Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Any expectations/speculation for how well these new cards will run the likes of Witcher 3 and GTA5? I'm having a hard time resisting the upgrade urge. Those 970 prices are so tempting, but I'd kick myself if the two games I'm looking forward to most didn't get 60fps with/near max settings. Still, at that price point... Argh.

Impossible to know for sure. My guess is that a single 970 won't be up for the task, maybe a 980.

I got it super cheap in a sale a while back. It was like 3€ or something, so figured I might as well get it.

But you can get the demo and run the normal fire strike benchmark. Just not the extreme.

Oh cool, didn't know that, thanks for the info. I'll probably just do that and wait for a sale then.

the normal one will still benefit from SLI right? I know the extreme is aimed at SLI setups, so I wasn't sure.

Guys, I'm flipping the fuck out. Installed my 970. Everything is great. I've never downsampled before but decided to try it with that new DSR thingy in the GeForce Experience and...holy shit.

I can never go back. I'm in love. This card...

DSR is laughably easy to use. I can't believe it just dumps extra resolutions into a games options. Downsampling went from annoying/needing a mod or impossible to trivial.

I'd bet that no single GPU solution is going to run the game at 1080p 60 with AA and all details maxed.

I'm very anxious to try it out with my 970. I never even bothered trying to mess with it with my current 7970.

Have we had an official word if this is coming to the 7 series (have a regular 780)? I've heard it fixes the issues with having multiple monitors so I want it so bad @.@

Don´t know where to ask. What is the inferior model to these 2 and how does it fare for 1080p gaming?

I went with PS4 early and plan to build one at the end of 2015.

I got a somewhat unexpected bonus from work coming up, and the 970 suddenly became very affordable to me.

Thoughts on upgrading from a GTX 590? I really kind of hate it, the dual-GPU setup is clearly less than ideal. Thanks!

What do you mean?

I assume you have a G-sync monitor and never owned a AMD card before and will never switch from NVIDIA again otherwise you make no sense.

I do not have G-SYNC monitor but I will stick to Nvidia unless they screw up.
So this is a non issue for me.
I don't see anything wrong with Nvidia sticking to their tech.

Nvidia not going to support VESA Adaptive Sync

I think my boner just died a little.

I'm going to be forced to a company's GPU whenever I want to upgrade in the future depending on what monitor I have? G-Sync monitors are horribly overpriced currently.

This is HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray all over again. This anti-consumer nonsense needs to end a standard needs to be established sooner rather than later.

...
nvidia are never going to change are they

Nvidia screws up all the time. Locked voltage anyone?

I go back and forth between Nvidia and AMD, and find it to be a shame that my next monitor purchase (whenever that is) might dictate what GPU I can/can't buy.

Here's my take on it. The 970 will run those games better than my 660ti without any doubt. I don't see any other cards in the same price to performance ratio coming out anytime in the next year so the 970 will give me the best experience for my money. It may not be maxed out, but it will be far better than what I have now for a reasonable amount of money.

My 980 is now waiting for me at home. I'm giddy like a 12 year old at christmas. :)

Mordor looks to be the game that I will break it in on.

Do you have to turn it on anywhere or does it just appear in games?

You go into the Nvidia control panel and just enable the resolutions you want to appear in games. It tricks the games into thinking you have a monitor that supports them.

As long as the game itself supports resolutions that high, theyll just appear in the game settings wherever you choose resolution.

Got my MSI 970 this afternoon. Short PSA ahead: don't use AMDs driver cleaning utility. I thought it would be good to use to get rid of more than what the uninstall routine of Catalyst does but well. It fucked up the USB drivers and Windows wouldn't recognize mouse / keyboard and any other USB devices. Luckily I just could hit a switch in my BIOS to make them work again but I can't use USB3 right now so I gotta go figure out how to fix this without reinstalling my OS... be even more cautious if you use an AMD board since apparently it will also corrupt your SATA drivers. Blargh.

Anyway, on #TeamGreen now. Card is super silent, driver panel is day and night in comparison to AMD. Let's see what this bad boy can do.

I'm new to downsampling and not sure if it works on specific titles, how to qualify, etc... However, I booted up RE4 at 4k and this is the result.

