agree. Last night i helped 2 irl friends with the 28 weekly and it was a grind. The end was just me soloing the boss. Now i get to drag them through nightstrike today.

I think a rep system and mic requirement would be best for raid match making.

Nightfall is much easier than the 28 weekly because of arc burn. The 28 weekly seemed to drag on without it.

You can clear the raid without a mic and listen to others. Hell, you could clear the raid with a silent team if everyone has cleared it that many times.

How would you know which door to open on the last boss? I guess you could open both.

Sorry, I have to apologize if my responses come off a tad bit barbed. I realize I'm arguing with the GAF Apostle of Destiny. I realize you fundamentally know how the game functions.

As for an LFG system over MM? An LFG system can work just as well, look how easy and intuitive the mobile version of the DestinyLFG website is. A similar version could easily be implemented in the game, for certain.
Just as well, but not better? Doesn't account for situations that matchmaking doesn't? Doesn't allow for specific restrictions or expectations to be set before entering, thus avoiding frustration?

What benefit does matchmaking provide over a listing board with descriptions?
Let's be clear though, FPS-raiding is nothing ground breaking or paradigm-shifting. It's not so unique that it would render MMing irrelevant, nor using existing systems in countless MMOs to be considered a false comparison.
My point was that you have many gamers who are taking part in Destiny that have little idea of what is involved in a traditional MMO raid. Millions.

Like you, I understood Destiny's systems prior to anyone really explaining them to me. I understood I had to do my dailies, do my bounties, get marks, and get my light up. So like any good Guardian, that's what I did. The entire reasoning to do this was simply to gear myself for "end game" content that was surely coming.

So then you're "raid ready" and you finally do the raid with like-minded Guardians, and you down Atheon, and you realize that raid gear *IS* better, and that raid weapons give you damage boosts to certain Vex within the raid, and it becomes apparent that the game wants you to gear up and do hard mode.

So now the next goal is getting to 30, because it not only heavily modifies your base damage, but it also implies you have some raid gear now, and then doing the raid on hard mode.

This isn't my personally take on how I should play Destiny, this seems to be how Destiny was intended to be played.
That's all accurate, yeah.
So I do the raid each week, I get shit. So it halts my progression. The week timer is nonsense, not having MMing or an LFG system is nonsense. The itemization is nonsense.

So now what can I do? I can surely level an alt of the same class and run it again (which I've found out some people are doing just to get an extra chance at RNGesus) is that how they expect me to play? Should I be leveling alts, waiting for a trickle of content? How many times should I really be doing the story missions over and over again.

And then we have two months of heavy game releases during the annual holiday game deluge. What's keeping anyone playing Destiny beyond October or even November?

The most exciting thing for people right now seems to be the next patch, how sad is that?
I'm not going to even begin to say that your complaints here are invalid. I will be making alts of the other two classes for a variety of benefits, but that's really neither here nor there. The weekly lockout on raid gear, the necessity of raid gear, the total amount of playable content in the game and the spacing of DLC releases are all unrelated to the matchmaking discussion. If these things bother you to the point where you aren't having fun, you should stop playing. Trying to make it more complicated than that is where you lost me altogether.

I get excited for new patches in games I like all the time, I don't really consider it sad :-/

Just give people the option and let them deal with it. If they don't like the MM folks, they would naturally drift over to asking friends for help.

I don't have an issue with the option for it either.

If priorities are an issue though I would prefer they get it in for the other stuff first.

That and if you aren't trying to gear up for end game content, then why are you playing? Crucible is fun, and it has its own merits, but for how long? There isn't enough content out there to really have the luxury of ignoring end game content at the present time.

And this is where we see the ugly truth again about why the game is flawed in its core. You hit the nail on the head - people don't have the luxury to do anything else in this game aside from heading straight to endgame. There's no auction house, pets to fight, mounts to collect, etc etc etc.

I'll say it again, I think the best time to sit down and play this game may be 6 months down the line if it's even still a thing.

Maybe you overestimate the average casual gamer. I have friends playing Destiny who have never touched MMOs, don't have any idea what it means to "raid", and often play with a beer in one hand and music blasting. These are the types of people that will join the VoG through MM, play for a bit and say "what is this shit??" once trouble hits, and quit. A very advanced MM system could filter out the more casual people, but no MM does that too and it requires a lot less work on Bungie's part.

That's the thing though, you can't get to level 28 by accident. You have to level up your gear, grind a faction to fill out your slots, and buy an exotic from Xur for the fastest way.

So a level 28 requirement would filter out people like your friends.

Okay my brothers I just hit level 20 and as I understand it I need rare armor with light abilities? What's my best option? Is there any great farming locations?

If anyone is wondering, Hard Raid is completely doable at Lv 29, as long as you aren't lactose intolerant.

We did it last week when I was the only 30 and then this week with two level 30's and 4 29's. Any lower levels are strongly discouraged.

There's very little room for error but it's not terrible as long as everyone has strong weapons. We took down Atheon this week in 3 rounds of Time's Vengeance, it's honestly one of the easiest phases of Hard mode.

Personally "Defend the confluxes" and "Awaken the Gate" were the hardest encounters.

Just completed this myself. As somebody who sucks with fusion rifles and sniper rifles I decided to try it with a shotgun. If they are close to you, blast them. If they are far-ish away from you, sprint directly at them and mash the dive button, pop back up and blast them. I was bad at this at first, but in the end I got SO MANY KILLS from sprinting, diving, and blasting. It took me a little while... but on my better games I got 30-70 points per game.

Thanks for the tip!! I'll give it a try before I give up on it.

So a level 28 requirement would filter out people like your friends.

