DRIVECLUB: 30 minutes of new Beta footage

The GAME that keeps on giving.

Fixed that for you
Every fucking DC thread devolves into shit-posting, concern trolling, 30fps vs 60fps, list-war and useless comparisons thats why am done discussing in any DC thread i just read the op and watch video/gifs if presented then move on.

Below are a number of previous posts of mine that sum up my thoughts on the club functionality, social aspects and grid sizes in/of DC:

I hope that helps explain but if not I'll summarise below.

The social aspect of a racing game for me is all about the online racing. The best way, in my view, to get good online racing is to [assuming a hosted lobby system is available] give lobby hosts good and comprehensive tools to manage races, events, post race incident reviews and lobby members.

Beyond that, I think the small size of clubs will mean that people [like me] with pre-existing groups of racing friends will have to do a little organisation but will be broadly fine in terms of grouping up but new or inexperienced users with no real life or internet racing friends may be left out in the cold.

Is this post directed at me?

No. You're not a junior member!

Yup. I didn't mean to say that I didn't enjoy the occasional open-world "racing" game in certain ways. Forza Horizon was an immensely relaxing experience, just cruising around, enjoying the landscape and such. But the actual racing part > not that great.

This is exactly the type of race I always gravitated towards in racing games in which had a choice (Forza 3, Dirt games etc.). Circuit races tend to bore me after a while due to their lack of interesting scenery (I totally do understand their hardcore appeal though), as do open worlds but in a different way. Point-to-Point races is exactly what I want: drive a car across beautiful landscapes on closed tracks that I can learn and perfect. It's been like for me since back when I played the first Need For Speed, to the time when I fell in love with Burnout 3. After that, closed-track racers kind of vanished apart from the occasional arcade racing game or simulation. I'm really glad that Driveclub became this kind of game. Of course there's still the chance that they mess it up but I doubt it.

*fingers crossed*

(the car selection is bumming me out a little, I have to say but tracks are more imporant to me)

The thing is, I put hundreds of hours into simulation games. Gran Turismo was my most played series on Playstation, and Forza was my most played racer of last Gen. When the PGR studio went out, I had to result back to Forza/GT because there wasn't many worthwhile racing games to me on either console. PGR gave you so many small things to do within the main game which is racing. Forza and GT attempted this, but I think that it fell flat because of the lack of truly arcade like physics. The cone challenges that have been mentioned just gave the game something to fall back on when plain old racing was getting tiring, you also had cat & mouse which was a fucking blast to play on the Nurburgring. What I was trying to ask if Driveclub offered anything else within the game to offer besides club events and other small challenges. I can understand why some people got confused, but I dont understand why my post lead to me getting labeled as a troll, and why my question at the end was ignored. From what I saw in the last few pages, there were only three people who at least tried to address what I was asking, and thank you for at least trying to understand the somewhat readable stuff I put together in the early AM.

Majority of the things said on this forum are opinions, nothing more. I wasn't trying to say Drivecoub sucks or anything like that. I was just wondering what there is about this game besides the graphics which look amazing. I went to the Playstation site, and it was very shallow in details when it came to the different types of game modes. In my mind, this game hasnt been marketed enough if someone can't just look up what the game has to offer in detail which is what I tried to do, but to some of you I completely failed at it.

A member shouldn't be pushed away from a specific section of a forum because they have a few questions. You noticed that I played many racing games, and that should at least help you understand or at least hint that I'm no fanboy of a specific racing game/francise. I'm going to be purchasing a new console either XB1 or PS4 because I'm interested in getting into racing games again. I'm not trying to start problems with the thread, my main goal was to try and learn more about the game that is being presented and sure, there was some bad structure in the post, but picking it apart and analyzing it like it was a final thesis should have never happened.

I'm only glad that some discussion came after the past few pages that seemed to have some people mad for whatever crazy reasons.

Also, I typed this on my phone so try to excuse some errors if there are any.

Monaco and Singapore GP circuits shall henceforth be known as Monaco and Singapore GP Corridors.

Nelson Piquet* once actually described driving a racing car at Monaco as like "riding a bicycle round your living room" so clearly we now have someone to blame for originating this thing.

No. You're not a junior member!

Am I not? Oh well, seems there was some upshot from my posting then. : )

For clarity, I was referencing the first part of your post.

There are 15 unique "round-courses" in the game. (2 road circuits + 1 race track) X 5 countries. Breakdown and explanation here

You can set number of laps up to 25.

Don't know if you can chain races together, would be cool if that's possible.

Damn, I didn't know that! Awesome!

And...

I believe people will be amazed by the handling of the cars. After almost completing the single player campaign, I must say, that apart from the closed circuits and cosmetic vehicle damage this is much more of a Gran Turismo than e.g. Need for Speed: Rivals handling wise.

