I'm happy to be able to finally play them in stereoscopic 3D. City worked in 3D very briefly on AMD cards using the 3rd party TriDef software, until an update to the game broke it completely. On Nvidia, not only is it not broken at all, but there are 3D versions of all of the cutscenes which are video files which never worked with AMD cards.

I ordered mine on the 20th, I got a delivery estimate today on the 30th, it still hasn't shipped and I selected one-day shipping. Kinda wondering if I should cancel it. Was going to run 2 980s in SLI but but now we have VRAMgate happening lol.

Granted I will be only using one 970 (compared to your 3 980s) but I'm only playing at 1080p. Still should be a good improvement in these games over the 7970 I still currently have.

Received my 970 today. Installed it and the first thing I did after installing the drivers and rebooting was looking at GPU-z just because:
Isn't the Pixel Fillrate lower than it should show it as?
Perhaps because you are on PCI-E 2.0 instead of 3.0

I have a question for the smart people out their. The memory compression technique they've been talking about that decreases the required memory bandwidth,does that also decrease the required memory usage as well?

Nope, that's what you get at stock. Mine is 42.5 with overclock. Perhaps it might be showing wrong (don't know if that's low or anything), but that's what we all have now.
Hmm UK release might not be so close/on time...I'd end up with 2 cards I'll want to upgrade again ha.

What if we want to play at higher resolutions than 1080p (which looks like shit on my monitor) - it's no longer about omg futureproofing max ultra - but simply trying to play on high and you can't - not because it can't power it - it just can't accommodate.

Can always wait for something better, endless cycle. I went from 670 sli to 970 sli and don't regret it one bit. If the price is tight, you gotta make it right!

32 ROPs per clock. Looks right to me. You're probably confusing pixel fillrate and the texel fillrate next to it.
I can't fault anyone for buying those 970s. The price/performace on those is incredible.
This is mainly geared towards the people on the 700 series.

Stayed up way later than I should have installing my new motherboard and 970. Incredibly hyped to dive into all the games I previously couldn't run at playable settings.
The PCI lanes are "clocked" down when there is no load.
honestly i'm super annoyed by this...
just built my PC three months ago, and even with my 780ti classy i was wingeing about this VRAM issue back then.
now i want to upgrade [probably to two 980s in SLI], but can't justify doing it because of the low VRAM - why so rock & hard place PC? WHY?

I just purchased an additional MSI 670 PE off another gaffer who is upgrading to a 970... I'm going to hold out on maxwell for the time being in hopes that SLI 670 PE, will get me through the year. Though, the Witcher 3 may for my hand in February.

Really tempted to get a 970 but not being very clued up with hardware, I hope someone could advise if it would be worth it with my current set up.

Why would you want to upgrade from a i7 990 XE? That CPU is still good. I got a i7 975 XE and not hitting any bottlenecks as far as I know.
Overclock your CPU a bit if you can and save the money for a new GPU.

Not sure. I'm upgrading from a 660 Ti, which is a bit behind the 760. Be crazy like me and upgrade too for the 4GB VR or wait for cards with more RAM if you're patient.

Being a noob to overclocking a GPU, how does this fair? any pointers? Temps were around 60-62'c. Should I dial it back a little?
Heh. Anything under 80 and I feel like I'm fine. Though I haven't seen my 980 get hotter than 72.

Logically, no. Compression is for transport, to use an item it has to be decompressed.
The trick is to get a compression / decompression algorithm that doesn't negate the time saved by transporting smaller amounts of data.
But once it's on the other end it is decompressed. Analgoy is: emailing a zip file uses less bandwidth than emailing uncompressed files, but it doesn't change the space those files take up once you want to actually use them on the other end.
In GPUZ you can click on the question mark rigth to the Bus Interface field and have the explanation.
In short, because of the power saving modes of some GPU, to have the correct reading of the bus you need to have these GPU under a minimum load.

Bah. My SLI cards broke 80 easily and stayed stable... but yeah, obviously by bye boost clocks at those temperatures.
My system does this, although it shows in GPU-Z as going from 2.0 to either 1.0 or 1.1.
