First iPhone 6/6 Plus Reviews

I am actually shocked at Pierce's Verge review. He knocked Apple for "playing catchup" instead of doing what Apple normally does, which is finding something existing, and doing it in a way that stands out. He states all Apple did was up the screen size without taking advantage of more real estate.

Then gives it a 9.0.

Because he still finds it to be a great phone (more than likely mainly due to iOS)?

I think it's more of the fact that Apple is trying to pass off a 1080p screen as this superb wonder and whatnot.

umm... so? Maybe it is a superb wonder. It's not like they're saying they invented it or did it first.. "Hey guys iphone 6 Plus has a 1080p screen!!!" "Fuck you apple." wha-?

It matters if the stuff LG/Samsung/etc are offering today are 2 years ahead of what Apple is now doing.

Samsung has had 4 generations to perfect the Note. The software is tailored to be productive, with stylus shortcuts and the ability to run 2 apps on one screen. It has a bigger screen than the 6+, but is not as tall as the 6+ is.

Many people have realized this and moved from iPhone to Android. But it's also true that if the product Apple is offering is great in it's own right, every consumer might not compare and move on. But Samsung is selling a lot of phones, and they convert a lot of iPhone users.

this is pretty baseless.

Android phones offered larger screens because they really wanted to hit 720p and 1080p, and the fastest way to do that was raise screen size. Meanwhile Apple felt that the user experience of end to end screen reach in the palm of your hand was more important at the time so minimally raised screen size where most of their users were ok with it, or at least ok with it enough to not want to leave iOS. It wasn't the other companies were ahead but a difference in focus. Eventually the industry moved on.. it happens.. but to say apple was "two years behind" is pretty baseless considering how many 5's and 5s'es they sold...

memory is another baseless point. Android HAS TO have 2-3GB to operate.. Plain and simple. It's not that they "look out for their users" as much as the user experience at 1GB on any modern android phone would be unacceptable. Beyond that, at 1GB on a modern android, most of the actual high end apps (games primarily) would ALSO suffer dramatically. It would be "game runs beautifully on iOS, has performance issues on Android". Android moving above 1GB was a necessity, plain and simple. Apple it has up to now bit them in the butt on only one place.. multi-tab web browsing. Is it less than optimal? Sure. Is it worth it for apple to eat the cost of 1GB to address one single user aspect of the phone? They say not. However the rest of the OS runs perfectly fine on 1GB. Apps run perfectly fine and 1:1 with Android versions on 1GB. Apple will move above 1GB at the same point that Android manufacturers did... when the entire phone experience would be sub-optimal staying at 1GB.

It's also silly to point out "that's why people move to android. others are just happy staying". Because the converse is also true. Go into ANY phone thread and you also see plenty of people go from android to iphone. It goes both ways and will likely continue to forever.

People are online complaining those phones don't work and receive updates in 2014. OMFG APPLE DIDN'T INTRODUCE A 1080P SMARTPHONE IN 2012! This is an epic failure because Apple didn't introduce a 5.5 inch iPhone in 2011. <--- ONE YEAR AFTER INTRODUCING THE REVOLUTIONARY IPHONE 4 APPLE FAILED TO INTRODUCE A 5.5 inch iPhone. Let's keep going with the fanboyism. The Nexus S had NFC in 2010 which was promptly disabled... but, but, but, it was around in 2010!
Every OEM's CEO you listed would give their soul to sell half as many iPhones Apple sails in TWO FUCKING MONTHS with "old features".
Apple wasn't first to market so the new iPhones failed. This makes awful business sense by the way. HOLD THIS L.

My point is two fold: those devices you listed struggle to function and receive updates in 2014. I'm talking about working period not even the tech side. It makes little to no sense to arrive first to market with a features that are barely used, won't work in a year or two anyway that arbitrarily increase the BOM because OS WARZ dictate you fill a spec sheet.
My Galaxy S3 runs like the day I bought it (but even longer because I bought a nice 7000mah aftermarket battery) and I've received updates for it this year. Seriously I get like over 20 hours of screen on time depending on my signal. My phone runs for days.

What is the argument again?

I'm on a data cap and don't experience that issue. I'm on mobile gaf constantly. I just close tabs and disable gifs.

You are also buying one of the most expensive phones in the market, and it doesn't offer you more RAM for no other reason than giving Apple a bigger share of profits.

If you are all right with paying that much and still having to manage tabs on your broswer: Fine. But it is not hard to understand why people would be unhappy about it.

All these new iPhones is going to do, is push Google and Samsung, HTC, LG etc. to up their game even more.

Competition does nothing but benefit the consumer, so I'm glad to see Apple make the foray into the larger phone market.

Same here, as much as I dislike ios itself, and cringe at the tech media's apple coverage I always want the new iphones to be good because I'll probably get another ipad in 3-4 years and any real improvements hit both, competition is good, and I don't want friends/family to have shitty phones like when the 4 dropped calls nonstop.

