Nvidia and Intel announce jointly developed 'Intel x86 RTX SOCs' for PCs with Nvidia graphics, also custom Nvidia data center x86 processors

That's a shame if it means we wont see further progress from intel in the high end graphics department. That said, I'm curious how well these integrated Nvidia graphics will function, especially if it can be dedicated as a PhysX processor. Also it's not the firs time Intel have done this, they did release a processor with integrated AMD Radeon GPU, and they licensed PowerVR cores in the early days of the Intel Atom.

Finally time for an Nvidia handheld

Switch 2's old ass 2021 taped out technology quite literally shamed AMD's portable chipsets in how inefficient they are and they did it on a samsung 8nm node.

Time to shift PC portables into next gear.

You mean on drugs.

A lot of issues last few years have stemmed from the CPU side. Bottle necks, not using all cores, etc.

I can only hope a joint partnership can help make it so devs have an easier time knowing where the stress should go so we see better optimized games.

People think the Xbox handheld is expensive wait until you see an Intel+NVIDIA handheld :messenger_tears_of_joy:

an Nvidia windows handheld would be insane ngl.

look what the ridiculously cut down Tegra T239 already can do while drawing half the power of the Steam Deck.

imagine an Nvidia powered handheld SoC that's allowed to draw 30W like some Windows Handhelds do in their Turbo mode!

Why is everyone in the thread talking about handhelds, am I missing something? To me this has the potential to have broader implications than just handhelds specifically

I like how the article says to expect at least a year before anything is produced.
How about 5 or more years? Maybe 2 year to get the next article with slightly more news.

Exciting news. Finally some good competition in the APU front. Going to be very pricey though lol.

Definitely holding out on this for my next laptop and PC handheld. These are going to be efficiency beasts.

What people cheering NVIDIA handhelds are forgetting is NVIDIA drivers suck ass on Linux (they also do on Windows but to a lesser degree) and that is what Steam uses on handhelds.

Because these are SOCs and that's what powers all of these PC Handhelds. Few of us would use these for Desktop PC gaming. Sony won't use them on console because they are in bed with AMD. Nintendo consoles are Nvidia ARM SOCs so they wont be using these.

You know, things can and do change...

Designs have likely already been taped out for almost a year, and contacts signed. It's too late, and it would also make backwards compatibility a massive challenge.

Yep. But this does mean Intel could try to get some handheld or "console" OEM deals using Intel+Geforce and just use the XBoxPC interface.

MS is trying to move everyone to Windows anyway.

If there ever emerges a reason for Nvidia to put effort into the Linux drivers, they will do so

Right now 99.999% of Nvidia PC gamers use Windows so that's where the effort goes

3 weeks ago but yeah

Intel/NVIDIA could get the Steam console/Deck 2 contract if they really want it, but it's not a big and profitable enough market for them to care. AMD made maybe $250 million? in profit from the Steam Deck, NVIDIA makes that in 1 day selling AI GPUs.
