I spent 18 ascendant shards last night and didn't get a level. The grind to 29 is real.

You need to max out everything and it has to be 3 legendaries and one 1 exotic to hit 29 without raid gear. You will make it over the level requirement by exactly 1 point I think.

I hit 29 and my helmet is one from being maxed out. My exotic chest, legendary boots and gauntlets are maxed, though.

Is this a thing?
Uh. Right now you need raid gear to hit 30. I don't know about the thesis of his point exactly, for all we know they could raise the soft cap rather than the hard which would allow people at 28 to "XP their way" to 30. no idea.
I hope so. Cuz I don't think I'll ever hit 29 or 30 otherwise.
You can and will hit 29 without any raid gear/lucky drops given enough longitudinal time or dedication.

Did they turn up the frequency of how often you get higher end loot?

Up til now I haven't gotten anything good and then last night I ended up with a Legendary Zombie Apocalypse machine gun, an Exotic rocket launcher that I can't remember the name of, and the Exotic Universal Remote shotgun.

One of them I got as an engram from turning in a bounty, one I got as a Crucible reward, and the other I got as a pickup during a patrol mission.
i think so, i've had more and better drops lately (finally).

WOOH! I just got 2 purple engrams from levelling up the Cryptach to level 15 and I decrypted them for two purple weapons!

Steel Oracle Rocket Launcher and 77 Wizard Fusion rifle. Nice shit.
I have the 77 Wizard and love it, the range is insane.

holy crap :(

Oh it'll happen. Don't know when, but like I said, it happens in any MMO that Destiny is taking after.

Granted, the gear that comes out to serve this purpose may be worse than the raid gear in perks, but they should have the same amount of light to get people to 30.

Just finished the raid. I got shards, the titan mark, the shader again, and the vision of confluence scout rifle that does solar damage.

No, but you do actually get strung along. You get that subpar legendary every so often, and aspire to get something better.

Here you don't even get that. You get a blue, and another blue, and more blues and then maybe a subpar legendary after 3-4 hours lol. They failed with the carrot on a stick.

I think the best way to describe how I feel about Destiny is they took good core gameplay and then the worst parts of loot games and MMOs, like timegates and crazy RNG, and left out the things that make those okay. Tons of RNG is fine, but you tease people by making them feel like they got something nice frequently along the way.(Or have it be a low drop rate from a specific target. Having a 1/1000 chance of getting a special weapon that only comes from a certain boss is more bearable, because at least you feel like you're trying).

I definitely agree they took the worst parts of the genres... I don't understand why they thought reps, dailys, caps, etc were great ideas that needed to be repeated. Drives me crazy that you can only carry 5 bounties at once, oh and if you have an exotic bounty you have to wait for Xur for (like I do) have fun only being able to carry 4!

That being said, I do feel like I get upgrades (mostly from buying them with marks now). I'm sure there is at least a 1/1000 chance of getting good loot in Destiny too haha ;). I still am driven to play to get upgrades, I just realize most of them will come from purchases with marks/motes/coins, not from drops. I did get a nice legendary scout rifle from a blue engram... and blues from pretty much every legendary engram like everyone else lol. Good drops are in nightfall and the raid, so they definitely are out there!

Nightfall strike boss makes a nice backdrop.
Kudo's to doomquake for jumping up to where I was to res me! :P

ftfy, lol

you understand there are no queen's gauntlets or boots right? there's a helm, chest, sniper rifle, and ship

Sniper Rifle would have been nice.

But man fuck this. I love my Hand Cannon but there is nothing to do with it. I can be LV29 if I want. I know that if I GOT Raid gear I could instead Max out two of them. Fuck this man

Why don't you have the legendary helmet/chest from the Queen's missions? They are good.

I can't figure out how to do those? It seems like you have to do the bounties to get the thingy to do the missions or something? Most of the Queen's bounties are not ones I can do, like sniper rifle headshots in Crucible or whatever, that's just impossible at my (lack of) skill level.

EDIT: also I just googled it and the Queen's Wrath missions are level 24, so therefore they're by definition impossible until I get more Light.

True. I have all legendary now (closest thing to relying on RNG was doing the Queen's bounty) at level 26, and I can get an exotic this weekend. Hate farming upgrade materials though. I'm mostly interested in just getting a bunch of legendary/exotic weapons to play around with. I have a few but not exactly what I want.

It is not viable for you to rely because they want you to buy stuff. This is your hang-up, not the game's. You want it to be something it's not. You might as well complain about this game not being in 3rd person. It is not a problem that you can't rely on drops because there are alternate systems that you're supposed to be using.

Can you imagine how much more broken the loot cave would be if you could rely totally on drops? Everyone would be fully geared in 5 minutes. Loot drops are bad because of the loot cave. Because of exploits like it where people can get a zillion drops with no effort.