I enjoyed Gruber's review on the phone. It felt like an, I use iPhones and this is how it went over the past week, review. It seemed like he focused more on the differences between the 6 and 6+ really. I'm kind of glad I went with the 6 at this point. I feel like the plus would've probably been too big for me. I just think it'd be a little cumbersome to carry around. If I had a purse it's probably be fine. Maybe I'll just start wearing a fanny pack.

Whether they're late or not, he's grading the product they're making right now. Which evidently is a great phone that could have been even a bit better.

I'll have to be honest. I've seen tabs need to reload. But it's actually rare for me, and actually never a problem unless I am looking at something extremely media heavy. And even then sometimes they don't reload

Then again, I am never cycling through 15 tabs either pissed that they don't reload. I always have lots of tabs, but generally only cycle between 3 at most on the phones.

I don't think 1 gb will be problematic until they want to do side by side multitasking, which they still seem to not give a shit about

The handsets provide a minimum set of features determined by Google, which has sourced several of the components to help cut manufacturing costs.

To meet Google's minimum standards they all have:

a 4.5in (11.4cm) display
1GB of RAM (random-access memory)
a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front one
a quadcore processor sourced from Taiwanese company Mediatek
the ability to run the next version of Android, due for release soon

Or, um, well, not

I dont view websites on my iPhone as much as I do on the iPad so I never really noticed the refreshing. The ram issue isnt priority for me on the iPhone but I really hope Apple ups it to 2GB for this years iPad refreshes.

regarding the whole tab thing.. I am a heavy user. Like I pretty much solely browse the web on my ipad or iphone outside of work... and my tabs CONSTANTLY reload.

for me personally, this only bugs me in ONE aspect... forms.. that's it. filling out forms and tabbing between to get info to copy and paste... I mean you have to work around it or you will possibly get fucked..

(oh, and fucking GIF heavy GAF threads............. or youtube heavy threads....)

would I love 2GB to get rid of that limitation? Of course. Do I see or feel the phone suffers in any single way outside of that? Not at all. Do apps crash? Of course. Do apps crash on Android also? Of course. There is no way to directly link that is a memory issue on either.

Android has 2-3GB because the ENTIRE phone experience on any modern top tier android phone would be miserable without 2-3GB. Once Apple hits that point, where the ENTIRE phone experience would be lesser on 1GB.. I have to believe they'll adjust accordingly. My guess is that will come when they move on from Cyclone.. Being that Cyclone hit last year, there's a possibility that they will move off of it next year.. Two years is pretty decent for a top end CPU architecture. So my guess is that whatever follows up Cyclone will have 2GB on die.

modern top tier phones.. you know like I stated numerous other places in the post? I would LOVE to see KitKat with TouchWiz run on 1GB... with zero apps running.

edit - LOL!!!!! You even tried using Android ONE minimum specs to make your point!?!? for fuck sake.... yeah let's show minimum req's for developing market phones to compare to iphone...

The first Android One devices are made by Micromax - already India's bestselling mobile-phone maker - Karbonn and Spice.

Three Indian companies have released the first Android One handsets, but others are planning other versions

the iPhone 6 Plus is better in some cases, slower in others compared to 6

I still haven't seen anything outside of web browsing that indicates this. Maybe MAYBE if we'd have heard devs bitching about 1GB I'd agree with you. But as it stands right now the 1GB never affected either the 5s nor iPad Air yet outside of browsing. Obviously Apple controlling the SoC, OS, and SDK all play a major part in that. I have to believe they talk to the closer devs during the process to see where they stand on memory usage.

That is a huge chunk of my phone usage and if it already showing signs of stress there, then I am worried about overall performance once iOS9, 10 come out for it.

eh... all of those are within standard deviation.. nowhere near conclusive enough (yet) to say the Plus is more powerful.

absolutely.. and in no way am I arguing with folks like yourself. I get it.. BUT at this second it's a quality of life issue. Hopefully A9 moves to new silicon and as a result they add an extra GB to the die..

well if you look at the tests and the results its clear

the CPU results, iPhone 6 seems to have a 5% advantage
the GPU results, iPhone 6 seems to have a 5% advantage

hence why I said "yet". More testing will need to be done. 5% is well within standard deviation of test results. Now if after numerous tests over a month or so that 5% holds, then yeah absolutely.

Seems like the 6 and 6 Plus have pretty comparable performance. So that means the deciding factor will be the size and battery life. If the Plus's battery life is indeed as good as Engadget and Verge make it out to be, then that will more than make up for any small performance hiccups.

to be complete:
size
battery life
OIS

OIS SHOULD actually give the camera a pretty noticeable advantage in low light shots.

Read elsewhere that Kit Kat will run on 512mb RAM. Certain apps like Chrome run in a low-memory mode. Cuts out the card based tab switcher.

Did any reviews put up full res shots from iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6+ with low light conditions? All I've seen are some thumbnails on Engadget?

