Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I bought an R9 290 back in February for $274 so I'm not feeling a huge amount of remorse (yet). However, I'm definitely interested in the strides they've made in VR, so I might hop in in the next batch or two.

I cracked Smokey, got the 970 G1 from Gigabyte via Amazon. Snapped it up minutes after it went on sale.

Nice

Congrats you've been waiting forever. I think you've jumped in at the right time . Now to wait for dat international shipping :x

Newegg finally put the things back up. Pulled the trigger on 1 MSI 970 Gaming 4G. Will get a 2nd one when I order the rest of the parts for my new build.

Edit: Nevermind. Impulse added the 2nd one now. They aren't going to go down in price over the span of a couple of weeks, and I know they're in stock now.

The design of that looks like it would get crazy hot. Looks cheap or something idk :(
Its a mimic of Nvidia's reference cooler, and no, I wouldn't recommend it. It'd be fine if you don't plan on overclocking whatsoever and simply like the look of it, but otherwise, there's better alternatives for the price.

I ordered the MSI Twin Frozr 970. I actually really didn't want to stick something red in my case(its all black and blue and looks nice), but I'd prefer to have MSI's than EVGA's 970 for the more quiet running. Worth an extra £10 for me.

Should be here on Monday. What would be a good asking price for a MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC? :p Its one of the better 670 models available. I'm thinking £150?

EDIT: Aw shit, problem with my payment. :/ Aarrgh. Want to get one before prices start to go up.

So where does this leave AMD? What's the latest scoop on R9 3xx? Any ETA?
It leaves AMD exactly where the G92 (Geforce 9800 series) left AMD almost six years back.

AMD's GPU in comparison is slower, more power hungry and offers less value (perf+features).

Nvidia upped the performance while going from 384b -> 256b (just like G80 -> G92). Granted there is still probably the big chip coming, this is a very exciting GPU. I'm not sure why people are not more excited. You cant double performance every generation, especially when the node shrinks have basically halted.

The only negative bit I think is the gulf between the 980 and the 970. I think they priced one of them incorrectly. :P 970 is still quite close to 980 and yet the price differential is too large.

urg these Canadian prices. 390 for the EVGA 970, 650 for their 980. Only those and Zotac's cards up on ncix, maybe that's all Canada is getting until next week?

Hoping to be able to walk into Canada Computers and grab a new card, but I don't know what I'm gonna go with just yet.

Just reserved myself an MSI 970, will be picking it up in the morning.

Found out that they also turn the fans off below 50 degrees which I think's a really nice feature. Wonder whether it'll run with just the 8-pin connector like the Asus? Cabling space is at a premium inside my Node 304 and would be handy to be able to do away with one of the PCI-E connectors.

I think they're both good cards, very well priced for the performance they offer. The performance improvement over 780 Ti is small, especially on higher resolutions, but that was to be expected, and the 980 is a much more refined card, while it also seems to overclock very well, which will only improve with the release of non-reference PCBs.

As a 780 Ti owner, there's no need to upgrade, but at least the cards left me very excited for when the "Big chip" drops. Oh, and those of you who are upgrading from the 600-series or earlier, have fun, you're in for quite a ride!

I doubt I'll be overclocking it. I've never felt like I gained enough performance from taking the time out to find stable clock speeds to make it worth my time tbh.

That 970 is really, really tempting, even with my 760 not being a year old yet.

Will have to wait a little and see where this goes aroun The Witcher 3 release date, but a 970 is definetily on my to get list.

That looks like a pretty nice SLI-bridge, mine looks cheap as fuck.

Edit: I would consider EVGA to be one of the better brands from personal experience.

Make sure it is PCIe 3.0 X16 for all slots. May sound stupid, but there is definitely a performance delta from 8x ith cards as powerful as this.

Yeah, I even force 3way SLI in old games like Halo CE so I can crank up the GeDoSaTo even more :P Which 2-way did you have a lot of microstutter in? I have had 8800 GTs, 470s and 570s.

a 9800GX2, the first single card dual chipset thingy. So, I know drivers have improved a lot in just frame pacing since then, but having bought a card that was something like $800 or whatever it was, and having everything feel well below 60 fps (when my framecounter said 60) really soured me on the whole thing.

I'm hoping in older games I'll be downscaling from 4K with dynamic whatever the fuck.

for whatever reasons I seem to buy cards that start with 98. I had the Radeon 9800 too.

In some cases, yes. Overclocked, maybe more (haven't seen any OC 970 benchmarks myself yet).

Beware, it's in German but the nicely oc'd MSI 970 apparently beats a stock 780Ti most of time (Metro LL is the exception) while drawing noticeably less power. http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/gra...est/nvidia_geforce_gtx_970,861,3078382,2.html

I live pretty close to one of the biggest retailers in Germany. I was there in the morning to pick up the Asus model, but they were out of stock. Now they got the EVGAs and I couldn't wait. Anyway, off to "building" now.

What retailer if I might ask? Alternate by any chance?

So the 970 is more powerful than an R9 290 and costs $70 less?

It is also cooler, uses less power, and overclocks incredibly well.

AMD needs to drop prices ASAP.

Both cards cost the same here (€300-350). One shop got a deal and is selling the 290 for €279.99.

I was hoping that the 970 would be a good bit faster than the R9 290. With the non-existent price difference, there's only the power consumption that speaks for the Nvidia card.

Alright, let's do this:
Normally wouldn't have gone with EVGA, but the cards were cheap and in stock. And I am hearing good things about the brand here.

So I guess you picked your set up from Casekings local store? Anyway, very neat, have fun and report back!

E: Alright, just seen your post above ;)

Nvidia's more mature software ecosystem is another feature in their favour.

Mmmm, the 970 sounds fantastic and so much better than the 770 I was looking at a month ago. So glad I waited. Will have to wait until the 30th to buy, as buying on this paycheck would be kinda tight, but as soon as I get off work on the 30th I'm driving my happy ass to TigerDirect and coming home with a 970.

First order of business will be a new playthrough of The Witcher 2. The first time I played that game was on a Bootcamp'd Macbook Pro, running on low settings at 25 fps. Should be a nice upgrade.

Oh geez. As someone who's still using a Radeon 6950, the 970 is tempting even at ~$400 CAD. Is cryptocurrency bullshit going to jack up the price and cause supply shortages, or could I potentially wait for Black Friday/Boxing Day to see if sales pop up?

Best way to sell an MSI 7950 twin Frozr boost? Never sold on eBay and would like to avoid if possible. Would I get £100-150 for it?

You could try GAFs B/S/T thread.

I can't recall Nvidia cards have ever been popular for cryptocurrency mining.

I put my 770 for sale and ordered the Gigabyte G1 970 for 397CHF (424$).

After I get the card I'm going to decide if a order a second one :P

at that price ($329) should I sli 2 970s or just go with the 980? was looking for a great gpu in the 600-650 dollar area...

edit:^brilliant minds man....:)

The MSI 970 is so close to a stock 980 that I don't see any reason to buy one of those considering the price difference. Yep, an overclocked 970 is almost too good.

Is there an amazon link to the MSI 970 twin frozr? Only one I'm setting says they're unavailable. They didn't sell our already did they?
