Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

damn, amd just got beat down. i got my r9 280x a couple months ago for $230 and i still feel good about that purchase but im guessing they are going to lower all the prices of their existing gpus until they can release their answer to 980/970. maybe i could have gotten it at sub $200 instead...
 
Someone mentioned in the 680 sales thread that I now noticed, they really did go out of there way to not compare these to the 780 and 780ti. Likely would not have looked as good lol.

If I have the money to spare come November I probably will, if AssCreed Unity demands more than 2GB VRAM for max settings at 1680x1050 (AA/AF aside), which it almost certainly will. If I had 4GB 670s I'd wait for the next crop of cards, but alas.
 
Since I'm probably not going to get it tomorrow or Saturday, I went and ordered from Newegg, I have resigned myself to next week!
 
Wow, so it looks like a factory OC'd 970 mostly beats a 290X. Nuts.

I'll be getting one of these very soon.

Also, SLI 970's have to be one of the best high-end options available in a long time. That's incredible performance for less than $700. Makes TitanZ and 295x2 look plain silly by comparison.
 
Hey, I've got an i7 3770k. That won't bottleneck the 970 will it? A similar question in this thread has me wondering. Im kind of out of the loop on that kind of thing.
 
Was really hoping Amazon would be stocked well since Prime is so fast. Oh well, still have my shoprunner trial so Newegg won't be too much slower.
 
Well shit. Now that I know I'm getting one of these, I'm reluctant to play anything new, knowing I'll be able to run it much better(or downsample the shit out of it) very soon. I started ACIV not too long ago and I think I'll put that on hold as well.

Probably just finish Divinity, and then maybe play some indie games for a little while.
 
Just switched my order to ASUS, I want the cards before the weekend and I like the STRIX concept. Will pick them up now. :p

No OC'ing for me, not my thing. I know I can get some more performance out of it, but the worry I'll be giving myself about heat (no matter how unfounded and paranoid) isn't worth it. Sides, the less heat the better, I'm trying to keep this case as cool and quiet as possible.

I have a GTX 670 2GB and most games are running at 60FPS @ 1080p. I am not looking to upgrade my monitor yet so the higher resolution isn't something I am chasing.

I have just chucked a load of money at my mortgage to pay off capital so things like this seems too frivolous at this time. I kept telling myself to hold out for the new architecture cards whenever that is (next year?).

It isn't worth it...

...is it??????
 
Still have not seen any 970 reference ones in Italian shops or CaseKing.. I guess they'll be receiving them by Monday and put them up then. Either way I am hoping to buy one in October.

EDIT: I am looking for Reference Design so I can water cool it later and saving some money on it too doesn't hurt I guess...
 
Alright, went ahead and ordered/reserved a factory overclocked EVGA GTX 980 at NCIX (interestingly enough, it's overclocked higher than the upcoming Gigabyte G1, in spite of using the reference blower), and will hopefully be picking it up tomorrow at their warehouse here in BC.

A stock 3770K is totally fine. If you're able to overlclock it even better. It will be a while until that chip becomes a serious bottleneck of any sort.

Yeah, I was eyeing the 295X2 as an alternative to SLI 980s if the latter would set me back more than USD$999, however with the 970 being within a stone's throw of the 290X at worst -- a deficit that a decent overclock could handily make up for -- I'll be sticking with Nvidia. Just as well, too, as I do like my PhysX effects, even though they tend to be grossly ostentatious and, with more recent titles, never justify the performance impact. ;)

Scan have a custom EVGA card up for preorder for £263. Once you add on the 20% VAT to the US prices, we're being charged less than £10 more than in the States. Hardly highway robbery.

I'm over the moon with these prices.

From a GTX 680 to a 980? I kind of want to, although I think I'll be fine waiting until The Witcher 3 arrives- will there be new iterations y'all think in the next couple months?
 
This gaming event is cool and all but new cards launch with no game bundle inside? Thought would at least be getting Borderlands Prequel or Far Cry 4. Nothing at all :/
 
Damn my Impatience, I could of saved $250AUD by getting 2x GTX 970's from Amazon instead of buying Locally.

Oh well I guess this teaches me a valuable lesson, still I cant wait to play with these cards especially coming from GTX 670 SLI.

Wait, you are allowed to buy GPU's from Amazon? I didn't think they shipped Electronics to AUS.

I guess as long as if/when you RMA it just goes back the Manufacturer and you don't have to go through Amazon, then it's fine. Because that's waay better then buying here, as you said, stores here are looking about $450-500 for a single reference 970, it's a joke, so $750 for two is delicious.
 
Fucking hell, I go out for some drinks while I wait for these cards to go on sale, and when I come back home they're all out from Amazon. Booo.

Sales tax is usually only around 8% in the States, so not quite as close as you're thinking, although its true people often forget about that when comparing prices.

The pricing on the 970 is way better than I expected. If a decent model is available for less than 300€ in Germany at some point I'll probably go for it.

That was the case just a few years ago, but these days certain products Amazon offers are "AmazonGlobal" eligible, which means they can be shipped to select international destinations, including Australia. I imported an EVGA 670 back in 2012 and even accounting for the exchange rate and shipping fee saved almost $100 compared to buying the same model from PCCG.

Yeah, there's no need to go through Amazon unless your card arrives damaged.
 
Prices are already plummeting. A Palit GTX970 for €309 and Inno3D GTX970 for €314. I think I'll wait until they drop below €300. The R9 290 is almost just as fast an available for 280 already.

Fwiw Maxwell supports DX 11.3 feature level whereas Kepler didn't even have full 11.1 support. It is much better placed for DX12.
 
Where are you guys ordering these cards from? Don't see them on sites I know. I'm probably going to get one of these next week, and I'll probably go with at least the 970, but I'm tempted to get the 980.

Edit: By the way, I'm only currently running a 500w PSU, and I figure I'll probably need an upgrade for whichever one of these I get. Could anyone recommend me some PSUs depending on which card I went with?
