Isn't it a bit like most genres? It's fairly cheap to produce stuff and get it out, which means there's even more shit than ever, but also a lot of great stuff if you dig a little deeper.

I love a smooth verse about just about anything. I really don't care that much what the rap I'm listening to is about. It goes both ways; I'm not that impressed just because a rapper attempts to write a song about something other than being awesome or rich or fucking girls or whatever. If you can do it well I'm impressed, but it has to be an on point flow for me to want to listen to it. But write a smooth rap about fucking bitches and I might just want to listen to that just as much.

A lot of try hard crap out there.. people kidding themselves that any of it is that deep too.

Damn, he just got Zoned.

I stumbled across my old Funkmaster Flex Mix Vol 1 this evening. It's amazing, eternal, and hilarious.

**Crazy for you Mister Deee Jaaaaayyy**

damn.

welp time for some good music. Turns on radio.

"Versace, Versace, Versace, Versace
Versace, Versace, Versace, Versace
Versace, Versace Versace, Versace Versace
Versace, Versace Versace, Versace Versace"

Off of the top of my head, Lupe Fiasco (before he made Lazers), some of J. Cole's songs (like Lost Ones), Krizz Kaliko if you want something really different.

Kind of counterintuitive but Tyler, The Creator. He raps about and says terrible shit in songs (although he's moving away from that), but he's lyrically amazing and his tracks have some of the best rap instrumentals I've heard in a while. I don't think I can link the song but I've had Sarah on repeat for the last couple of weeks.

Omg hahaha.

I don't see the problem with rap that is for dancing, or rap that is to played at loud volumes with disregard for your surrounding neighborhood. It's no different from the more shallow rock music that is meant to move your body. It's fun. Now there is a difference between well made "pop rap" or "trap" (just examples) for sure. Can't imagine writing off Ferg's "Let It Go" or Schoolboy Q's "Druggie Wit Hoes" for example, cause it's not "intellectually" written. I used to be like that too though.

I've been listening to Invincible's ShapeShifters lately. Just about the entire album talks about subjects other than the stuff the OP lists. Plus, she's a pretty damn good lyricist, up there with the better female rappers out there.

I want to know what happened to all the "conscious"/backpacker hiphop that was big at the turn of the 21st century. People were loving that, then all of a sudden it suffered a hideous backlash. I'm not a huge hiphop guy so I always wondered why did the zeitgeist change so (what seemed to me) suddenly?

People realized that a lot of those dudes were fake deep and/or made corny music.

It's definitely still around.

Thanks for the Big KRIT and Isaiah Rashad suggestions GAF, been listening to Kendrick's First 2 Mixtapes/Albums and GKMC, too lazy to look around for other shit.

TDE is great overall though, ton of great artists to look into.

It was destined to happen. There was never an artistic guiding hand behind the genre. No passionate goal in a lot of these artists heads. Why does Lil Wayne rap? Money and bitches. Why does Dipset rap? Money and bitches. Why does Nicki Minaj rap? Money.

The legacy of other genres is pure art and competition. Led Zeppelin wanted to be the best. The Beatles wanted to create and innovate. Bands like Sonic Youth and Pink Floyd desperately wanted to experiment with the core ideas of their genre. Where is that exploratory spirit in rap? I'd say gone, but it was never there.

Truth be told rap is a novelty born from simple people killing time at get togethers. The sooner people stop expecting 'art' from it the sooner it can fade into obscurity as it has long deserved. All it exists to do now is amplify the violence, destruction, and misery of a community too blinded by low expectations to want better. And yes I do mean the black community, the people modern rap is designed for.

I assume you're trolling but can't almost all music likely be traced back to this?

I think the bigger issue is that they were all able to make 1, maybe 2 albums that were good, but after that they didn't really know what to write about. If you invest everything you've gone through, and everything you love and hate into your first major album, everything else is going to be forced and painfully mediocre.

I'd say Kid Cudi is a pretty solid example. His mix tapes were amazing, his first album was still really good, but by his second album he started to just drag, and I don't even know if he made any more after that. Other than him honestly, most of the other artists in that genre were pretty underground to begin with. I mean, I guess there were people like Mac Miller who somehow fooled people for a year or so into thinking he was a great, but he came and went pretty fast.

A lot of those underground "deep" rappers also changed their style a lot for some reason. An example that kinda hit me was P.O.S. Never Better was phenomenal, but his follow-up (We Don't Even Live Here) shot way off in a crazy direction and just lacked the depth of his previous albums.

Are rap songs only limited to bitches, fucking, ass, twerk, booty, niggas, breasts, drugs, guns? Literally that's all I hear when it comes to rap. Can't anyone write anything that makes some sense? At least tell some story with emotions rather than bs that we keep hearing.

This is like saying all rock is teenage angst and 2edgy4me rebellion. You can't dismiss an entire genre or you might miss out on a few songs that you may love.

Why is rap seen as homogenous? It's like the musical equivelant of whiteness theory. Rappers are collectively responsible for the whole genre 'for some reason'.
