the story can be fixed is if the franchise goes the Saints Row route and becomes a self-aware parody.

Sounds like Halo!

so is it fair to say that a lot of guys that made Halo awesome are now at 343 studios?

Based on what?

I would think that criticizing the AI would be the very last thing on anyone's mind.

Wasn't Bungie supposed to be THE developer that "revolutionized" AI in a FPS? I'm certainly noticing some of their strengths with enemy AI in this game.

I could be wrong about this, but I've seen enemies take cover, fall back, advance in numbers, take to higher ground, etc.

Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

I like the game but I do feel it's an overall very shallow experience. There's just not much content here to keep you going for the long term. I guess I'm not all that worried about review scores because Bungie has built a solid foundation here, and I think they will improve the game over time and eventually get things tuned up properly (similarly to how Diablo 3 was received at release compared to now with RoS). Some things can't be fixed with patches, but I feel like the sequel will be the game people were originally hoping for with this one. Having the game on 360/PS3 also no doubt held them back, so a truly next gen Destiny will be great.

QA did a great job, actual gameplay is super polished. The only real glitch I came across playing it was the zone-engage AI and that might've been intentional.

-the audio glitch from the beta is still in the game. sound will cut out randomly
-there's still hit detection lag in PvP
-AI occasionally randomly despawn during strikes, or they'll gtlich and be unnkillable
-inventory menu is notoriously laggy
-there are some missing animations
-probably the PS4's fault more than bungie's, but the share menu stays up too long. often times i'm able to move around in the game while the share menu's blank blue screen is still up
-also on the PSN side, the notifications cover the motion tracker for 5 seconds. this is really annoying.

gameplay is otherwise polished, but these issues bug me consistently. would have expected them to be fixed from the beta since they aren't major bugs

Game is great...needs to buff SP and 2-player co-op though, everyone is not a fan of PvP (even if it's really fun) and it would be nice to not get penalized for it. Too much stuff is tied into PvP, and I don't get rewarded enough for doing hard missions by my lonesome.

Maybe because I don't player many shooters, I'm more forgiving...Game is a solid 8/10 for me...and if story missions and more content is added, could easily go up.

Copying over my opinions from the other thread --

After finishing the main scope of the game and hitting 20+1 -- Am a bit disappoint with the content. Especially that shitty second half of the story and all the bosses being bullet sponges.

PvP is still a blast, and there's the raids and strikes to look forward to still.

I just wish there was more to do. There's no real point to go back to to anyplace but mars for patrols unless I want to help friends, outside of the strikes.

I don't regret buying the bundle and got a good time and a decent amount of hours out of it, but fuck. They could have easily done a lot more.

Feeling like the DLC and patches will help a good deal over time.

Bysummer or fall next year the updates will fix some of the issues probably, so you should get it at some point.

Maybe. It holds my attention at least.

You're thinking of Monolith.

Who happens to have a game coming out later this month! Not an FPS, though.

So, I got to the post-game, post-level 20, and that was enough. It becomes incredibly grindy expecting you to replay over and over that same stuff you just replayed over and over.

It really is amazing at times. But by the end there was no way I could play it anymore. Maybe a year from now the game will be more fleshed out or 'expanded' and I might come back to it then.

Played around 20hrs

I don't know who "we" is. I disagree with you and them.

The $500million figure for Destiny, not the series but Destiny as in Destiny 1, has been verified by multiple sources. This reuters article has Kotick stating it and then a spokesperson verifying that figure was correct when apparently asked for verification: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/06/us-activision-destiny-idUSBREA4501F20140506?feedType=RSS The one comment some people on gaf latched onto was Bungie stating that their development budget was nowhere near $500million which is obvious. That figure includes marketing and other costs.

That would, as per the article, be 15 to 16million copies sold to break even. Of course that figure is not especially correct as it's not factoring in DLC and whatever microtransactions are introduced as well as higher retail prices outside the US of which Activision presumably receives a larger cut per sale from. In any case it's going to be a lot of sold copies required just to break even.

