Ya'll keep throwing around the term deadbeat. Aang was fine. He just showed some favoritism to his most direct progeny, which given the context of who he is and the state of the world only made sense. Kya and Bumi were a little salty that the youngest got a little extra attention from dad - the siblings resolved that grudge rather quickly.

As opposed to the bullshit Suyin and Lin went through. Then Toph just said "fuck it" and roamed the earth.

I've never taken part in avatar bets, but I really want to see how right or wrong I am on this one.

Will Happen

The Series finale WON'T have a Deus Ex Machina

Toph Will Show Up On Screen At Least Once During Book 4

Bolin still doesn't Get His Dick Wet

Korra Will Re-establish A Connection with Her Pastlives

Won't happen:

Mako x Korra = endgame

The End of the Avatar (achieving peace, no need for the Avatar cycle by the end of the series)

Opal is Evil

Zaheer will Have At Least One Spoken Line

Korra losing her Abilities Permanently/ Korra Dies/ Korra Loses her Avatar Status

Tenzin Continues to be an Overbearing Ass

I don't know what I'll do for the bet, I guess I'll wear an avatar of ...ugh Kai.

Also no bets for whether or not Kuvira is a lovechild of Zaheer?

You guys are overselling the extent to which the Gaang were "bad parents".

Nah not really. I can agree that they weren't malicious or abusive. But they were definitely shit parents. Proof is in how damaged the kids were emotionally. Lol

I mean look at how damaged Bumi and Kya were. I mean shit look at Lin.

look at this pic from book 3

then look at azula's asami avatar from book 4

it doesnt have those shiny highlights anymore, like back in book 1
Reminds me of hairlos.

Aang neglected his other children. So yeah deadbeat technically isn't the right term (since he was actively taking on other responsibilities). But he wasn't there for his other children. Just because he had reasons that explain this (and are understandable) doesn't excuse it. He had responsibilities to those kids as well when he decided to be a parent. So he totally was a terrible parent to his other kids, so I don't see the debate.

Also trying to excuse it away is basically saying he did nothing wrong. That he couldn't have made better decisions. He was flawed and made mistakes, and could have done better. So while I agree the responsibilities Aang had to shoulder makes his actions understandable, he still made the choice to be a father and he abandoned that responsibility.

Neglect? Sure, I guess. Kya and Bumi's major complaints were that Aang took Tenzin to a few places he never took them to. That's rather innocuous. Not to say it isn't a bit of a bummer, and it's easy to see why Kya and Bumi felt a little salty about the whole affair, but there's a reason it was a minor drama the siblings settled hastily. All three are relatively well adjusted and accomplished adults. Aang was in their lives for the entirety of his own. Beyond anything, the reflection of Aang as presented by his children humanized him to me.

Ya'll got it like Aang practiced the water whip technique on that booty or something. You do have more of an argument with Toph, and in her case it's a more interesting case study given her particular upbringing and temperament.

If that's how you read the situation. That wasn't how I took it at all: that they were simply mad because dad took Tenzin on a couple vacations and didn't include them lol I took it as he wasn't there for a large portion of their life due to his other obligations. I would hardly call that innocuous or something to brush off. Just me though.

That's a fair point. I guess I'm just not a fan of telling story for established characters off screen.
Especially if it involves a major shift in personality/morality
. I'm more okay with action, but when you get to personal changes then it rubs me the wrong way. Even if logically it makes sense.

I guess it's why I'm weary of time jumps as a story telling device. They can be used really effectively. But I also hate when time jumps make major shifts in charcters personality/morality as I feel it cheats the audience and feels jarring. Just a personal preference. While I still think it's strange Katara put up with it, I can agree with everyone and say it's not illogical. Just a subjective opinion why i wasn't feeling it. *shrugs*

Although I did like the plot from the kids perspective. It provided good material for Tenzin and his siblings.