It would definitely help, but then isn't the main point of mm getting the players who aren't making effort to build groups into the raid?

If it's just to make our lives easier then sure, maybe even make it so you have to finish the raid first to unlock it! :p

http://destinynews.net/trials-osiris/

This Crucible mode appears to be very different from the rest. Not only is there a level 20 requirement, but we’ll also need to earn our way into it. The Trials will likely be the most competitive mode as well, since you will no longer be able to participate in the mode if you lose 3 times, until you buy your way back in.

This mode rewards high level gear

cool strike ideas

Your ideas sound super fun, but I can see how they would require A LOT more development time to accomplish. It's totally feasible that future content will be as involved as what you're describing since they have the base game out now and can focus on improving from the baseline. We can hope!

Update!

80+ hours playtime

3 nightfall completions
2 raid completions

0 exotic weapon rewards/decrypts
0 exotic armor rewards/decrypts
0 exotic bounties
0 blue engrams decrypted into purple items
0 exotic or legendary gifts/decrypts from cryptarch rank ups (level 18)
0 exotic gifts/decrypts from Vanguard/FWC rank 3

Nerf this douche canoe already!

I agree

I haven't done the raid but about as many hours. 1 exotic bounty. Not a single legendary/exotic from ANY engrams/loot. All my purples are from buying & queen mission and I bought a suros regime.

Okay my brothers I just hit level 20 and as I understand it I need rare armor with light abilities? What's my best option? Is there any great farming locations?

Keep playing normally and the rare armor will drop naturally rather quickly.

What time did the patch come out last week?

Find someone to help you through the Queen's missions. You're guaranteed a legendary helm or chest armor(you could also get a gun or ship but they're more rare).

My favorite engram farming spot is Ishtar Commons on Venus . Never ending waves of Vex and Fallen.

Post patch you're probably going to want to just run the vanguard strikes and do crucible. Do your daily and weekly strikes as well whenever you can. You can get the rares/legendaries you need to level further through drops, but do enough PVP and strikes every week and you'll get the reps/marks to outfit yourself through the Vanguard or Crucible quartermasters.

Get two pieces of legendary gear from the queens quests. Will go a long, long, long way. The bounties themselves are easy to do at level 20, but you'll need help to do the follow-up missions to get the gear, and those are level 24. Once you get on the missions, just post in this thread and someone can help you do the mission so you can gear up. If you are on PS4, I can help. On the earth mission, the entire thing takes about 3 or 4 minutes.

Looking for more GAFers that wouldn't mind raiding with a newbie sometime tonight or this week. I just want to experience the content, mang.

PSN: liquidekkah

Had the best luck in a Raid Run last night.

Drops:

Atheon's Epilogue (AR)
Hawkmoon (Exotic Pistol)
Ice Breaker ( Exotic Sniper)
The Culling (MG)
Corrective Measures (MG)

and the Chatter White shader.

Do the quick easy Queens bounties, get tickets then get a higher level friend to take you through the Queen Restoration mission, nice quick way to to get two legendary gear pieces with light to get to level 22-23.

Edit: Already mentioned by the time I posted. :)

I got the chest armor, is it possible if I do it again I'll get a helmet?

I don't use a mic and it's fine. We usually have 2-3 guys talking max anyway. Everyone else listens and does their thing. It's doable. Not sure why people keep saying EVERYONE needs to chat. It's already noisy as it is with 3 guys. The most talking from anyone else is when we were talking about the loot, lol
you don't need to call out all the time but you need to coordinate, watching and listening to your teammates. if everyone knows what to do it'll be a piece of cake.

actually, i wouldn't mind trying a no mic raid.
lol, a no mic raid would actually be an interesting challenge. i'm sure neither of you are advocating that a group that does not know what it is doing could succeed without at least some of the members on voice chat though.

You don't want to farm- check out the guides in the OP. :)

You'll be looking for Rare gear, the best of which is base level 20, which fully upgraded will get you to 24. However, during this time you can also start working on your first legendary pieces. Right now, the Queen's Wrath missions can get you a helm and chest piece with relatively little work- though I think you need to be 21 to try one, and you'll need someone to carry you to victory. I'd help out if I were home! Feel free to shoot me a pm with any specific questions.

I've pretty much said from the beginning to my friends when arguing about the success/failure of Destiny, is it would ultimately come down to how much content is in the initial game and how well they can space it out post-launch.

My suspicion, now with the benefit of hindsight and some timely bugs, is that the two expansions were initially part of the core game, and were cut in an attempt to artificially inflate the content. They should have kept everything together, and 3 raids as end-game content with different level requirements, and worked their asses off on new content come January.

Could it take the majority of the user-base to beat VoG on hard-mode, all the way til December? Most likely. Will that user-base still exist come then when all manner of other major franchises are releasing in between that time? Most likely not.

And yes, there will be casual players still very far behind this curve all the way up til December, but they're just as susceptible to leaving during the holiday game deluge as anyone else.

I just noticed the lowest level of the vanguard playlist awards no marks -.-
I could've been doing some public events man.

Also, I got invictive and I don't see what all the hoopla is about. Maybe I need to upgrade it more and all? I can see it being situationally useful as it regenerates ammo in tight spots (IE juggler fights) but it just seems a bit under powered compared to other options for that same slot>

I think you're thinking Exotics should be common or something. I've never heard of anyone getting an exotic decrypt or reward. You mainly get them from buying from Xur or doing bounties.

Incorrect. People get exotics from nightfall rewards, raid runs and legendary decrypts ALL the time.

Without meaning to run it in, I have had two exotic rewards and two decrypts from Legendary Engrams

Each NF strike I run I see someone get an exotic, too.
