Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

The price gap is pretty big. I wonder how quickly they'll introduce a 970ti. I don't know if I want to wait though. I like this pricepoint.

You got a Titan and now you're going to the 980? You got money to burn; please give it to me instead. Even I cannot justify that.

I don't know how he feels about his Titan, but I'm glad I'm letting my Titan Black go in favor of a superclocked 980. My Titan is noisy, runs hot and is an extremely poor overclocker. It just doesn't feel right to own it any longer. Again, I'm actually happy to see it go, so it's money well spent in my opinion. :-)

Anybody got a more specific length on the Gigabyte G1 card? My case can have card 29.5cm in length in it without removing a hard drive cage and the Guru3d review literally says it's "like" 29~30. Should I just remove the cage anyway? I have space in the lower hard drive cage for the hdd I'd have to move. If so, I can just unplug the hdd, then move it, and plug it back in right? Does it matter what plug I use?

EDIT: Toms Hardware puts it at 297mm. Well, that hard drive cage is going. I gotta unplug one hdd and then plug it back in in a lower cage, but because of the positioning of the cables I might have to switch them. That won't switch my drive letters or anything will it?

Just move it. Getting HDD cages out of the way of front fans is good in any situation.

I don't think they will introduce a 970 Ti. There's no chip part that makes sense.

Cool cool. Do I have to worry about which connectors I use (like, the top, bottom ones etc) for my HDD? It won't change my drive letter or anything right, just as long as it's connected and has power?

It's quite a bit faster. Just 1 example:

58-75 isn't nothing. And there's more overclock room there...

Here's another. If you're dead set on 60 FPS @ 2560x1440...

48-60.

They aren't Earth-shattering differences, but it's still a good upgrade.

In Greece, the 970 will probably cost 400 euros or something...

I'm still getting this card but i'll probably have to wait for another generation for the prices to drop.

You're part of the EU. Just find a UK retailer that will ship abroad. Overclockers.co.UK, ebuyer.com and scan.co.UK all have cards listed from £260 listed in stock. If there's not a decent option locally you should be able to find one elsewhere in the EU.

Well sure, when you're passively cooling the card 50°C it's good, but I would trade some quiteness for a lower idle temp. My 570 in idle sits at 37°C usually, and it's dead silent.
Do you have a link?

Also, I think, if you don't have a good air flow in your case, you might end up with higher temps than those.

Just don't unplug it from the motherboard as you might have multiple controllers, and you're golden.

@Xyber

lol, good timing. My card for LL was at @~1300 so I guess the results are pretty much in line.

If you haven't checked the highest core clock in GPU-Z you should try that. It will go above what it says the boost clock is in the "Graphics card" tab.

My boost should be at 1453, but it can squeeze out some more thanks to the nice temps.

And I'm incredibly impressed with the temps on this MSI card. At 46% fan speed it's still really quiet.

Oh God, that 980m. If everything is accurate, the power draw, efficiency and nearly 50% performance increase over the 880m are massive. That's nearly a revolution in mobile gaming right there, bearing in mind that my 880m is already fine for Very High settings on most PC games at 1080 (often at 60FPS too).

So buying a laptop with that the second it comes out.

I think I'll stick with the stock setting for now, with the second card enabled I don't foresee any trouble in the near future.

Ah, didn't know you had 2. I'm actually a bit tempted to give that a go myself when I have more money. Never tried SLI before and with the excellent price/performance ratio on these card I might just give it a go.

Wow, 1516? I can't even get my 780 to be stable at 1200 :(

Keep in mind that that's the boost clock. The normal clock is 1314.

Just a tip for people who are considering going sli for VR direct thingy, get the reference model (the blower).

if we see what they did last year with 700 series, I guess they'll put a 6GB Maxwell Titan first then a super duper 980 Ti then we'll get a 6GB 980.

I was planning to do this later down the line but ordered the MSI one for now. Think I'll be good anyway? I never had a SLI or Crossfire running.

It's my first SLI setup too and so far it's been a pleasant experience. The usual Nvidia driver excellence helps. I am sure many more SLI scrubs will follow due to the excellent bang for the buck.

Still waiting for the Evga benchmarks. Curious for the performance difference between the 970 SSC ACX 2.0 and 980 stock. Anyone posted about a review about them yet?

Looks like my EVGA 970 order went though at Amazon, delivery next Wednesday. Should be a decent upgrade over my 7950, but more importantly I'll finally be able to take advantage of CUDA support in After Effects/Premiere.

There doesn't appear to be any reference 970s, there are some blowers but they look really cheap. Are blowers really that important for SLI? These open air coolers seem to provide way more cooling than the cards need. And they're so quiet that even if you have to turn up the case fans a bit I imagine you'll probably have a quieter system overall anyway.

Nah, I'll get most of the mony back by selling the Titan. As I said, it's still expensive here.

I guess when all those rationals are combined they all make a good decision. Thanks for telling me. Though even when looking at those benchmarks, I feel it got to be the sell-off cost that will be the major factor.

Is VR Sli already supported? Did anyone tested 970/980 SLI with DK2? Who knows how good DK2 would work and look with VR Sli + MFAA + DSR. DSR should boost image quality by alot in VR, or?

Here you go:

Tomb Raider TressFX maxed + FXAA

Metro 2033 vanilla:

2033 Redux:

Last Light Vanilla:

2033 vanilla is still a bitch, especially with the advanced DOF enabled. You really need that second card if you want to enable SSAA for the metro games.
Thanks man looks great.

Considering the price of the Titan and then the 980, it's really not a good upgrade. The resale value of the Titan is going to tank now. Who would pay anywhere close to even half for something slower.