I know it's been like two pages since you wrote this, but honestly, I never bought the idea of how perfect Aang was. He wasn't, and so when LOK told us that he left Kya and Bumi with some feelings of negligence after Tenzin was born, It seemed perfectly logical to me...

Kya says that she doesn't think Aang didn't love them, of course not, but he did make Kya and Bumi feel left out. So what? I can't expect a 12 year old boy to represent what a 40 years old man would be like as a parent either.

I don't get this idea that Aang was perfect or needs to be perfect. That you believe that if you weren't a fan of this plot. **shrugs* But Aang had plenty of flaws in ATLA. I feel like you can't be critical of the writing without people saying you are putting Aang on a holy pedestal. My bigger issue is that they are presenting established characters with pretty contrasting character shifts off screen. I do not believe Katara would put up with Aang neglecting his obligations of being a father to his other children regardless of his other responsibilities.

But whatever lol

Yes, I know, that's what I said :p But my point is, it wasn't shocking to me that Aang showed favoritism to his only airbending child and future leader of the Air Nation. In fact, Bumi and Kya turned out to be great people and still got along with Tenzin growing up.

They did in fact resolve their differences quickly, so Aang and Katara did something right. VERY right indeed. Tenzin, Kya and Bumi are very great characters and still get along like a family should.

I mean going from "there was some favoritism" to "why don't he want me, man?" is a bit of a leap.

admiral dog there's still time to hop on the Goddessami bandwagon before book 4 starts

once it begins though... its over, no more fairweather stans. i will drag all who speak out against Her until the bones in my hands shatter and my tongue recoils down into my throat.

This is pretty much how I feel. Anyone that has siblings will probably have faced this. The fact that all 3 siblings get along as well as they do, despite tthe burdens Tenzin would have to face, lead me to believe Aang and Katara were great parents. Not perfect because no parents are.

Oh shnap, last post was a little bit snippy. :P Was heading out the door, didn't mean for it to sound that way. Oh well. But yeah, I can accept I'm in the minority that didn't care too much for how they told Aang's story as being a failed father. I guess it's about perception. At least to me, I didn't take it as Aang simply leaving out his other children on vacation. I took it as him being neglecting in a much larger sense. That he was largely absent for his other kids (because of his duty as Avatar, and his focus on Training Tenzin and keeping the air bender people alive).

But if that was not the intention of the writers, and I misread it, and it was really just two children with jealousy issues and they really shouldn't be that damage emotionally because of it, fair enough.

Anyways....yeah.

What would you do if they kill Asami off in the finale for the sake of drama

Hmm not sure I understand where you are coming from. I really felt that Bumi and Kya were pretty hurt emotionally, and felt like Aang wasn't there for them. I didn't take it as them just being jealous because of favoritism. But if that's how it was, okay. Guess I read the plot wrong. I had no idea Aang was present in their lives heavily, and they were just a bit jealous of Tenzin.

Kind of makes me not like their plot as much anymore tbh.

Really hope this isn't the end of Avatar. D:

We need another series- one that takes place.... in SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEE.

I'm serious, and probably alone on that.

People are a little hard on aang, but Toph really was shit. Considering she didn't even attempt to repair the rift between the two daughters and just left because she felt bad. Hey...you know Toph, one of your daughters just got scared on the face and you ripped up the report saying it ever happened. I'm pretty sure she's feeling a lot worse.

It's laughable, especially with Shyamaladingdong stating that he was fan of the show, while really don't understanding anything of it.

Also the weird racial stuff.

The ATLA artbook has a forward written by Shamylan and it comes off as incredibly forced and stupid. I don't think I could bring myself to watch the movie.

Maybe no one told her about that.

I laugh every time. Then they had to have another dude break the rock mid air. It made a guy fall down!
Also it took like 15 seconds and the fire nation soldier is just like "Damn, turn based combat!"

You shouldn't. Just watch a review or a collection of the most stupid scenes.

I truly am blessed to have never seen that movie.

On the clip though, it's cool, but I don't really care about the airbender kids.
