I don't expect all games to run that well, but... damn.

so what should temps be at when playing a game? i was playing Ethan carter and it was around 60-65 on the 970 SSC.

i only ask because my 670 was almost never higher then 55 (granted i had sort of an aggressive fan curve set for that.)

UK gaf is £110 a good price to sell my used MSI gtx 670 power edition OC 2gb gddr5, it's still in perfect condition and is boxed with all of the original accessories, etc. Also what's the best place to sell it? Ebay? Gumtree?
If anyone here is interested in buying PM me please.

Are you using FRAPS to get the screens or something else? FRAPS crashed for me every time I took a screenshot when I was using DSR.

Such a beautiful game.

Quick question: What are the metal bits at the back of a GPU that connect to the rear of a PC called?

I replaced my two GTX 560 Ti's with a single GTX 970, so now I have a rectangular hole at the back of my case where the second card went =P Presumably I can get hold of one of those metal... things, with no card attached, to block the hole, but I have no idea what they're called!

My EVGA 980 SC runs up to 81C under load. But my fan speed only goes up to 55%. Is the fan speed kind of low or is this normal? I did tried manual fan adjust and brought my temp down to 70C under load but my fan goes up to 70% and it gets noticeably loud. I live in Los Angeles if it matters.

expansion slot covers, I guess?

Shit, I just remembered that I don't know if I have any extras. My current card takes up 3 slots and its replacement will only take up 2. I might have left my extras behind when I moved.

They're called 'PCI (E) Expansion Slot Covers'. It's not a huge deal to leave it open unless you think it's negatively effecting the airflow of your case. If you get some off say ebay, make sure it fits your case.

So my EVGA GTX 970 has been performing fine, and noise hasn't been much of an issue. For the hell of it, I decided to take a look at the reviews it's been getting.

...and uh, wow, did I get lucky or something? I haven't been having the issues others are having.
Mine works perfectly fine. Running around 1450mhz core on stock. Don't find a need to push it yet. A few hours ago I was playing Witcher 2 on ultra settings @ 60fps/1080p.

I guess the fans make a little noise but if I listen to moonlight sonata on my speakers, it's drowned out. Most of those reviews are just regurgitating forum complaints.

My Evga 970 SC ACX 1.0 arrived on Tuesday - I'm still a bit miffed about the ACX 2.0 / 1.0 split, but decided to crack open the box and give the card a try since 970s seem pretty sold out elsewhere and I don't want to pay another shipping / restock fee.

Anyways - seems like a great card! I haven't had a high end-ish card in a long time, but fan noise is minimal, especially after setting it to "quiet" fan curve in EVGA Precision. I messed around with overclocking a bit, but had some crashes after an hour of ~1500mhz with Shadow Warrior on Ultra (generally 90-120fps). Idle fan temp ~44, max on load ~70.

There is coil whine though - this is my first experience with it and it isn't noticable in games as long as I have sound or headphones on. Where it rears its ugly head is editing in Unreal 4 or Unity when the room is quiet - I can audibly hear some fuzz whenever I move the viewport in either engine. Sounds almost like a pencil on paper. No where near as bad as some of the coil-whine youtube videos though.

TLDR; pretty happy with my EVGA 970 SC ACX 1.0. Fans and temps aren't an issue, coil whine is there but only noticeable in really quiet times when I'm doing non-game 3d work. Keeping it.

BTW, thanks to PCPer's EVGA stream today, here's some good news about EVGA 970s - their new BIOS will make them semi-passive at temps below 60C (IIRC).

What's the process like in upgrading bios for eVGA cards? I haven't had one in years, is it something you flash yourself or does their precision software do it?

I'm not accustomed to coil wine but I'm not hearing anything out of the ordinary. I recently replaced my CPU fans with nice quiet low db Scythes. So now my loudest component is my 150gb raptor. I barely hear the GPU and it's out in the open, not cased in. I'm now on #teamquiet, catching up on the times but won't go ssd till probably next year sometime with Haswell.

I used to be up in arms about small issues like the reported ones but time goes on... Not going to spend hours ranting about losing 1-3fps and am OK not risking crashes by keeping things simple. I also only see the latest "6gb" controversy or whatever as a good thing. I first don't believe the concern for a second but in addition, it only adds value to titles. What do we do when we play an older title? Mods and down-sampling. I welcome titles going above the threshold so that in the future we can flip a switch and not rely on custom intervention. Just my two cents.

Also haven't gamed this heavily with the PC in quite some time and feeling the sting of lack of space. Games like Wolfenstein at 50gb? I'm having to install it on a 7200rpm and bite the bullet on load times. I'm not sure if you guys got ~500gb SSDs but modern titles sure fill up the smaller lower capacity drives of previous years.

EDIT:
Just watched a coil whine UT video of the 970. Haven't heard it but I'm 60fps.

I came to this thread specifically for this reason... i was browsing, found it in stock, and got so excited i pulled the trigger without doing enough research. Its in transit now and I decided to look up reviews for this specific card and started panicking. So how has your experience been with it overall? I'm hoping to get one without any issues.

If a brother can get an 8GB GTX 970 for $400-$430, it might be worth it, but anything higher than that and I'll just stick to my High setting and call it quits.
$400+ is stretching into high end pricing and I'm not really trying to get into that. If I can save $75-100 just by turning the texture setting from Ultra to Very High/High in games(usually hardly noticeable), that's no problem for me.

I know people are worried about 4GB RAM at the moment, but I'm really not. Hell, I wasn't gonna worry too much about 2GB, so long as everything still looked good. What matters is the end product, not how high my sliders are slid.

Just got my 970 windforce and shit sounds like a rattle snake, I am dissapointed....

edit: Also I'm getting no audio through HDMI...

Huh weird, figured everyone was seemingly behind the windforce being of good quality.

I guess it just goes to show you cannot rely too much on first impressions of things. We've got people in this thread who got the dreaded EVGA 970 ACX1 and have reported no issues, and then you've got people who are having issues with the other brands.

Soooo, I have a 1440p monitor and a gtx 770 currently. I want to be able to play on 1440p on high settings (no max required lol) at 60 fps. Is a 970 enough or should i step it up to 980? (I don't want to SLI and I currently have i5 2500k)

There's also just the odd bad example here and there. And vice versa. I've heard from both reviews and users that the EVGA cards are not that quiet. I certainly wouldn't ignore that just because there's some reports of people not finding an issue with it.

Its always hard to make conclusions off of small sample sizes. Best we can do is just look for patterns.
