So what happened to rap?

Are rap songs only limited to bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty, niggas, breasts, drugs, guns? Literally that's all I hear when it comes to rap. Can't anyone write anything that makes some sense? At least tell some story with emotions rather than bs that we keep hearing.
I don't get people who make these comment about rap music. Gangsta rap (offshoot of rap) was popular in the 90's and has since gone mostly underground. What rap music are you listening to that still has lyrics about "gats" and offing people?

And rock stars just talk about how shitty it is that a woman left them.

I also agree with the posters that are recommending Macklemore. Truly a prophet for the ages.

It was destined to happen. There was never an artistic guiding hand behind the genre. No passionate goal in a lot of these artists heads. Why does Lil Wayne rap? Money and bitches. Why does Dipset rap? Money and bitches. Why does Nicki Minaj rap? Money.

The legacy of other genres is pure art and competition. Led Zeppelin wanted to be the best. The Beatles wanted to create and innovate. Bands like Sonic Youth and Pink Floyd desperately wanted to experiment with the core ideas of their genre. Where is that exploratory spirit in rap? I'd say gone, but it was never there.

Truth be told rap is a novelty born from simple people killing time at get togethers. The sooner people stop expecting 'art' from it the sooner it can fade into obscurity as it has long deserved. All it exists to do now is amplify the violence, destruction, and misery of a community too blinded by low expectations to want better. And yes I do mean the black community, the people modern rap is designed for.

With Lamar and Cole's last albums you don't have to care about other artists for months.

Cole's album gave me narcolepsy.

Drill music is pretty much that.

As long as the beats are good I don't care about the content for the most part. I actually care way less for 'conscious rap' than most people. Get that corny sob story out of my face and rap about the streets pls.

And if you're going to rap about violence at least go overboard and do it tommy wright iii et al. style.

None of this shit rhymed.

Huh? Eminem has no issues with gay people. He's really close friends with Elton John. He has gone on record saying that e uses the term "faggot" and "gay" as a way to offend people, and not to actually imply that he cares about any mans sexual orientation.

Also,
Being homophobic doesn't make you a criminal. Eminem has also gone on record saying that he puts on a criminal persona to appease the rap audience he draws.

He means the song Criminal.

That like someone using the n word (the one with the er) and claiming they are not a racist.

I agree with you OP.

I hate when I am just relaxing on my lawn, and I see these rap cars roll by my house playing the rap music you mentioned.

.I was at a club the other day and this big booty women asked me to dance, so being the nice upstanding gentleman that I am I had to oblige. However, when they played a fast song she turned around and started grinding on my johnson, and I had to stop her at once and inform her that I don't indulge in any rap shenanigans.

The second most popular genre in the US fading into obscurity? Good luck getting those affluent white kids from consuming the ever loving mess out of it.

Kanye West and Macklemore.
Power and Same Love by the respective artists.
Macklemore has other sings that deal with other issues too. Wings for example, talks about consumerism and Neon Cathedral is about alcoholism.
Give em a listen OP, I don't really like rap myself but these two artists are really good.

Sighs....I just don't even.

Why some people think hip hop is shit nowadays while holding dearly to the 90s like rappers weren't saying the same shit during that time. Nowadays you have sub genres within hip hop which is a blessing compared to back in the day when it was kind of limited. You have rappers talking about revolution, swag, taking vacations, traveling to mars, and even rapping about video games. It's just listeners that express such typical accusations are too lazy to find quality hip hop from what the radio and tv portrays,

The same folks that hype up biggie smalls forget he had a song where he robbed pregnant women. The same folks that are die hard 2pac fans forgot his shenanigans just to sell records (dissing rappers left and right for profit). Hell even the most fan friendly rappers like A Tribe Called Quest had songs about fucking women (Electric Relaxation).

Bottom line this whole hip hop is saying the same shit argument is rather sad when there's more artists out there that are saying another story...the question is will you take the time to search for quality hip hop like you would with your most favorite genre...or are you going to downplay it because "lolz rappers are saying the same thing over and over"?

His last few albums have been meh, but Lupe Fiasco used to have some of the most "message"/"story"/"meaningful" songs out there. He is sometimes a little bit on the nose, but it is what it is

"little weapon" about child soldiers

Then you have huge rappers like Jay Z and Kanye making songs about how bad the diamond trade is, and how the culture of lusting after fancy jewelry is bad

plenty of meaningful rap out there.

The more white rappers we get talking about: bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty, and drugs the sooner we can get rid of the horrible rap talking about bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty and drugs.

This is why I only listen to artists like G-Easy, Iggy, Mackelmore and Aesop Rockers.

It's depressing how much rap exists, but people still write off the whole genre other than the few people they've heard. The bolded part are topics that exist on just about every "conscious rap" album.

This thread just gave birth to the new "I'm an expert" meme.