I just spent two hours trying to achieve one of the lap time challenges and I'm not new to racers. The latter challenges on the single player Tour are challenging, but it all comes down to you. You really need to drive great and handle your revs to keep some of the cars in control.

Because, as has been pointed out to you, if you had spent 10 minutes skim reading the last few pages of the thread, you would have seen that your question - especially the bit about point A-B racing, had already been offered as a an 'argument' by 3 drive-by posters.

Anyway, the body text of my last post, in case you missed/ignored it:

55 races, spread over 5 locales (India, Chile, Scotland, Norway, Canada) with 2 P2P, 2 racing circuits & 1racetrack. The P2P & circuits each have a reverse course and the racetracks 3 different routes. (The PS+ version is Ibdia only - so only 11 race types)

Environmental effects include being Abbie to select both time of day and the speed of the day/night cycle. This will be complemented by weather effects later in the year which, it us promised, will have a substantial impact on racing. Again, this weather is customisable, so you could have a race that starts at dusk in sunshine, goes through a howling blizzard overnight to conclude with a dazzling daybreak with the snow turning to slush.

Racing is based around winning points for your club. These are amassed by winning races, driving cleanly, and attempting in-race challenges such as drifting, racing line, top speed and so on. All points amassed by your club are shared and you all get new car unlocks. You cam also score individually I the SP game so if you leave a club you don't lose your shiny Pagani.

Alongside SP & MP challenges in the game, it is possible for clubs & individuals to create their own races and challenges within those races, and lay down those challenges for rival club members to participate in.

Initially there are 50 cars (10 in PS+) which will be expanded by 38 over the next 12 months (8 for PS+ only). There will also be additional tracks, races and new types of SP challenge. PS+ only get all the additional track content for the India location. All this available via paid DLC.

Finally there will also be a photo mode, which alongside the weather, will be available to all DC players.

I suspect that if Cat & Mouse isn't offered as a default challenge could probably make a race or race section based on it.

So what's the difference between racetrack events and circuit events?

You'll have to excuse me, this is basically me right now:

14105986583896.jpg

Road circuits are formed from cordoned-off loops of normal road. Racetracks are purpose-built racing circuits.

To use a (purely illustrative) comparison to that other racing franchise, road circuits are like a circuit out of Horizon, while racetracks are like a circuit out of Motorsport.

Point-to-points are (I'm assuming, anyway) a non-looping section of regular road (may or may not have shared sections with the road circuits, that much hasn't been made clear).

This game really does need custom soundtracks. The lack of music in the various videos is a little off-putting (I know you can turn in-game music on through a menu somewhere), and I want to get my own tunes going too. Racing games are literally the only genre where I like and use custom music.

But then how will you know how fast you want to go?

What's the difference between the P2P races and the racetracks?

Point to Point

Racetrack

ef30cc3d3a7c3bd286d416aa9d75630c.png

This would be the most boring track in the history of racing games if it existed.

Basically, one races to a destination, one has multiple laps at the same place. P2P races usually take place in heat races instead of laps, and P2P are really useful for timetrials which is why they're used in rally a-lot.

So what's the difference between racetrack events and circuit events?

Baltimore Grand Prix is a road circuit.

They took the streets and cordoned it off so that it's suitable for racing, another track that they've done somewhat similar is Nurburgring, but I think that there could be some arguments whether it's mainly a race track or a public road which it still is if I'm not mistaken.

Suzuka is a purpose built race track.

This should be correct, someone correct me if I am wrong somehow.

Its kinda sorta Le Mans-ish.

Never knew the distinction between track and circuit, but in general I find circuits to be boring visually. That's one of the main things that draws me to a game like DriveClub, especially one that tries to keep the technical aspect of the driving intact. Gimme a deep driving model with various conditions (visibility, surface types) and beautiful scenery and I'm so in.

I would love that visually, but practically... trying to drive a supercar in those conditions is like trying to drive one through a corn field.

Ha..! , been tempted to post the missing vehicle selection in forza horizon, specifically crop harvester, tractor, cultivator, seed drill... When it comes to plowing cornfields I like my comprehensive gameplay to cover all facets of agricultural production.

Point to Point

Racetrack

My bad, I worded that question completely wrong. I know what P2P races are, who doesn't? The reason I asked the difference between P2P and racetracks was because I, for some reason, thought they were the same thing, but with P2P only having you on the track. I thought to myself "there are no purpose built racetracks in DC, so it must mean something else in this game". Lmao.

Note to self: Don't smoke and internet at the same time.

So, I've been trying to play some more racers to get ready for Driveclub. I bought Sonic All Stars Transformed and was taken by how fast of a game it was. I mean, I play Burnout and Wipeout, but I was not expecting that out of Sonic.

