Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

would love to go back to the green team to try one of these cards but i still am holding off with my 3Gb 7970 GHz Edition, the reason why is that my main gaming PC is connected to my Panasonic Plasma HDTV in the living room....so 1080p is as high as resolution as i can go with my big screen for the time being..until i go 4k OLED later in the coming years.

So i suppose its not really worth it for me where im static at 1080p and getting 60fps on all games with plenty of performance room left for all newer PC games thus far, i haven't had to turn down any graphic settings yet for any of them. Although keep in mind that my 7970 is overclocked to a beastly 1200mhz core and 1650mhz memory at a 384 bus....I mean thats about 4.6TF of performance....I just don't see any reason for me or anyone that is in my position to upgrade yet.

I just get this feeling to hold off and if i do want one of these cards ..if i hold off 6 - 8 months from now these cards will be even more affordable and my current OC'd 7970 card will and is more than capable of performing at the 1080p/60fps level for the time being.

So there, i guess i just convinced myself to hold off lol

Haha, no problem! Looking to maybe buy that card for myself, too, and 16" would be way too long.

Yeah, also, I checked, found a pic of the GB 7970 which is my card, and the GB 970.

If it was really 16 inches it'd be a third longer. Not a small bit. The end of the insertion slot into the MOBO is halfway on the first and only about 40% in the second. That's not 5 inches longer that's for sure.

EDIT: Found even more similar pictures that show the size comparison more vividly. The Gigabyte 7970 is 27cm in length and the Gigabyte 970 is 30cm, both according to Guru3D

I'm disappointed somewhat that after nearly 2 years, the GTX 980 can only beat my GTX Titan by 2-5 fps in each game @ 1440p & 1080p.

I was hoping for a bigger difference, but I can't say I'm not happy for myself. Plus I still get DX12.

I will tell people get a 780Ti if you can find it cheap, since you will be getting near equal performance as a GTX980.
Yeah, the difference isn't that huge, but perhaps it's done on purpose so that people who spent $500-700+ on a 780ti won't feel ripped off?

In this way both newcomers and 780 owners can be happy for a couple more years until the big guns come out.

Damn. The cards sold out so fast. :(

I just decided to put down an order for the out-of-stock EVGA 970 Superclocked on Amazon and I suppose will patiently wait for it. I might have been able to catch the Gigabyte one but I have no experience with their products and thus far I've been satisfied with EVGA's quality and lasting ability (at least their 560Ti was super amazing)

Oh well, I suppose I can wait a few weeks.

EDIT: And yeah I did go to EVGA's own website linked in here earlier, but I got so confused with the different variations that were being offered and what the difference was between them and what all those acronyms meant...

Do we know if any of the cards come with additional games? I just saw the Inno3D GTX970 for 314€ and I might buy it.

some of the cards i've seen listed comes with a code for the new borderlands game. it'll probably say it in the listing if it comes with a game

Okay so I kind of just ordered a GPU without any other parts for a PC. I have my old PC but I need a fresh build. 4690k CPU sound good? Only thing I'm trying to figure out is the CPU.

Oh god, so close to ordering a pair of those EVGA 980s... Must...Resist...

Wouldn't it be better to wait for aftermarket coolers?

That's what I'm wondering too. I thought I wanted the model with the ACX 2.0 cooler (1266MHz Base Clock/1367MHz Boost Clock), but it's not available yet, and while it will allow the GPU to run cooler, the temperature of everything else in the case will rise. The Superclocked card with the reference magnesium cooler (1241MHz Base Clock/1342MHz Boost Clock) probably won't overclock as high, and will be louder at full load, but it won't affect the temperature of the other components since it blows the hot air out of the case. In fact, those coolers often help lower the air temperature inside the case.

So, should I wait for the ACX 2.0 version to be available, or pick up the Superclocked reference model tomorrow? Decisions, decisions...

Well my 570 just died, tempted to replace it with a 970..

OR

Throw out the trusty 2500k and do a full rebuild with a 5820K, 980 and a ROG Swift.

$450AUD vs $3000AUD+ hmmm

You may be right, but then again, it makes me think that big corporations like Nvidia don't really care about those who bought Titans and the 700 series - it's all about releasing a new product for profit, similar to Apple.