The RE4 shots actually had a problem with fraps. Fixed it.

Here is a DS shot at 4K of DMC4. It looks great in motion.

Cool shots. Most games will probably have an option for it right in the game, new or old. It's just the few games that already enforced arbitrary resolution caps that will pose a problem, like MGS Revengance. Some of the older games made before the time of proper HUD scaling might be pretty hard to play too, unless you have a magnifying glass available whenever you need to check your health.

Reinstalling your motherboard chipset drivers should fix the usb3 issue.

Strange problem here...

Just tried out Watch Dogs and maxed everything (borderless windowed). The game ran at 35-40 FPS on average. That's not so strange though. But the graphics card was not even fully used. I had precision x open on the other monitor and it was @ 60°C max with ~ 80 to 90% usage. It even downclocked every now and then lol. What's causing this?

I recommend DDU in safe mode over the AMD cleaning utility for both AMD/Nvidia driver cleaning in advance of a switch.

Watchdogs is a hot mess of a PC game. Poorly optimized, very CPU dependent. What CPU do you have?

What's causing it is that Watch Dogs is a *terrible* port. It's a complete mess and they never fixed it.

Awesome. Never down sampled before but it's be silly not to when it's this easy and I have SLI 970s :)

I have a hard time understanding why they wouldn't. Couldn't just lead to more people buying their GPUs?

I understand why NVIDIA is doing it but it doesn't change the fact that it's anti-consumer.

Look how many people in this very thread went from an AMD card to this card. If nothing changes in the future you (not any of you specifically) might be forced to buy the worse/more expensive card due to your monitor. You can't predict the future but you might have to now.

Probably asked a thousand times: best 970? I don't care about sound. Performance and heat management is what I look for.

Just ordered a EVGA gtx 980 SC from amazon. Hope they come back in stock soon, I bought a r9 290x back in may, so I'm just gonna sell this one on ebay or something. These new gtx cards are very promising and the price is fucking great. Can't wait to get one, I have shadows or mordor pre ordered too, but I doubt I'll get my gpu by then :(.

Should just be a driver download: intel usb 3

Appreciate your help guys! Will try to get this done now.
Yeah, in the various threads I've been looking through, DDU was recommended as well. Will use this next time (hopefully not too soon :D). Cheers!

Gigabyte has the lowest heat and keeps up with or exceeds the other cards.

The only reasons to consider other cards are either for price (GB is more expensive), or for MSI/ASUS passive mode.

Nvidia making the most of their tech. It's great to see G-SYNC vs Adaptative Sync. :)
The best solution will win and we will have to adapt, I'm 100% fine with this.

Hey, as long as the winning tech becomes universal I don't care. But I can't remember if any NVIDIA exclusives later came to AMD?

nice case. Is that the Cosmos S? That's the one I have, and I love it.

My cards are out for delivery, and someone is at my house ready to sign for them.

So, things are looking good right now and I hope to have pictures later of my finished build. Fingers still tightly crossed.

Its the original Cosmos I love it, nice clean look and appropriately HUGE. Grats on the new Card yourself, be sure to post pics when it comes in.

Got mine installed last night. No problems at all moving from AMD to Nvidia. Roughly doubled my performance across the board judging from all my installed games with benchmark tools. I'm happy.

Do people recommend using the EVGA Precision tool for EVGA cards? AMD actually had decent and easy fan control and overclocking built right into their standard drivers, so Nvidia's are a bit barebones in comparison on that front.

Well, it's not like an AMD card will make your G-sync monitor useless. It'll still be a great 120/144/whatever hz monitor with low latency and the like.

Having a g-sync monitor will make Nvidia more of a value than just raw performance though and might sway you in a close race later card generations. It's an effective strategy. Nvidia has looked at adding more values to their cards beyond just FPS for quite awhile.

It' might be great in five years, but right now it completely sucks. No G-Sync monitor exists that suits my needs and the prices are sky-high because it's not open tech.

With SLI 970s I can't load the Geforce Experience on Windows 8.1 it just goes to a black window. I also can't change the 3D settings in the control panel it just freezes.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any ideas?