It just got me really hyped for the sense of speed in DriveClub. People have already commented on this and you can see it in the videos.

I just can't stop thinking about the thrill of a racing game that just gets the speed right, and Driveclub really looks like it is nailing that heart pumping experience. It's going to be nice to play a game with the artstyle/environments of DC with a real sense of speed.

I don't know how people can say they don't know what the game is about and the dev hasn't been straightforward when there are videos like this which quite clearly show exactly what the game is about. There were also Driveclub Explained clips talking about specific aspects of the game like how clubs and skill points work.

Point is, it's useless people saying "I don't really know what this game is about" when you're expecting to be spoon-fed the information. It's out there, it's not hard to find if you just stick your head out from threads that appear on gaming forums and actually look.

Omg just a few more weeks now guys we are so close!!! I'd call dibs but I lost my thread creation ability's a looong time ago. Wish I could get those back :(

So, I've been trying to play some more racers to get ready for Driveclub.....

I've been thinking of playing Need For Speed The Run.... it seems to have similar environment settings to DriveClub.... I bought it while back for like $5 at Best Buys. Graphics looked good when my brother played it, and it seemed to control alittle different than other racers.

never really put no time into it...so gotta dust off the o'l PS3.

edit- reminds of DriveClub

Who is making the OT anyway?
I can't quite remember, but it was all allocated in the OT OT, which I think is under Gaming Community?

I've asked whoever called dibs (I know he created some awesome other OTs, so relax... it's in good hands :) ) about the thread title... I think that's all sorted ;)

PGR4 if you have a 360, Midnight Club LA if you don't. Both great games.

Which one?

"Jim, where the hell is the uncompressed DRIVECLUB video? We promised GAF we'd get it to them ages ago!"

"Ahhh shit, I knew I was forgetting something today! And yesterday. And last week."

"Carol, they're foaming at the mouths! They keep bumping the fucking thread, making people think the video's actually been posted! Can you get to the office and upload the video? "

skeleton+in+car.JPG

"No can do, boss, got a costume party to go to and I'm totally lost. I printed out a page from Mapquest but I think it just printed Mapquest's sidebar. I guess I'm just not good with technology and-"

skeleton-in-car.png

"BOB! DRIVECLUB VIDEO! CAN YOU UPLOAD IT?"

skeleton-in-the-car.jpg

"Already done boss. Uploaded it to YouTube in 240p so I can watch it on my iPod Video. Tried to upload it to IGN too, but they said 240p was too much for their player to handle."

skeleton-in-car.png

"GOD DAMNIT! ERIC! ERIC! BUDDY! PLEASE TELL ME YOU UPLOADED THE UNCOMPRESSED FOOTAGE BEFORE YOU LEFT THE OFFICE TODAY!"

TOozod3.jpg

"Uh, I didn't, but I think Carl did. He's carpooling with me and Rick, hold on, I'll ask him. Hey Rick, did Carl upload the uncompressed video before we left today?"

"Naw man, he said he couldn't see a difference."
We've come a long way.

Can't decide between digital and retail. The $10 digital discount is tempting though.
What's everyone else doing?
Going digital this gen + $10 discount = easy decision.
*points at cobweb covered skeleton of gaffer who died while waiting for the first direct feed footage*
I prefer the word intestinal myself.
And #DRIVECLUB is very intestinal. Just look at it.
Son of a bitch, lol.
*whistles*

$50 no tax digital > $80 total CND retail.

When are we going to see the TV spot? I really hope to see some solid advertising since this is Sony's only big PS4 exclusive title for Christmas

Hoooooly shit. Y'all remember this?

We've come a long way.

lol . that was fun. But def worth the wait. And all the people saying evo doenst do vertical slices well and to wait the graphics will turn out good were so on point. The game looks godlike now.

I feel like a lot of Sony's studios are like that, except ND and SSM (their games looked like finished products even when shown a year before release).

I'm left wondering where they are saving power? Most of what you see seems to be legit, no trickery.
I assume you mean rendering resources. Remember, all graphical techniques are essentially "trickery", but the older way of doing things can be much more costly in comparison to the visuals in Driveclub (and games like Ryse), a lot of which comes down to the newer shaders, ram available, and ability to calculate lighting passes fast enough for global solutions.

Physically based rendering is a nice part of this, yielding greater results on-screen with less development overhead as far as matching assets, since they all work in-tandem with lighting engine. After that, an aggressive yet invisible LOD system can help too, such as rendering the clouds and not at the most accurate or detailed manner until you're right up in it.

It also helps, fundamentally, that a lot of the massive maps are repeated chunks, like pieces of trees, mixed up together to get unique results that don't appear to repeat like old texture tiling, and so much of it doesn't require collision for the player and AI cars (though they fill the tracks with a lot of nice details, like tons of flamingos each with simple AI routines)
