Boston Herald prints Obama cartoon with 'watermelon' reference

Why is it so hard for people to criticize Obama without resorting to racist dog-whistles?

Because many of the people "criticizing" Obama on this level don't actually know enough about his policies and actions to do anything other than racist wink-wink-nudge-nudge jokes.

I never get this joke. Black people love Chicken and Watermelom. Who doesn't like chicken and watermelon, if you don't something is wrong with you.

And I love grape drank!

I'm not saying I believe this poor deflection of an excuse to get away with racism, but if we're really giving him the benefit of the doubt, how does not knowing about racial stereotypes make him stupid?

Somebody who can't list every single racial stereotype off the top of their head shouldn't be the asshole here, it just means they don't think about that crap.

Any regular person can be forgiven for not knowing every racial stereotype (though, especially in America, it's rather odd for someone to be ignorant of one of the main ones), but if your job is to be a political cartoonist, then you're kind of bad at your job if you genuinely didn't see the negative connection made in that cartoon.

Racist stereotypes never make any sense.

Not even that, SOMEONE should have caught that at the Herald, and the fact that no one did and it still made it in is telling. When NO ONE at your office can see it, your office has some problems.

def i used to use that shit when i was a kid it was great

It was definitely the GOAT when i was a kid.

I think it's a little silly to qualify a city as racist anyway. Especially one that is as liberal as Boston and a city where over a quarter of the population is pretty much college students.

I think there was some Gawker article from years ago that claimed Boston was especially racist and that seems to have seeped into the collective unconsciousness. It's so ridiculous. If you think Boston is particularly racist you really need to live in more places in the US.

The Boston Herald on the other hand is the newspaper for mouth-breathing idiots.

I hate that racism made watermelon taboo in a lot of social instances. One of my first baby pictures was of me stuffing watermelon in my face. It's one of the only fruits I eat and I have to be careful what I say about it for fear of being considered racist.

We're the racists for noticing it guys!

The cartoonist is so not racist they didn't even realize the connotations with that flavor!

He went too far. Get it? It wasn't bad enough that the intruder made it all the way into the White House bathroom and helped himself to a bath but to add a racist comment on top of that? Now he's gone too far.

Get it?

It's a play on the meaning of 'going too far' with regards to the lengths he trespassed into the White House and... moving from polite conversation to insulting remarks?

I don't know.

Now the joke actually makes sense when looked at like this.

Print media is desperately trying to survive and has been crap for quite awhile now. It's all tabloid sensationalism with no boundaries, even racism.

It's sad because there was a time when some newspapers were considered an accurate and trustworthy source of info. Now it's all garbage and not even the slightest bit honorable. Newspapers are now pathetic.

I work for several newspapers and that's simply not true.

However the herald has always been a tabloid with questionable judgement and that goes back to when they owned the newspapers I currently work for.... Long before diminishing print returns.

I agree. Newspapers are still the best place to get a well thought out piece. Other media seems desperate to break the story first and put out a bunch of misleading information

Well except tabloids... tabloids are the worst.

Boston needs to step up their game.
Belgium is miles ahead in the poor taste/racist jokes category.

Great to put things out of context.

Its part of a satire section and above the pictures it says it's Putins weekly contribution to the newspaper. The joke is on Putin, not Obama and it was published shortly after some racist comments Putin made.

Be more careful with accusing people when you don't even know what it says. It just as well could've been part of an article describing what a disgrace the photos are.

Coincidentally, Bush would hello and it would be all over Comedy Central's "political" shows and the Internet.

Maybe if he was falling down while saying it. Or you can provide an example, if you wish. The Daily Show website allows you to search their entire back catalog of episodes.

Or maybe everything doesn't have an equivelant and the ways Republicans respond to Obama is significantly different than how Democrats responded to Bush.

that can be accomplished a lot better in an infinite amount of other ways

"did you catch the basketball game?"
"can i borrow a pair of your boxers?"

yeah, let's go with watermelon toothpaste.

.

The guy should be fired.

I have to disagree that saying "this is what Putin would say" makes that okay.

From his statement:

I didn't think people thought like this anymore

It's not possible for a political cartoonist that has ripped Democrats and Obama for years is ignorant of dog whistle racism. There's only one reason there was a flavor mentioned in that cartoon, and it's not because he likes watermelon. I'm sure there is watermelon toothpaste in his house, that's what gave him the idea to use watermelon toothpaste.

Something being thrown out as satire doesn't shield it from criticism, the joke was in poor taste nonetheless. I'd take the cookie they presented for the president as something more in line of well intentioned if a bit tone deaf, but the supposed satire piece, nah.

The joke is that the intruder got so far into the White House that he's taking a bath in the bathroom while Obama is brushing his teeth and making casual conversation.

Any other flavor would have been making the same joke. I'd like to believe it was an honest mistake but who knows.

That benefit of the doubt....get it everytime lol.