No They dont. One things that bungie was saying about this game before it was release was how each gear was different and that they wanted the player to tell the story on how to got it. Me grinding bounties and doing patrol for hours is not a great story is it.
And why would I care If the loot cave was broken ? It wouldnt hurt my experience with the game.

I'm on the fence about if raid gear drops need to rely on RNG. Prizes like the ship can remain RNG, but what you need to level light? I can't decide on what I think.

In one hand, it makes sense to have RNG considering we can't trade anything and there's no die roll system implemented. At the same time, you'd think the raid would be more rewarding to people returning to do it again and getting better at it. I'm going to be upset if I get more boots.

There is one that is "recover 200 ether drops off fallen on any planet" that is very easy. All enemies you kill in PVE will drop a little, and you'll get it over time. The crucible ones are the harder ones unless it happens to be the weapon you're adept with.

What are we all going to do when a nightfall boss can't be cheesed? Might be near impossible people under level 27/28.

Got a total of 5 Queen Masks and 6 Chest Pieces.

LMAO

I have enough ass shards to fully max out every piece of Raid gear I need thanks to those Queen helms and chest pieces lol

Use that scout rifle in the Nightfall strike, it made it a hell of a lot easier for me.

I see where you're coming from now. I personally fucking loathe this style of "reward" and RNG never, ever, ever seems to favor me among my friends in these scenarios. By the nature of probability (if unweighted behind the scenes), the fact that it's a 1 in 1000 roll, each time, not a sequential (raffle) draw, means that I could do it 1001 times without getting that special weapon. It doesn't make me feel like I'm trying; it makes me feel like I'm failing, and not making any progress.

I'm not looking forward to having to rely on RNG again to get raid gear to get from 29 to 30. Being familiar with my luck at these things, it will probably take me a very long time. But Destiny has enabled me to progress further and more consistently without needing to rely on RNG at all than many, many other games.

Yeah but then the actual Queen's missions themselves are level 24? so like doesn't that mean I can't do them anyway?

WoW does it perfectly fine. Boss has guaranteed gear drops and currency drops and a fixed loot table. There is a chance for some one to get gear, guaranteed chance for currency for everyone that gives them access to raid level gear after a lengthy grind.

You know exactly what you can get from the boss, you know that you can get something from a boss kill eventually.

Edit: I think the problem with destiny is that strikes and cryptarch just set a bad precedent. Even if the RNG is stacked in favor of the players, by the time you get to raiding everyone is tired of that shit.

You can reroll if you don't like the mission you get. The earth one is fast and definitely doable solo. You probably want to be at or near level 24 though.

May as well do them though just in case you get enough light. Not sure if the tokens will disappear when the Queens event is done but there definitely is still some time before it ends! Guaranteed legendaries are good stuff. Honestly you probably would be ok to do some of the easier ones around 23ish. Keep getting those marks and rep too.

Can you explain more about what WoW does? The only MMO I ever got deep into was The Old Republic (bleh) and did pretty much all the hardest raids/operations in endgame until Bioware started focusing on player housing. I'm sure TOR takes after WoW with endgame gear though. Each boss would drop a token people would roll for. The winner would take this token to a vendor and exchange it for endgame gear. The boss would also drop random pieces of endgame gear that wasn't as good as the one you'd get with the token, but it was good enough to get stronger so you could keep doing raids until you got that token.

Yea go earth every time. So simple. On one occasion it may have taken me 15 times to reset. Moon ain't bad but longer process. Go earth.

Seriously. Seems almost impossible for a really competent team of level 28.
No way. Come on. The strikes aren't that hard and you'll have an elemental burn. The cheesy strategies are useful and even crucial when you're underleveled/undergeared or carrying others, but they'll all be doable legit at baseline.

.........okay maybe not Phogoth. Fuck those wizards in their whatever wizards have.

I agree, Raid gear should not rely on RNG at all. I've been through it twice and all I've gotten is gauntlets. Weapons and other shit can stay as RNG, but armour gear should always drop. I'm sick and tired of getting ass shards, I don't need anymore of that shit Bungie.

Does anyone know exactly what "Additional resources are now granted for completing City tasks in any destination" implies?

The whole Grimoire progress cards confuse me. Completions =/= Rank status? Strikes are just as confusing; I've got 44 strikes under my belt according to the main Legend page (but only "32 Activities Cleared", wth does THAT mean??) but the card says I've got 14/50 to just get complete Level 1. I feel like we need a guide just to learn how the cards are supposed to read.

Bungie was world class with their Halo stats, charts, and graphs, but their work on Destiny seems like a big stumble backward. :-|
