First iPhone 6/6 Plus Reviews

I dislike TouchWiz and Samsung, and G3's resolution limits its performance.
I get it. I don't have an issue with TouchWiz myself but it seems a lot do.

I have my problems with iOS as well. No true multitasking, no removable battery or micro sd card slot, safari browser could be better, screen res could be better, more personalization etc.

It's all just really dependent on the user's needs I guess.

How do iPhone threads always get shit up with these Android people who have no interest in buying the phone and just want to ensure everyone knows that it's not as good or behind the times?

Does this happen in all the new Android handset release threads?

Like...it'd be fine if the motivation was "Hey, I don't understand how the iPhone has weaker specs than all these other devices on the market, yet it seems like reviewers love the phone more. What's up with that? I'm interested!"

Instead it's: "What is this reviewer smoking?! These iPhones are shit compared to the phone I've been using for literally years."

...why is that cool?

Me specifically was waiting to see what Apple was bringing with their iPhone 6+ and it wasn't what I wanted in the end so I'll not be getting it. It's not the end of the world and it's not like I'm shitting on the iPhone 6. It just doesn't do what I expect.

I do like reading and discussing it in a pleasant way and there is no reason I shouldn't be allowed to do so.

I am actually shocked at Pierce's Verge review. He knocked Apple for "playing catchup" instead of doing what Apple normally does, which is finding something existing, and doing it in a way that stands out. He states all Apple did was up the screen size without taking advantage of more real estate.

Then gives it a 9.0.

There are two types of good.
1st one is like the iphone 6, it's solid but not spectacular.
2nd one is like the iphone 4, it's so friggin amazing that it makes everything that comes before it look plain bad.

I remember them demoing the door unlocking with the Apple Watch, which has NFC as well, but didn't see it with the iPhone. But yeah, I suspect the NFC chip will be unlocked for more things in the near future.

Again, iirc here, but the hotel stuff was announced before they even announced the watch so I'd assume that it's doable with the phone.

That seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I'm talking about folks whipping out Android market distribution charts and flaming reviewers for bias. Seems petty and unconstructive.

Camera was Weak.
Battery life was as atrocious as iPhone 5
The screen has higher PPI but also dimmer than its competition which made it look very dull.

This! Even as an android head myself, it annoys me when they throw baseless numbers around when trying to compare to the apple equivalent. Is the 6+ worth double the price of the N5? Nah, but the 6+ is a much better/complete phone, and Apple Tax®. The Nexus 6 should at least be on par with the 6+, just by making up for the areas the N5 lacked in. At half the price, and the Android L's release, that would be one hell of a bargain.

Android heads: Big Numbers
Apple heads: Anecdotal Evidence

With a handful of people arguing very valid points, this seems to be the basis of every iPhone 6 thread.

I wonder if those phones mean Apple will never again make something smaller. One of the reasons why I picked iPhones over Android handsets was the size :(

So Android HAS TO have 2-3GB to operate actually means Android needs 1GB to operate.....
If you're going to talk shite, you're going to get called up on it.

are you dumb or just blatantly obtuse?

"Android" is nowhere near the same as "modern top tier android phone". I said it RIGHT IN THE POST you half ass quoted.

I would LOVE to see KitKat with TouchWiz run on 1GB

your ridiculous argument that "android in a flavor that is nowhere near a top tier smartphone only needs 1GB, thus top tier phones could get away with 1GB, but lol Apple only has 1GB". what?

I wonder if those phones mean Apple will never again make something smaller. One of the reasons why I picked iPhones over Android handsets was the size :(

agreed. I would definitely buy a future 4" phone even if it meant sub-720p. I'm fine being in the minority, just like 5.5" users are likewise in the minority.

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 mini, iPhone 7 Plus. Apple would be foolish to not offer a smaller phone.

I think 4 will be the smallest. 4.7 will become standard and 5.5 will be the maximum. we have finally reached parity in screen size.

anything smaller than 4, Apple will promote the watch. Anything bigger and Apple will promote iPad Mini or iPad Air.

I seriously can't wrap my head around the people that come in these threads and start saying, "but Android this, Android that."

This is a review thread for the iPhone. We all know that Androids have had NFC, big screens, etc, etc for three years and don't need to keep hearing this shit over and over. The reason things like NFC are big deal now is because it's Apple (and I don't care how much you hate Apple and how much they suck) and Apple has the money and influence to make NFC popular and widespread. ApplePay is going to be awesome because Apple has a ton of banks and retailers onboard. It's stuff like this that makes Apple (dare I say?) better than all the rest. They're making all the things other smart phone users have had for years a reality. People are talking about NFC now, they're excited, they really know what it is, and will now have the chance to begin using it regularly in their daily lives.

So compare phones all you want, but please stop bitching about how much better Android is!

Have there been any reviews with direct comparisons between the iPhone 5s and 6+ cameras with images?

not yet. I'm expecting very marginal differences. the biggest upgrade seems to be autofocus with Verge stating that they were constantly moving the camera, and it never "autofocused" yet the picture was constantly crisp (i.e. near instantaneously).

