Assassin's Creed "Parity": Unity is 900p/30fps on both PS4 & Xbox One

This is amazing.

Doesn't there seem to be a contradiction between

  • We purposefully kept the game at the same resolution on both platforms because we wanted to avoid debates.
  • And we were limited because of how CPU intensive the game is on available resources.

So which one is it? In the first scenario it would seem that the PS4 has additional headroom that is left on the table?

Whatever the case Ubisoft has shot itself in both feet and created a controversy over their biggest release of the holiday. Insanity. I didn't think we'd have another Tomb Raider level controversy this year.

That same argument was used for the Xbox One DRM.

Guess where a lot of game blogs get their news and opinions?

Here. This site is far more influential than you know.

I think you overestimate the seriousness of this issue in comparing it to how people perceived the Xbox one drm. I would predict the majority of mainstream consumers in this case would either not care, or probably just shrug their shoulders and carry on if they were planning to buy the game rather than vote with their dollars.

Well this went from a game I planned to get day one to when it gets cheap on pc. Fuck Ubisoft for this forced parity shit.

I guess I don't understand why a slightly noticeable resolution downgrade would stop someone from picking up a game they already pre ordered.
You realize the "It's only a small thing" argument goes both ways, right?

Why hold back a slightly noticeable resolution upgrade? The answer to that question provides the answer to yours.

I can't say I'm happy with the PS4 version being gimped, but I can live with 900p. The AC4 patch to 1080p made such a miniscule difference to me, I just can't get very up in arms over this.

Chill? Reminds me of the "rational" gamers that were saying chill after the X1 reveal and DRM plans.

No. Don't chill. Raise hell in a constructive manner. Spread the word. Cause a stink. Let Ubi feel the heat, just like MS felt it after seeing the preorder numbers when word got out about their original plans.

Staying quiet in these instances usually equates to being complacent. Raising hell doesn't mean rioting in the streets and death threats. It means raising your voice so even game media can't ignore for fear of missing out on the next attention grabbing topic.

And I've seen a lot of people suspect it in this thread, but I don't know if MS had a hand in this. Because if they did, MS really miscalculated the benefit of having the PS4 version gimped to force parity or at least the ability of Ubi to not be blatant about intentionally locking both versions to avoid debates, because this makes MS' hardware look inferior. Again, I don't know if MS had a hand in this. Wouldn't influencing Ubi to gimp the PS4 version be illegal somehow?

A part of me wouldn't doubt Ubi said this just to cover their own butts, so they don't have to put in the extra effort in the PS4 or both versions, with their COD-like release schedule for AC games maybe resulting in less time to optimize.

I grew up on Atari, so if the game was 720p it wouldn't matter to me if that's the game the dev wanted to make. But to intentionally hold a game back to avoid debates and in favor of the company you just happen to have a co-marketing deal with? I can't support that.

Agree!!!

:ROFLMAO:

This logic makes my blood boil every time I see it. People said the same thing about the Xbox DRM: "Oh, only people on hardcore forums care! They're only a small percentage and the mainstream won't notice anyways!"

Such bullshit.

As I just said, it's a pretty big overextension to compare graphical parity in one game to the locking out of used games on an entire platform and assume people will care the same amount.

Not buying this shit now. Locked at parity to stop debates? Really?
CPU locking is more believable, but we'll see how things go on PC. The PS4/XB1 CPU IS lacking significantly compared to what PCs have had for awhile, so if that's a bottle neck then in theory we'll see much greater performance there even with all else equal.

But, yeah. If there isn't something else holding up the game or you already are going for as good as you want from the visuals, don't go for parity for parity's sake. A reason many went with PS4 was better performance even if it wasn't going to hold up to a mid range Pc, and we want that used rather than held back to be "nice."

Embarrassing and shameful.

I don't expect a lot from Ubisoft but that is sad, imagine telling the dev team. Shaking their heads in disbelief.

Microsoft, how low can you go, the shit on my shoe.

Huge overreaction in this thread.

Do we know any of the other facts? Do we know that there is parity with all of the other grapical settings as well? Maybe its 900p on both, but we will see differences in other areas like shadow quality or something?

I mean I get it, going with the lowest common denominator for parity's sake is extremely lame, but its not like its going to ruin the game. I'm not saying dont be angry at all, but don't let it ruin your day lol.

Edit: And yes I am kinda pissed about this, I think its really lame. AC4 obviously looked beautiful on PS4 at 1080p, and WD at 900p looked noticeably worse. I'm not going to cancel my PS4 preorder though. Can't go PC either, dem Ubi ports...
When I'm playing stuff on my PC, resolution is just about the last thing in the world I would reduce in order to improve performance. Dropping the resolution to increase shadow quality sounds like a really dumb idea.

You can think it doesn't take out your post all you want. Why are you acting like I owe Ubisoft a purchase? Resolution matters to me, I play on a 60" screen. If the Xbox One version was 1080p and the PS4 version was 900p I would buy the X1 version.

I don't approve of their decisions and thus won't pick the game up at launch.