OIS SHOULD actually give the camera a pretty noticeable advantage in low light shots.

As a current Lumia 920 user, I simply cannot imagine going back to non-OIS phones. That's the main reason why I'm getting the 6 Plus despite not liking the huge size. Getting a regular 6 would seem like a downgrade to me from my 920.

Early impressions are positive. I really love my HTC One M8, but the camera is lacking for sure.

I picked up an M7 before returning it for the 5s and I was extremely disappointed in the camera. For all the accolades it got I thought it was pretty bad. I was bummed to see the M8 wasn't much better.

*takes notes*

So you'd recommend the 6 vs the 6+? I'll definitely take that into consideration. I haven't seen too many ownership experience thoughts from those with 5"+ phones to date.

lol, one of the reasons I got my GN2 was because of the swappable battery. Can't tell you how awesome it is to be able to really push the phone and not have to worry about battery life because I have an extra battery in my purse. Don't think I could cope with a sealed phone.

Android HAS TO have 2-3GB to operate.

lol, no.

We don't even know if the 1GB is causing tab reloads or just safari being badly written. Likewise we don't know that 2GB would solve it.

Like you, my main issue is forms reloading and losing my data. Especially when I want to switch tabs or even apps to copy something and paste it into a form. Maybe apple could tweak safari to hold tabs with forms foe longer without refreshing?

None 4 has OIS as does the LG G3.

also after carrying a note 2,note 3, and One Plus one, i will never(ever) purchase a large phone again.

This. I loved my Note 3 at first, and defended the ridiculous size to everyone, but it really is more of a hassle to have a phone so big. I considered the Plus for the better camera, battery, etc... but I pre-ordered a 6 instead.

this is pretty baseless.

No, it's not. Just because iPhone 5/5S continued to sell and Apple claimed screens shouldn't get bigger due to the human thumb length it doesn't mean Android manufacturers weren't improving the experience as well as making bigger and faster phones.

Not playing which-phone-is-cooler, just saying yes, it does matter to the average consumer that manufacturers did what Apple is doing 2 years ago, because Samsung comes along and spends $500 million to put commercials in everyone's face that says "Galaxy does what iPhone can't, or is just catching up on" and then they sell tons of Galaxy devices. I don't have Samsung's conversion data, but it's clearly been working for them.

I have an upgrade coming up in February 2015. At that rate, do you think it would be wise to wait until the inevitable iPhone6S or similar upgrade? I know for sure that I would like a new iPhone soon, but I want to wait until Apple snaps out of their stuborness and adds on another Gig of Ram and get the new iOS 8 perfected.

What are some of your projections on what the iPhone6S will have that the iPhone6 does not? I know it's early, but I'm almost certain I'm going to wait for the 6S.

All the iPhone 6 hype has really gotten me to appreciate what a great value the Nexus 5 is.

OIS
NFC
2GB RAM on Stock Android
1080 5" screen 445 ppi (compared to 326 on iPhone 6 and 401 on the +)

all at half the price.

Can't wait to see what Google does with the Nexus 6 and Android L

regarding the whole tab thing.. I am a heavy user. Like I pretty much solely browse the web on my ipad or iphone outside of work... and my tabs CONSTANTLY reload.

I hate Safari tabs reloading as well, but other browsers like Mercury don't have that problem. I can generally have 15 open without them reloading. I don't know why Safari loves to reload tabs.

Same phone I have! Can't wait to ditch it for the iPhone 6. Never gonna look back.

Agree. Although some of the iPhone 6+ reviews mention that it is pricey, they don't seem to take it into account in the actual score.

If you're going to talk shite, you're going to get called up on it.

Camera was Weak.
Battery life was as atrocious as iPhone 5
The screen has higher PPI but also dimmer than its competition which made it look very dull.

Yes, but probably will expand in time. What more do you want to use it for? Between AirPlay, AirDrop, BlueTooth, and WiFi, I feel that connectivity is already well covered.
The chip is there so why not use it now? Taping phones to transfer files is quick and easy, using NFC tags to set profiles etc are great.

Security is the main reason at this point, just like the TouchID last year, which didn't get opened to developers this year. And no need to tap phones when you can AirDrop files directly. My point is, that the iPhone already has a lot of connectivity baked in, and NFC doesn't really bring a lot new to the table. At least for the average user.

Actually they said during the announcement more functionality is coming soon, like they have a deal with a hotel chain to unlock doors with NFC, iirc.

I remember them demoing the door unlocking with the Apple Watch, which has NFC as well, but didn't see it with the iPhone. But yeah, I suspect the NFC chip will be unlocked for more things in the near future.

After seeing the "White" iPhone I decided to cancel my Space Grey iPhone 6+ and made the switch. The delay put me back about 2-3 weeks from my original order date, but oh well. I feel much better this time around after seeing the pictures roll out. I just couldn't go with the black front again.