Biggest comparison I want to see is low light performance between 5s/6 and 6 Plus. Also maybe maybe just a tiny bit curious between flashes, but phone flashes suck regardless so not super curious.

If Apple is really serious about making Apple Pay ubiquitous then having a cheap plastic iPhone 7 with NFC would go a long way towards that goal.

very true... but my guess is that will be a much bigger push for them next year when:
a) ApplePay has had the term and growth of 12 months, and
b) iPhone 6 will be the $99 model.

I feel like the design considerations for supporting 3 different variants of the iPhone would be too much. Trying to keep hardware cost down, components consistent, design elements similar... it would be a very hard balancing act between the design and the business sides of the house.

Assuming the demand for the 6 is equal to or greater than the 5S, I can't see them trying to support 3 full device types.

I'd see them maybe going to a 4" and 5.5" world and take out the 4.7" possibly, but I really don't think so.

It is kind of silly. Mostly because of the fact that the iPhone doesn't really need the kind of specs Android does to run iOS extremely well. I just want my phone to do what I want it to do quickly and easily. I've had android up until the 5s. The only thing I missed was the larger screen which I am getting with the 6. I guess people don't realize that people want different things out of their products.

I'm with you here. I've had iPhones. I've had Android phones. Both have their benefits, and both have their detractors. But to purposely shit on Apple, or Android, is just sad to me. I love technology. I love anything that brings new things to the table. Both product lines do that, but in their own way.

Well you have to consider that in the event they ever refresh their iPod Touch line, it's still going to be a 4" device and not a 4.7" one. A theoretical iPhone 7 mini could basically just use that design. I think the current iPod Touch design already resembles the iPhone 6 more than the 5.

I'm the same way. I don't like Androids for certain reasons that outweigh my complaints about the iPhones I've had/have. They both have their flaws and I'd almost argue that Android's biggest flaw is their fan base. It's like they feel inferior or something and have to brag about their powerful phones or something to prove a point, when in reality, nobody gives a shit about.

I like Apple for forcefully pushing the industry forward and like my iPhones.

Androids have their pros and cons.
iPhones also have their pros and cons.
They're both different and everyone knows that so there's no need to fight about which is better.

Agh I'm still so torn about which size to go with. I have big hands, but plenty of these reviewers are men who likely have similar hands. They make it seem too big. I just really want the OIS and landscape stuff.

Are you able to split the keyboard in landscape, like on an iPad?

Get the plus, if you don't like it return in 14 days. You know if you went the other way and get the 6 and try to return it for the plus you will find it hard to get it due to less supply of plus

Android users hate iPhone... It's in their DNA or something. You go to Windows Phone threads and you don't see any of this. You go to BLACKBERRY threads and you don't see any of this. but mention iPhone and 100 android owners will stop in to say how much shit they think it is. It's like iPhone stole their woman or beat their dog or something.

I frankly see the upside of the top android phones.. however those upsides aren't what I value. The only camera that has truly wow'ed me MORE than iPhone is Nokia on Windows Phone.. but low light performance, 120/240Hz performance, pixel size and shot quality on a phone that hits all other marks for me. I loathe digital zoom, and 8Mp prints up 1:1 at 8x10 roughly. And obviously the OS and UI. Every Android phone I've used just has a laggy UI.. and I know these same yahoos are going to say "well you haven't used [blank]" and while the truth is I don't know if I've used [blank], again EVERY android phone I've used, even up through this past weekend.. it's just laggy and unresponsive IMHO compared to iPhone. even watching the phones' owners use them... maybe they were 2-3 years old, maybe not. I don't know.

so for those reasons, iPhone is my preferred platform. But when others say "well I like Android or Windows Phone for this reason" I'm like "cool. seriously glad you like your phone, a device you have to love considering you use it day in and day out."

No Apps!
Dead!

I have an upgrade coming up in February 2015. At that rate, do you think it would be wise to wait until the inevitable iPhone6S or similar upgrade? I know for sure that I would like a new iPhone soon, but I want to wait until Apple snaps out of their stuborness and adds on another Gig of Ram and get the new iOS 8 perfected.

What are some of your projections on what the iPhone6S will have that the iPhone6 does not? I know it's early, but I'm almost certain I'm going to wait for the 6S.

probably a better camera (maybe flushed with case?), A9 processor etc. There will probably be something to entice the 6 owners, think Siri on the 4S and Touch ID on 5s.

8.1 should be out around March that should add some more stability and features.

Every time I question myself if the Plus is too big, I just have to remember how much I loved the iPad mini when it came out, and even though I got it simultaneously with my current iPhone 5 back then, I just wished the mini was a tad smaller and with cell capabilities so it could be my phone as well.

The Plus is exactly it.

