Boston Herald prints Obama cartoon with 'watermelon' reference

Newspapers, everyone.
Print media is desperately trying to survive and has been crap for quite awhile now. It's all tabloid sensationalism with no boundaries, even racism.

It's sad because there was a time when some newspapers were considered an accurate and trustworthy source of info. Now it's all garbage and not even the slightest bit honorable. Newspapers are now pathetic.

now i'm thinking about what it would be like if the guy said "fried chicken toothpaste." i'd probably be grossed out on top of it all.

Are you guys being for real? The joke here is that the white house intruder is racist. How does that make the Herald racist?

what exactly did the intruder do that was reported on that was racist?

you can't just associate the guy as being a racist and expect it to be funny. the context of the picture somehow matters, but not what he says?

Are you being for real? It's mocking Obama, not the intruder. Why would a political cartoon mock the intruder? That's not what political cartoons are about. It's even in the apology.

I know, I agree. I don't know why stating something that exists in society is problematic. If the president was actually using watrermelon toothpaste in the comic that would be clear cut. The comic isn't funny but I think it's being blown out of proportion.

The joke isn't even that the intruder is racist. The flavor of the toothpaste is completely irrelevant to the punchline - which is that the intruder is in the personal bathroom of the president making small talk with him.

IT IS MOCKING OBAMA; It's attacking him by proxy of his associations. i.e. the secret service that work for him, the whole White House in general, his political party.

that can be accomplished a lot better in an infinite amount of other ways

"did you catch the basketball game?"
"can i borrow a pair of your boxers?"

yeah, let's go with watermelon toothpaste.

They are mocking the absurdity of someone getting so close to the president. The punchline is him being in the president's personal bathroom, making inappropriate 'casual' conversation to a shocked Obama. The racism is just the cherry on top.

Writing a racist character is not = racism.

Here is the rest of the 'apology':

Contributors to our Editorial and Opinion pages have the right to express their views, and satire is clearly used in Jerry Holbert’s cartoon today,” Herald spokesperson Gwen Gage said in a statement.

“That said, we sincerely regret if we inadvertently offended anyone and extend our sincere apologies.”

They apologized because of the backlash, that does not mean the backlash was justified just because people don't understand context.

That's him.

Can't a cartoonist love delicious watermelon and use that as inspiration in dialog directed to our black President in a political cartoon and not have people think it's racist?
No, he can't.

He can't use watermelon, fried chicken, running fast or the size of his dick. These are things known throughout the Western world as racial stereotypes, and can't be used 'innocently'.

Came here for exactly this. I leave satisfied.

The cartoon is actually lumping racism with insanity; with mental ineptitude. The guy that broke into the White House was reported to have PTSD. Overall, the cartoon is portraying racism negatively. I repeat: the cartoon is not condoning racism.

I'm going to assume that the intention was to make the intruder racist rather than the cartoon itself
That's a shade of grey that most people won't note even though it's almost certainly the intention. It's to make the Secret Service's lapses look all the more ridiculous, not to disempower a minority.

Thats some mental gymnastics to turn a pretty straightforward one joke one panel comic into a commentary piece on the connection of racism to PTSD and mental illness.

But I guess thats a more likely scenario then the artist trying to throw in a racist jab.

I don't get it.

He went too far. Get it? It wasn't bad enough that the intruder made it all the way into the White House bathroom and helped himself to a bath but to add a racist comment on top of that? Now he's gone too far.

Get it?

It's a play on the meaning of 'going too far' with regards to the lengths he trespassed into the White House and... moving from polite conversation to insulting remarks?

I don't know.

There's no way there wasn't racist intentions behind that. When you think toothpaste flavors who thinks of watermelon toothpaste? Even if you did, the artist would have to be completely stupid to not realize the implications of picking that.

You know, half this thread is people explaining to other people the stereotype. Maybe it's not THAT far out there that this dude didn't know?

When it's your job to write/draw political cartoons, it's kind of your job to be on the pulse of politics and society/culture.

I'm not saying he didn't know what he was doing, but if he didn't he's not very good at his job, especially in America.

The cartoonist for some reason writes a character for the intruder, and he's racist for some reason? Nonsense. It's plain as day.

The weird thing is that that comic doesn't even need the intruder saying anything. No need for a word bubble. The joke (even if it's not that funny anyway) is accentuated by the text at the bottom, then immediately ruined by the racist non-sequitur.

I'm not saying I believe this poor deflection of an excuse to get away with racism, but if we're really giving him the benefit of the doubt, how does not knowing about racial stereotypes make him stupid?

Somebody who can't list every single racial stereotype off the top of their head shouldn't be the asshole here, it just means they don't think about that crap.

This explains the alternate version:

The cartoon ran in other publications with Obama being asked about raspberry toothpaste, because the group that syndicates Holbert's cartoon asked him to change reference from watermelon to raspberry. Holbert said he did not tell the Herald about that change.

Why is it so hard for people to criticize Obama without resorting to racist dog-whistles?

It's low hanging fruit. It's a lot easier to rile up people about welfare and weed than it is to try to take the time to explain to them about the actual things he does wrong, and the GOP mostly agrees with the egregious foreign policy anyway.

I agree. All you need to do is have the intruder say something - anything. Heck "hey, would you pass me the toothpaste?" would work just as well.

The humor is in the fact that the intruder got into the bathroom undetected long enough to start taking a bath, not in what he says. Sheesh.