Wait, so that wasn't part of the praise for Bungie's Halo entries??

Edit: Just saw Shinobi chime in. Okay. I was under the impression that Halo AI was part of that whole "god-tier" franchise thing.

I'm actually a little surprised in how much I am enjoying this game. I tried out the Beta on PS4 and was a little disappointed in how much like an MMO the missions were. Now after I reluctantly purchased it on the XB1 ( didn't want to renew my PS+ yet), I strangely find myself enjoying the game. Maybe it is because I am not binge playing it. 20 hours of play in 2-3 days would push me over the edge on most games. I'm sitting at level 7 or 8 currently and am spreading out my play time (kids make it hard to play for very long).

Well that is the same argument for earth. Who gives you the ability to go to Earth, but then limits you to one small section is Russia? It is just mind numbing that the only location on Earth is Russia. Like the Moon, they use such a small slice of the space available.

While I understand, the could not re-create the entire planet of earth, but at least give players 2-3 unique locations on Earth to explore and have Story missions. That is probably the reason perhaps the game is rubbing people off is that the beta pretty much contained about 1/4th of the single player story, which is absurd.

I am still enjoying the game and doing the missions are fun that you find throughout the land, but I would of loved just one more areas per planet for Story missions.

Do we know how the DLC is going to be for this game?

Is it even possible to rework the way the loot works, or add a serious amount of new enemies/designs to get it to where it needs to be? And how pissed are people going to be to have to buy DLC to do that?

And didnt Diablo have the chance to screw up on PC and make up for it on consoles?
Even so, the PC fans/the Diablo fanbase seem like they would stick through the game. Diablo seems revitalized because it wasn't on consoles before the issue, and the console version is different enough (local co-op) to have revitalized the game to balance both PC and console fanbases.

Does Destiny have the time to do that, or the same opportunity? On consoles, new games are going to overtake Destiny, and the motivation to improve the game seems pointless when they can just make a sequel.

Re-releasing it isn't possible. You only have to make a GOTY Edition in about a year, but there is no "new audience" like there was with Diablo on consoles, right?

Seems like there are some fundamental issues with NPCs, loot, story, mission design, and enemy variety... sure DLC can change all that, but it seems crappy to make people buy DLC.

Was Diablo's revamping tough or what? I imagine it was pretty impressive since impressions turned around quite well for that game. cant imagine that's an easy task.

Ask yourself this question folks. You'll know, in your heart, whether or not your are failing at this whole "gamer thing".

yeah..

If the game is something you've awaited for years and cared about, then its important to judge the game based on experience.

This goes for any game really.

I think it's obvious that since there's no monthly fee they are going to build out these planets with paid DLC.

How do you guys think the playerbase is going to be on PS4? Is the community going to drop off hard out of disappointment, or is this going to have a strong following for a long time to come? When it comes around to deciding on whether or not to purchase expansion content, I'm definitely going to be factoring in how many folks I'm going to be able to play with .

This is one of those games, for me, that no reviewer seems to be representing my experience quite right. Most games have a review that clearly articulates my own feelings, but not with Destiny yet. This is a great game that has been so bloody memorable and I've already spent 15 or so hours in game. My friends and I also already have inside stories and jokes from our extensive time together. I've never quite played a game like this with my console friends before and my mates all agree that this has been fantastic. I really hope these reviews don't dissuade people from supporting the franchise. I would hate to miss out on more of this world just to get more trite modern/near future warfare shite.

Bungie titles are usually brimming with content. For the amount of money and time that went into this thing, I am surprised by the outcome.

Don't think it will impact the sales though.

Have any of the reviews mentioned an update after the Raid is open on Tuesday?

Polygon said they would update their review if they felt it made a difference

I think it would take an overhaul of the game, similar to Diablo 3 to make any difference, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, but would take quite the time and effort

It's all just guesswork at this point, but I think there is going to be a pretty steep decline after the first raid
