Assassin's Creed "Parity": Unity is 900p/30fps on both PS4 & Xbox One

It really is amazing seeing the role reversals this gen from last gen. Xbox 360 was always the version to get because it had that slight advantage and fans, journos and clerks had no qualms beating that drum. Wonder how it would went down if devs/pubs suddenly went for parity then to avoid forum debates.

Bad framerates, better lod, denser crowds.

There could be a lot of reasons.

Except that if these were the case then the Xbone version wouldn't be the same resolution and framerate, since there's a substantial gap in rendering performance in PS4's favour.

I'm pretty sure people do care about power. If that's not the case, then PS4 wouldn't be outselling Xbone even after the price cut, and kinect removed.

Wasn't the PS3 advertised as more powerful than modern computers because of cell, and that 599 was worth the price for that power?

How did that work again? With the lowest power console (wii) outselling the others, and the one that didn't advertise power coming in second?

Price is king. PS4 had a great price. When they announced 399 I said, "that is a good price, lets go to amazon and pre order now".

Not because PS4 was more powerful. People care about power sure, but price is typically a greater factor.

Man I don't know.

I went to futureshop, asked them for a monitor I can take with me,if it has an HDMI port and if it was HDCP compatible.

Don't know its resolution output. Its 22 inches though.

Bought it so I can play video games when I have free time.

You know it says it right on the box.

Why is everyone so self-righteous about their ps4 edition of this game?
When you watch a movie in DVD or Bluray which one do you pay more for? The blu-ray one because it includes better sound and better picture quality sometimes a behind-the-scenes bonus but you pay roughly 50% more.

Game developers do not get anything back because they push their game to 1080p or 60fps there is no return on investment here. They still only get 60$ just like on the XO version and there is nothing justifying the extra cost just because a little group of people rants about 600k extra freaking pixels.
If the technology and investment is already there then of course you can push forward like for example InfamouS.
A company like ubisoft which created a new engine version because if next-gen then it is going to take time and investment to reach higher grounds.

1080p or 60fps is just extra gravy if the initial budget only covers the technology necessary to reach the minimum reference quality - in this case Xbox one

Of course there can always be some external "tampering" - which ms in this case is accused for but in my opinion that is a lot less likely.

Unity probably already costs A lot of freaking money and I am pretty sure they are running out of money for anymore changes. For them to invest extra resources for a freaking res-bump is not a priority.

This PR is howecer extremely and so freaking poorly planned and written that it would hace been beat if it wasnt released.
PS4 is easier to develop for. It's probably the lead platform platform for all multiplatform games.

Multiplatform games shouldn't suffer on PS4 because the Xbox One can't handle it. Xbox One isn't leading the market, PS4 is. There's no reason games shouldnt' take advantage of the PS4s power. It won't double the budget.

It's going to be a very long generation for many. I just don't see an outcome where any publisher shows clear favouritism this gen, in terms of graphics.

Why do you keep saying this when the opposite has been true? The most recent big release was Shadow of Mordor, and that was another one where there were very clear visual differences between the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. It's not about showing favortism toward one platform or another. It's about actually maximizing what both can do. Warner Bros. chose to do that while UBI isn't with ACU.

You took offense to big meanie?

I love you, man. I wound never offend anyone on this forum. I love all you people.

What do you mean you people?
lol

This is funny to me. It is funny to me that Microsoft's shit is worse AND NO ONE WILL ACKNOWLEGDE IT. Am I wrong, or did everyone talk about how technologically superior the original Xbox was? Why is it not okay to say "this platform is better?"

The PS4 was $100 cheaper then the X1. That is the reason people have chose the console. Power means nothing, as we saw with the Wii.

This is off topic though.

Are you really serious with that statement? You really think some just don't buy the best performing console? I bought a 360 last gen because of the shity ps3 ports. The wii sold great because of motion controls. My parents in their 50's had one.

I think this is not so much a case of "lazy devs" since they were apparently aiming for 1080p/60 fps on both consoles just a couple of months ago.

This is probably a case of "top men" from the publishing side telling the devs that they can't put the PS4 version above the Xbox version in terms of resolution or frame rate.

PS: 100 pages in one day, keep it coming GAF.

You guys don't seriously think Microsoft payed Ubi to gimp the PS4 version of the game do you? Seriously?
I think the theory, from what I can gather, is that MS paid (or stipulated, or wink-wink-nudge-nudged as part of the marketing support) for the Xbox One version to be one that's not missing any features or bullet points relative to its competition.

I starting to come to the same conclusion.

Third party devs will likely aim for the lowest common denominator between the console
platforms, due to cost related factors.

I feel Cerny/Sony should have designed an absolute power house with regards to the PS4
as opposed to the marginally better console we ended up with(compared to the XB1).

I think roughly 40% is not really "marginal"

Multiplatform games shouldn't suffer on PS4 because the Xbox One can't handle it. Xbox One isn't leading the market, PS4 is. There's no reason games shouldnt' take advantage of the PS4s power. It won't double the budget.

How many games have you developed, and been responsible for its budget?

Since they're running out of CPU power I suppose the xbone is the true victim to getting the dumbed down version. ;)

Laughable. The cpu difference isnt large enough to come close to the gpu differences.

http://bf4central.com/2013/11/battlefield-4-uses-95-cpu-power-found-ps4-xbox-one/
According to Frostbite technical director Johan Andersson, the game uses 90 to 95 percent of the available CPU power on the PS4 and Xbox One

If thats to be believed then the CPU difference isnt that much.