Regardless of performance, I would still have waited for their next iteration as they pushed back stacked DRAM an Unified Memory - and the biggest one, a 20nm chip.

They literally pushed everything to Pascal, not to mention all previous cards will be getting DX12 support regardless (http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2014/03/20/directx-12/), and Pascal will be 20nm, offering better temps, better oc, and better clocks. Unless you are upgrading, I would not buy the 900 series.

Any point in going from a 7970 to one of these? I wanna try an Nvidia card after owning nothing but AMD.

Have a 7950 overclocked here and I'm tending towards no. There are some benchmarks that showed a decent increase, but some were fairly close. I ignored the 980 results because of nvidias crazy pricing so focused on the 970.

If you wanted less noise or decent downsampling support then maybe. My 7950 is bloody loud at load. But I think I'll see what comes next. Plus if I get a rift next year I'll need more power than the 970 offers I think. So I'll probably get whatever the 970 equivalent is this time next year.

I absolutely cannot stand that Visa verification thing on newegg. Order got declined twice when I've never had issues with my card anywhere else so just used Paypal.

Maxwell could still get 20nm chips next year or the one after though. Whenever Big Maxwell and the 100x refresh launches I presume. Or there was that theory they'll skip 20nm and go for 16nm when Pascal launches.

Possibly, but I don't see a chip shrink until next release to be honest. I mentioned below that they had problems with 20nm production, IIRC, I still feel this will be the case and they will stick with 20nm, or who knows I may be pleasantly surprised with the release of a 16nm chip which would be incredible.

I'm personally curious how the inevitable GTX980Ti will perform, those could potentially be awesome increases to see.

Pascal will be coming out in like 2016. I highly doubt it will be 20nm.

Seeing as they had problems producing 20nm for Maxwell, I think it is a realistic possibility, or who knows I may be pleasantly surprised.

Are these new cards good for mining? I don't give a shit about mining but I wanna know if we're gonna have another repeat of the R9 290/290X where miners brought the price up $200-300 cause of their bullshit. Basically I wanna know if I should jump on one now or do I have time to wait a bit?

So I've never ever bought a video card at launch. What's the failure rate on these things? Do a lot of people get lemons or are they pretty reliable?

There might not be a 980Ti though. Like there wasn't for the 680 and this is the equivalent for that. The 1080 might get one though :p But who knows.

You'll be fine. No worries of mining craze this time.

They're very reliable, especially if you go with a reputable manufacture like EVGA or ASUS. I've never had a GPU go bad.

Shit, did I miss these cards from Amazon actually being on sale? Or did the page just come up with out of stock/2-4 weeks waiitng time?

You missed it. They're still available on Newegg if you want.

It's not worth the cost now days to use GPU to mine, that shit is done.

Okay so even with paypal my bank keeps declining the order. I have more than enough money. Is this some weird thing where large purchases in the middle of the night are blocked or something?

Bah, was trying to get on by Saturday. :P

16nm is essentially 20nm with FinFET, and is coming out only a year after 20nm. 20nm seems suited only for SoC's at this point in time. Next fall the Apple A9 will already be rocking the 16nm node, maybe NVIDIA can get some scraps a year later. Who knows...

I really hope they don't call it the 1080, but then again, the marketing potential is too high to pass up... lol

Fair points, then this makes me even more excited at the potential gains from 28nm to 16nm. That is pretty damn big.

It very well may be. Call your credit card company and ask what's up. The might be able to sort it out so you can sleep.

Where can I check performance of the the 970 compared to the 670? Too bad the prices in Aus are so high, I really want an upgrade for the Witcher 3.

So i switched my order from amazon over to newegg.
Don't have to wait 2-4 weeks.
Didn't have to pay tax.
Got a cool $5 gift card deal.
Since I saved like $70 over amazon I bought another Gigabyte 970.

This will be my first Nvidia card and first multi GPU setup. I'm not bottlenecking with a i5-4790k?

I was pretty hell bent on getting SLI 980's but I just can't bring myself to do it after seeing 970 performance.

The performance to price ratio on the 970 is just insane, ordered 2 of those instead.

I'm not bottlenecking with a i5-4790k

Of course not