Please explain to me where I owe it to Ubisoft to un-cancel my pre-order?
You don't. I just think that people cancelling a pre order for a game they thought looked graphically amazing and really fun a few months ago because they found out it's running at 900p, no matter the reason, is just weird.

There isn't anything to argue about really. You think it's a big deal, I think it's just a stupid decision that won't affect how much I enjoy the final game at all (and I'll get it on ps4). I mean shit. The ps4 version will probably be a hard locked 30fps now. It's still going to have an edge. It always does (well besides a few psn games).

Let's just remember how "forced parity won't exist, it would be stupid".

Sometimes people aren't cynical enough. Companies will always act as shitty as possible to the point where it begins to reduce revenue and profits. No company is going to do something just because it benefits consumer or is the fair thing to do. The sole purpose of a company is to make money. If they can get away with parity, it means less resources spent on optimizing for PS4 and a happier MS, an important business partner. Why the fuck would any company not go for parity if they can get away with it?

This is not going to result in fewer debates, it's going to result in a ton of new debates being created. Like for instance:
1. "What drugs were Ubisoft smoking when they made this decision?"
2. "Did MS moneyhat Ubisoft for parity?"
3. "Why shouldn't I boycott Assassin's Creed Unity?"
and so on.

How can you possibly be this naive?

I am simply refusing to let my emotions cloud my better judgement.

We have had plenty of proof so far that PS4 is more powerful and produces better multi-platform games this generation. But the very moment a game appears that looks like it may have parity with Xbox One and some people lose their minds. It's ridiculous.

Just when I thought the debacle of resolutions was coming to an end and everyone was just getting used to the difference.

I'm still looking forward to this game. If it gets good reviews, I doubt this will really stop people from buying it.

This thread is such a shit show. People cancelling pre orders if the resolution is slightly lower than 1080p? People trying to tweet every major gaming site? Saying it was a ms moneyhat?

It's pretty obvious the ps4 could do 1080p. But making this big of a deal out of it?

This is why gamers get a bad rep imo. Well this and gamergate stuff.

Imagine if iTunes still used 128kbps or whatever crappy bitrate for MP3s, and Amazon was at 256kbps. Now, suddenly, Music Label decided their music on Amazon was going to be 128kbps because they don't want to be part of the bitrate wars, making their music objectively worse for no actual benefit to anyone. You better believe fans would be pissed.

Have you not followed the DRM and loudness wars of music? Games are not the only area where people care about the quality of the content they consume, nor should people not "make a big deal" of it.

Yeah, I've literally never dropped resolution below my monitors native to increase FPS. Everything else gets sacrificed first.

By the end of the gen I expect very few multiplatform PS4 games to run in 1080p...
Has their been a resolution confirmed for Advance Warfare on PS4 yet?

It doesn't matter what console you own, this is wrong. You shouldn't lower the quality for one to be more in line with another version. I owned a PS3 last gen, if developers would have lowered the quality of 360 games to match some poorly made PS3 ports, I would have been disturbed.

And I don't care about resolution but this seems really messed up to me.

Next twist-- PC version can only be played via streaming and the stream is locked at 900/30.

I sent in the request to cancel my PS4 version preorder to Bestbuy.

This sort of shady underhanded anti-consumer tactics by MS is also why I won't ever buy another MS console.

What a strange reason for parity. Looks like this will be a trend for AAA multiplatform games this generation.

There's always the PC.

As I just said, it's a pretty big overextension to compare graphical parity in one game to the locking out of used games on an entire platform and assume people will care the same amount.

The problem is nearly every time GAF or some other large group on the internet care about an issue - be it DRM, regional lockouts, parity - someone eventually comes along to tell us how irrelevant we all are and nothing will change because no one will notice. It's annoying.

Maybe some dropped pre-orders will get some attention. Everyone here who is upset and has the game pre-ordered should drop their pre-order. Even if you still plan on buying the game. Money is the only thing that is going to get the suits attention.

I can't believe people actually care about this. If a few extra pixels suddenly makes a game less fun, that really says something about a person.
Well shit, I guess we should just accept 240P gaming if that's what the devs choose to make right?

You act as if I can't play the game now because I canceled a pre-order. Did you forget that BestBuy and Gamestop sell used games?

I wait 7 days, pick it up for $10-$20 cheaper (thanks gamer's club unlocked) and don't put $0.01 in Ubisoft's pocket.

Where did I say I wouldn't play the game that I found "interesting enough to pre-order because it came with $10 back in reward zone points."?

Edit: Also to be clear, I never thought AC has looked "graphically amazing".

ACIV was 1080p and hard locked at 30fps.

They're not. Sony has co-marketing for many games as well.

Sony may as well stipulate on future marketing deals that Xbox 1 games must run in black n white.

- MS throws money at Crystal dynamics for Tomb Raider
- MS introduces Xbox One's controversial indie "launch parity"
- MS Introduces FPS + resolution Parity across rival platforms

I for the most part do not care what MS do anymore, when it effects their rivals by fighting dirty is guerrilla warfare.

Still blame Ubisoft for accepting their anti-consumerist practicing and dereliction of duty.
