GAF, urgent! I asked before but don't think I got a reply. I'm a hunter. Legendary chest, one away from a full upgrade. I spent 17 coins on the rocket launcher (now replaced with a shotgun...). I have 12 coins that I want to save until next week as i don't care for that chest.

I have 23 motes of light. Do I gamble on the engram, does it HAVE to be a chest? What else are motes used for?

Motes are used at the speaker, who sells class items and emblems. Xur put on exotic chest engrams for two weeks in a row, I think. Note that they might not turn out to be for your class, but it will always be exotic.

It's basically one of the normal strikes but with additional difficulty. You get more enemies of major rank and the only way to revive in the darkness zone is to have someone else revive you. Naturally they'll take a longer time than the normal strikes. Just a bit, depending on your skill.
