PS Vita TV coming to West as Playstation TV, $99

I'm leaning toward grabbing one for the PS4 streaming for when the fiancé is using the main tv. Remote play in vita largely stinks due to having to use the touch screen in place of triggers or stick clicks. As well as playing in the tiny screen vs my old tv that's 50".

Is this thing really coming out in a few weeks?
This item will be released on October 14, 2014.

The 1080i killed any interest I had. Darn
I did not know this. Pre-order cancelled. I wanted it for 20% remote play, 80% movie streaming.

The Amazon page has a PSTV video I've never seen before. You usual yadda yadda about "the perfect home entertainment system" and all that.

I'd probably get a Kindle Fire TV then. I'm sure the remote play feature on the Xperia phone/tablet will be hacked and ported to other Android devices.

The performance of remote play for me has put me off. I hadn't used it much, but I've been using it to cheese my D3 characters to 70 and I'm getting pretty regular "lag" (the icon appears in the top right corner) and there's no way I'll be happy with that.

I'll have to device come launch whether the ability to play Vita games on the TV is enough for me, or if it'll just make more sense to pick up a second PS4.

What is your network setup? Are both machines wired or are you using wifi in any of those?

That icon means you have a bad connection. That's what's causing the lag.

This is the head scratching thing about the PS TV. How can you release a media streaming device in 2014 that doesn't support 1080p?

Because it's just a Vita without a screen really. Has to go by Vita innards, unless they modified it.

Tempted to import before release so I can play my Vita games, now that it's region free.

My PS4 is wired, obviously the Vita is wireless.

Im talking remote play 10 feet from the PS4. Not fussed about internet remote play for this, but I'm 80 down/20 up anyway.
Sounds like you need to invest in a better wireless router perhaps. Mine works pretty well and my nerves only 25 down and 5 up.

Go into Power Save Settings on the Vita and untick "Use Wi-fi in Power Save Mode".

Do you have 'Connect Directly with Playstation Vita System' turned on on the PS4? It's under Remote Play Settings on the PS4.

If it is on try it with it turned off. I find I get much better performance with my PS4 wired, and the Vita connection going via my router. Otherwise you need to be pretty close to the PS4.

I have a good Netgear router at the moment, which doesn't hiccup anywhere else. I will be in a position to rule that out shortly though.

Thanks, I'll give these a whirl when I'm home later.

From the sounds of it, you should have a great remote play setup once you get the settings sorted out. You may even want to skip direct connect altogether and force it to go through your router (though I use direct connect without issue throughout my house).

I'm late to the discussion and you may have already tried this, but try manually changing your wireless channel if you're connecting through your router.

It's unfortunate, but I don't think there's much of an option here. The reason this thing exists seems to be a buy product of a decision to include video out in the original Vita Hardware, which was only capable of outputting at 1080i.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
There hasn't been much in the way of retooling. The PSTV/Vita TV just seems to be a repurposing of existing Vita components.

720p and the lack of inherent PS3 input lag for PSOne classics is nice though.

I'm thinking of getting a PS Vita TV now. I already own 2 Vita's but would rather play some Vita games on the big screen. And I don't mind Vita being 1080i, The PS TV is built on Vita part and frame resolution, I don'y see how they can make it 1080p without charging more and making it a PS3 shell then driving the price up. Can't wait to try it out

It doesn't matter if you're 1 foot from the PS4, what matters is the location of your wifi router. The ps4 sends the signal to the router and that is sent to the vita.

Edit - in the circumstance described

not if you set your PS4 remote play settings to connect directly vita WiDi (direct wifi connection). distance absolutely matters it these circumstances

I'm thinking about buying this. I don't really play portable games but there are PSP and Vita games I'd love to play on my TV.

Would it be dumb just to get this as a PS Classics machine or is the PS4 eventually gonna get PS1 emulation?

I am pretty sure the PS4 will get PS1 game support sooner or later. I am actually quite surprised it hasn't yet. The library is one of Sony's biggest assets and they can make some money selling the games.

Only think I could see happening is that Sony will try to shoehorn the compatibility into PS Now to push games as a service.

The PS TV is only a 100 bucks so getting it for PS1, PSP and some Vita games doesn't sound crazy at all. I'd love to see Sony pushing the micro console concept a little bit more (better Vita game support, more apps and multimedia compatibility) but they neglect everything Vita related.

Also, Is there built in memory on this thing? Or do I need to buy a vita memory card to even save PS1 games on it.

There is 1GB of memory built in. That might not be able to save more than one full PS1 game at once, but you can always delete and redownload. (PS1 and PSP game saves are stored separately from the game itself, unlike with Vita titles.)

Digital Foundry did a piece on remote play and found the vita and remote play itself adds 100-160+ms, which on top of whatever rendering lag is inherent to the PS4/game. So in Killzone for example, remote play produced an unplayable 240ms of total lag. Based on my experience with Destiny, I suspect it's even worse than that. Assuming the PS TV uses the same technology/hardware as a Vita, I wouldn't touch one of these for remote play. It's really awful if you have any sense or knowledge of input lag.

Remote play is for certain kinds of games, as Sony has stated. Competitive FPS gameplay is not really what its there for.

That being said, Destiny's " campaign" is perfectly playable via remote play and grinding is super easy on it as well.

most people here find it good enough though and rave about remote play.

All within about 10 square feet of each other, though as I say the PS4 is wired. This week I should hopefully be able to try a new router to see if that helps.

i completely disagree, but aside from that...if both ps4 and pstv are wired, particularly on the same LAN, i'd imagine the results may be far better than anything with the vita

I would love 1080p at least for the menus but I can live without that... How good is the PS1/PSP library on the Vita? My PSP stopped reading discs recently and I could see myself dipping on some ps1 games like Sled Storm (but it might be too obscure). Any chance the PS4 will get the ability to run PS1/PSP games in the future?

The PS TV compatibility list has the PSP and PS1 games that are playable on it. I doubt the PS4 will get the ability to play PSP games, but I would think PS1 is definitely a possibility.
