PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | September 2014

Having recently completed [and loved] both Velocity 2X and Rogue Legacy. Looking for a new game to play on the handheld. Been waiting to check out the reviews for Murasaki Baby as it looked to have potential but unfortunately they have been quite average,
Having a look at Steamworld Dig instead, wondered if anyone has played it and can advise if worth playing.
Looks like I can recently missed out on a discount [EU] for the game which is a shame.

Also checked out Swapper but looks like the puzzles are going to be too difficult [for example I found the latter stages of Limbo really hard].

They're an acquired taste, but for that price you can't go wrong. The second game is great, but the first one is a classic in my mind. It's got this genuinely eerie ambiance about it that no other game has replicated. Not a scary game so much, just very creepy despite (or maybe because of) the cartoonish art style.

Just be prepared for some trial and error gameplay. Both of them can be very trying at times.

Thanks for the impressions.

I guess I'll be skipping MHFU then.

Any impressions on Stealh Inc.?

Pretty fun, gets hard after a couple worlds. It is a puzzle game with stealth elements, not the other way around. Good music though, and puzzle solving is fairly satisfying. I wasn't super enthralled either, got it PS+, not sure I would have paid but I wasn't really looking for more puzzles at the time either.

You can skip levels and there's replayability with different abilities on each level.

Steamworld dig is an excellent little game . its a mix between an old SNES game and something megamanish( platform wise) you should buy this but take into account the game is a short experience of 5 hours . addictive but short.

Isn't Maverick Hunter X on sale? I highly recommend that if you like any sort of quality, technical platforming.

Swapper is fun but...if you found Limbo hard I'm not sure what to tell you. You might die a few times trying, but I can't think of anything I'd say was really hard in Limbo, meanwhile a handful of late Swapper puzzles really threw me through a loop. Amazing atmosphere in that game though, I really love it more than the puzzles even.

I'm almost shocked at how good looks castlevania Dracula x chronicles on vita. I mean . the intro feels like a native vita game. Everyone should buy this. I'm actually very surprised.

You and I seem to have very different definitions of average.

Steamworld Dig is worth every cent btw.

Oh yes. Swapper gets very tough, no doubt about it. Great game though (hopefully I can finish it someday).

Stealth Inc. sounds nice, but I guess I'll skip that too, since I'm not that interested in puzzles ATM

So I'll be getting three PS1 TR, and Maverick Hunter X. I need another PSN card.

Extremely unusual games tend to end up at an "average" 7, see also Octodad. I'd hardly call Dadliest Catch perfect either, but I'm pretty sure the unusual nature of it has more to do with score than presentation and such. Part of why I rarely read reviews for "weird stuff", unless there's something incredibly bad like bugs, it's literally 15 minutes long or something, critics often don't have much interesting to say about such curve-ball experiences and just toss a 7 at it.

I should probably play Steamworld Dig. It's one of those "I forget why I have this on steam" games

Yeah, ultimately, I don't really care about the reviews, anyway. For example, all the ones saying that it's "too short" disqualify themselves from the get go. I have yet to play a video game that is too short. I base my purchasing decisions on my instinct/experience and open mind and sometimes GAF impressions.

Also, unless MB's touch controls are completely broken, I found it surprising that some people struggled with them. Not what I would expect in 2014. I guess I'll be able to verify it tomorrow.

Well, I played an $8 game that was 15 minutes--got a review code so I'm not mad or anything, but that's probably about the only game I've played I'd say was actually too short for buy-in. But yeah generally I'll prefer a short consistently good game to something long due to poor pacing. Makes RPGs hard, and I generally avoid asscreed collectathons for that reason too.

do people really like armored core

Metal Wolf Chaos breh

Well, now I'm curious. Which game was that? :p

Stranded (video playthrough of mine). To be fair, it's more like a half hour the first time, but it's mostly due to bumbling around and the frustrating pace your character moves at.

It's essentially a point and click adventure with all of four relevant points of interaction, few but interesting passive bits of backstory, good pixelart and music. It's a neat little experience, but I find it hard to recommend at the same time and suspect if I hadn't gotten it free my opinion would be lower (this is part of why I always disclose when I've gotten a review copy at the start of the vid)

Oh, Stranded. That's totally on my wishlist. Sounds like length is not what you take issue with primarily, though, haha.

What a splendid video!

Wait that game was BLAH.

Poor review code waste.

Well, length of meaningful content moreso than actual time to completion. It's an interesting experiment in minimalism but falls a bit short due to that as well. I appreciate the idea but I've also played plenty of short Flash games that silently (or with somewhat minimal text) build a world better.

Not using flash as an insult--a lot of content on my YT channel has been avant-garde or simply random flash games, partially because they fit the experimental mold a bit better than a $5-$10 Steam game does. Though Home and They Breathe work quite well IMO (closer to $3 each I believe). I try not to do too much "dollar per fun" or "dollar per hour" judgement though

Yup. Sucks that the sequel is a turn-based game :/

BTW, any clues on what could be the two "well-received, already released elsewhere indie games coming to PS4 on oct 1st and free with plus"?

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Totally valid point, of course.

I think it's exemplary. Can't wait for it.

What??????? Tell me you are joking. The platforming of the game and sense of progression ala megaman its the best parte of it

Not sure if you guys are aware, but Steamworld is an IP of it's own and Dig isn't even the first title. This is the 3rd game, all different genres. First was a tower defense game (that no one has heard of). Dig will probably get a "proper" sequel due to it's success, but Heist was probably in planning since before Dig became a multiplat success. I'm sure the plan was always to experiment in genres because how else do you go from tower defense to metroidvania.

Well I just finished Danganronpa. I.....um....so.....um....yeah....um...alrighty then. That's a lot of unanswered questions. Goddamnit. That ending is tempting me to just go ahead and get the sequel now, but I have this thing about not liking paying £35 for handheld games. I may or may not make an exception. Depends on how long this eats at me for. God this game was awesome! Crappy minigames aside of course.

I'm conflicted, since these are all the sale games I want right now;

Mousecraft (Cross-buy ) PS+; $7.34
Murdered: Soul Suspect - PS+; $19.99
The Swapper (cross-buy) PS+;$12.79
Thief - PS+; $17.99
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - PS+; $17.99

and my PSN wallet can't handle all of them :/

Let me save you 18 bucks. :p

I'd also expect Murdered to be even cheaper (or even free as part of PS+) in a couple of months.

Is it me or is PSN slow as shit? My games are chugging along and some are passing forth the bandwith to others, leaving me with incomplete downloads overall. When I downloaded Murasaki Baby this morning I had no problems.

For the love of God don't buy Thief.

I'd say it's worth it. Sequel answers questions and is also a better game all around.

Go for it.

There have been some great sales on PSN. Between this and Steam I always have something to play even though I'm broke.
Meanwhile my 3DS is collecting dust because the games I want cost more than 30€ even though some of them are 2 years old.
Between retarded account systems, region locks and game prices, I really wonder how long nintendo can go on like this, despite the quality of their games.

How do I know the questions don't really get answered in the sequel and you guys are just setting me up for more despair?

If anything, this series is guaranteed to have a third part and a conclusion due to the success it's had in Japan, compared to Zero Escape, so everything will eventually be answered.

It's £29 on amazon uk.
I bought it for £25 (10% off) from zavvi last week but it's out of stock now.