It effectively replaces iPad + iPhone for me.

lol.. to be fair though, people don't shit up Windows Phone threads with that. Well, unless it's actualy WP users :D

This is what my wife has been demanding... I am trying to fight her on it... To me, having a phone that's way too big, or having a "shitty tablet", seems like a poor compromise (she already has an iPad mini). There are other things involved (wanting to sell the mini to buy the phone outright) but ultimately I'm like "you have a MacBook Air, you have an iPad mini, there is literally no reason to get the Plus".... we'll see though...

Had our delivery of the iPhones at work.

The 6 is gorgeous, absolutely stunning. Feels fantastic.

The 6+ feels cheap and tacky. It's weird how there's such a contrast between the models, at least to my taste.

It's like they have a mandate from Google to "educate" us on how they had it first or better or cheaper or whatever. Reviewers like they iPhone? Paid off fanboys. Customers like the iPhone? Brainwashed fanboys. It's pretty sad watching these posters, some of which I respect in other threads, participate in such a stupid 'war.'

Yeah they do.

Ever read comments like: Why would you choose a third rate phone when you can already have the best one?! Windows Mobile is dead. WP7 is dead. Therefore, WP8 is dead.

complaining that a brand new phone from a company like Apple is weaker than the competition and slow to adopt features that those phones have is a legit complaint. In pretty much in tech product announcement you're going to see people who take specs into consideration when deciding whether they want a phone or not. These people have no interest in the phone because of the things they complain about and people who buy iOS products do the same thing whenever people bring up Android lol.

To clarify: yes, they're the same materials etc, I just think the size difference between them makes the bigger one feel less premium. It's strange, and probably completely down to my personal taste and hatred of big phones. Sorry for not being more clear.

Similar to console wars and everything in life.

As I said earlier, people seem to believe life is always about winning and who is right. That way, they can always look back at some decisions when they are down and use their right decisions as self-esteem boosters.

but but but life is all about winning!

Facebook = showboat game who gets the most likes and approval from friends for actions
purchases = who gets the most sales numbers is the winner.

People want to be with winners, not losers.

Win win win!

Well with confidence I can say that I usually see that crap in some of the random threads that flare up, but it's not like this in the Android-GAF thread. Most of us there are actually more knowledgeable about phones compared to most users on these boards.

Some of us use both.

And therefore hate certain things about both platforms that we'd like to see made better...

right. I should not have generalized. I simply meant "that type of android user" which for some reason appears to be less prevalent or even non-existent on the other platforms..

that was kind of the point.. Go into any Android, WP, or Blackberry thread and it's people talking about the phones/platforms. Go into an iphone thread and it's that plus a certain type of Android user starting shit up.

As someone who switched to an HTC One for a little while I definitely like a larger screen than what Apple has been offering. I just prefer the iOS ecosystem.

Now I get the best of both worlds.
As another HTC One owner I'd be interested to hear how you experience the resolution downgrade. If you experience it at all that is. The techradar review mentions that you definitely notice it, but maybe if you just switch you'll get used to it soon enough. I'm not particularly interested in the iPhone (at least until it halves in price, which it won't), but something like the Z3 compact seems interesting (I think >4.8 is too big). I just don't think I can handle going below 400ppi.

I don't get why people are screaming that the 6 plus is too big, the Galaxy Note seems to have carved a specialty niche for a larger phone that I could see some iPhone users slipping in to. My dad will probably get a 6+ for his next phone. He needs something easier to use and read.

What is the restocking fee if I open up my 6+ and find it too big? If I ordered from Verizon online, can I go into an Apple store and exchange it?

It's got to do with the fact that android as an os and hardware in terms of specs alone was behind in terms of phone tech for a number of years and Apple iphone owners to them looked like elitists while they were proud of supporting an open platform. Now that the os features are more and hardware specs are more but the experience is still not as smooth overall, it's a psychological reaction that 'hey we used to be behind but now we are ahead and you should join as we Are better because we are better because our number of features are specs are better' while ignoring the experience of using the phone itself. Iphone owners are mostly satisfied with the experience more than the specs. Having used my wife's android phones from 2010 to now (htc m8) I know them well to talk about them

You must be new to this kind of thing. For years every android thread had Apple fans acting smug. Only since the premium Android phones overtook Apple phones do you see the reverse happening.
It's the same with every fanboy war of course.

your ridiculous argument that "android in a flavor that is nowhere near a top tier smartphone only needs 1GB, thus top tier phones could get away with 1GB, but lol Apple only has 1GB". what?

Seriously, now you're just making things up.
I've made no argument, other than point out your statement that android HAS TO HAVE (in capitals.....) 2-3GB to operate is bollocks.

I sold my iPad mini due to lack of use... I just can't juggle 3 devices daily and my Macbook is way too important, even on the go.

I love the iPad but I don't have enough opportunities to use it. The Plus kinda reaches half way there. Just hope there's enough software parity.

Well part of what makes the Galaxy Note special is that it uses a stylus and lets you do more with it as a tablet. The 6 Plus for the most part is really just a bigger 6 with some landscape mode features that resemble tablet views for now. They aren't necessarily the same other than the size.
