There are plenty of other examples that can be used to prove that rap isn't all bullshit.

if you know the term country music, you can probably guess that it's not just a pseudonym for an artist

Of course, but my point is that if all you heard was the garth brooks chart style shit, you could be forgiven for thinking there was no more on offer there. Different artists, sure, but all the same shit. Same for any popular artform.

You have to know something exists before you can look for it, generally.

and I think it's almost impossible to do that if you're listening to it on the internet and are even a little curious about it

then again, maybe I'm rare in that if I think about, or want to know about, something the first thing I do is look it up

:) I think that is actually pretty rare lol. It certainly seems it with some of the stuff that people seem not to know these days. But a lot of people still only get exposed to music via mainstream radio I think, they just don't know to look elsewhere. It's a problem of them not knowing that other sources are out there, or not knowing how to investigate. It happens in all sorts of fields. People say 'all x is shit' when they mean 'most popular x is shit' because they don't realise how much there is they haven't been exposed to.

With all that said, it is irritating to me how shit all the mainstream rap is. I really like some of the lesser known (at least to people like me who don't really follow the genre closely) stuff, but it's problematic to me that the over riding experience from popular music is so small and petty, just women and money and insults.

Same shit. People stay forgetting that this same thing was going on in the 90's and 80's and it was at the forefront of rap then too. There is still a lot of diversity in rap you just gotta look for it mane.

All genres have great lesser known and independent artists including rap

But I think rap easily has the best pop presence. Chart-topping rap >>>>> pop or rock chart songs

I think rap is better now than the nonsense of the early 2000s. It'll never hit 90's era hip hop level for me, but that was just an amazing time to be a hip hop fan.

It became CRap

You just have to look for stuff that you're into nowadays and honestly, it's not that hard to do with the internet

None of those things are inherently bad. They've been a part of the genre forever. Try listening to a wider variety of rappers if you want a wider variety of subject matter.

I am mainly talking about the mainstream songs.

Kendrick is spitting some of the realest shit in rap right now and he's also chart-toppingly popular. Not to mention Kanye too. OP are you even looking or are you just seeing black dudes speaking with a weird voice and then using that as the basis of your dismissal of the entire genre?

Seems like this topic comes up every month or so on here.

There's a lot of great stuff that doesn't cover the subject matter you're unhappy with, it just so happens that it's often not on the radio.

I don't get people who make these comment about rap music. Gangsta rap (offshoot of rap) was popular in the 90's and has since gone mostly underground. What rap music are you listening to that still has lyrics about "gats" and offing people?

Is the OP's post straight out of 2004? Mainstream rap today is about wearing tight jeans and rapping about girlfriend shit

I would rather listen to Imagine Dragons or even maroon 5 then the crap rap songs being put by Lil Wayne, imSU and others.

Imagine Dragons is awesome, so that's not too surprising.

Maroon 5 songs are really fun to sing at Noraebangs. Korean people love them for some reason.

Ignoring all the whack shit that surrounds them and their whacky fans, I dig a lot of Insane Clown Posse's lyrics and I love Violent J's voice and delivery. My favourite rap albums though are the Wu-Tang albums of the nineties.

You're basing this off rap cars aren't you? I can't stand the co-signature of drowsy, slurred word rappers like Future, Lil B, Yung Lean, etc. I can't understand that shit.

Well these two posts will keep me busy for a while, cheers :)

OP, lemme take a break for my post-hire job training to tell you what it is about you and your little thread here:

You don't want to discover good Hip-Hop.

I see shit like this all the time. People like you come up in here, saying shit like "OMG, why is rap all samey???" Meanwhile, while you're typing up whatever nonsense response to people who are posting examples of good Hip-Hop, you're probably at home bumping the latest recorded pillow talk from Taylor Swift, or whatever Mike Will Made It-produced track that Miley decided to bless.

But the truth is, you don't want to find good rap. You already have your mind made up. In your head, rap is nothing but terrible non-music, made by untalented people. Any examples to the contrary are gonna go in one ear, and out the other.

So, while I could humor you, and explore the actual musical side Hip-Hop, or touch on the songwriting aspects of rap, or explain the realities that inspire every rap lyric you hear (even the misogynistic, materialistic ones), I'm not gonna do that, as it would be pointless to do so.

You already have your mind made up...

Are rap songs only limited to bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty, niggas, breasts, drugs, guns? Literally that's all I hear when it comes to rap. Can't anyone write anything that makes some sense? At least tell some story with emotions rather than bs that we keep hearing.
You should be asking what happened to your thread making privileges.

With your ignorant ass.