100 pages(with many comments about the amount of pages) and no comments about 50 vs 100 posts per page. Even more amazing.

Maybe there will with the odd release here and there, but the major new IP or franchises I expect to look identical. Destiny, AC, being examples.

I seriously don't understand this. Why not be the voice for Gamers, and the industry in a positive way, instead of thrashing them?

Because these so-called video game "journalists" are in bed with the people making the games. It's one big suck and fuck and we gamers aren't invited unless they feel like fucking someone in the ass. At least GameInformer is "honest" about it as they're owned by Gamestop who would never do anything to keep themselves from selling a couple extra copies of ACU. The guy even says, "Resolution and frame rate are not my favorite topics." That shit shouldn't matter, you still investigate and try to figure out why they promised one thing and delivered another, especially when it's shady like this situation clearly is.

But yea the IGN thing is hilarious: "All the P you need." They might as well just write an article saying "Fuck You Haters, just do as you're told and buy the damn game!" There is no integrity in this business anymore, no investigative enthusiasm. They are all just complacent assholes who don't want to jeopardize their next game advertisement, I mean game preview. It actually makes me sick that these guys act they there serving us when all they're doing is serving their overlords and careers. I guess shit like this is what Gaf is for though. I for one am proud to be among those like you who can see through all the BS.

Ubisoft has lost it, of that I'm convinced. They luck out with Black Flag after nearly driving the Assassin's Creed series into the ground with so many sequels, and now we're getting two in the same year. They then apparently decide to take the term "lazy dev" to its logical conclusion and just shoot for the easiest way possible to make a game. And they have the audacity to say it's to avoid all the debates....sure it is.

Not that I expect this to affect sales in the slightest - the sheep want their AC fix, but as someone who was at least mildly interested in Far Cry 4 I could now give a rat's ass about anything they put out from now on. I don't appreciate their lackluster efforts towards development and won't be supporting them in the future.

So a last few things here from me and then I'm going to move on.

1. I don't see this honestly having too much of an impact on sales. There was a huge amount of controversy for Ubi today and it did not turn into large scale reserve cancels.

2. Unity is down in reserves for a Creed title anyways so once numbers come out in November of it being lower in sales people may attribute that to this event. Its not.

3. However I feel personally on this matter I hope Creed is fantastic. I still plan on buying it as a huge fan of the franchise.

4. Good job jschreier trying to get some more info out of Ubi for us. Your a damn good "press sneak fuck" :-)

5. Hopefully when all is said and done we learn the reasons behind this. The DF article on this game is going to be hella interesting.

It's going to be a very long generation for many. I just don't see an outcome where any publisher shows clear favouritism this gen, in terms of graphics.

You should come join us in the DF threads, of course it helps to remove your blinders aswell.

It's off topic, but yes I'm serious, and I stand by it.

The PS4s appeal to the mainstream was down to price, not power.

Off topic though as I've said.

"We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff,"

why would they say that? who did they think would accept that? are they trolling? should I just leave the basement?
Watch the ps4 releases at 60fps or whatever and this all ends up being nothing.

the difference between 900p and 1080p is so small that if ubisoft didn't say anything, no one would notice except for the ones who make the effort to count the pixels.

You guys don't seriously think Microsoft payed Ubi to gimp the PS4 version of the game do you? Seriously?

Why not? it's a valid assumption, this makes zero sense and they haven't even replied. Worse things happen in and outside of the industry, same reason why I don't trust youtubers that sign agreements for early copies or why I don't read "first official reviews", that's how it works.

the difference between 900p and 1080p is so small that if ubisoft didn't say anything, no one would notice except for the ones who make the effort to count the pixels.

Ah, cool, thanks for letting us know, man.

I should have known all the times I could tell the difference were because somebody else counted pixels.

You guys don't seriously think Microsoft payed Ubi to gimp the PS4 version of the game do you? Seriously?

* MS are marketing AC:Unity.
* Post-Mattrick, MS have made great effort to close performance gap.
* MS told Blizzard it was 'unacceptable' for Diablo to not match the PS4 in performance.
* MS enforces parity for release dates and features with indies.
* MS are happy to spend money to impact competitors versions (buying exclusivity etc).
* 3½ months ago, Ubi announces the PS4 version was targeting 1080p/60.

YOU DO THE MATH.

Maybe there will with the odd release here and there, but the major new IP or franchises I expect to look identical. Destiny, AC, being examples.

But Destiny and AC would be the odd releases since they're in the minority in terms of what's been happening so far this gen.

It's difficult to see why else Ubisoft would intentionally hobble the PS4 version without a cash incentive from their marketing partner.
Moneyhat or not, Microsoft and the Xbox One is obviously the reason for this "parity".
They say they did it to avoid resolutiongate but they ended up doing the complete opposite they just brought even more attention to it.

How would you like it if you bought an iPhone 6 but apps weren't allowed to run better on it because Android Phone ZXX3 had a partnership with some developer? When you buy any sort of computer or device there are 3 things you look at. Price, Features and Power. Sure, some people may not care about power but those people are ignorant. They only buy what's popular.

I think the theory, from what I can gather, is that MS paid (or stipulated as part of the marketing support) for the Xbox One version to be one that's not missing any features or bullet points relative to its competition.

My theory is that the marketing deal includes an agreement about sales performance relative to a competing platform. This way, they did not have to directly stipulate what to gimp on the competition.

I mean, how more idiotic could microsoft look if they paid money for a marketing deal, and still sold less (which would likely happen)?

I can tell this has been a difficult generation for him.
