Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

Terrible font, but the game actually looks much better than I expected. I'm glad we're getting a version of this for posterity.

Day one, I will be playing this as I've wanted a port for years and who knows maybe if we support this Capcom will finally make REmake 2 and hopefully not fuck it up.

Maybe we'll even get ports of Outbreak 1 and 2.

So, I'm not the only one who spotted this generic font, I hope this is just a "preview" thing, but something tells me it will be in the release as well. Well game looks smoothed out, but I will still play with the tank controls and 4:3 aspect ratio.

They still need to add in all the music. At least I hope they still need to do that and it won't have that much silence.

It's been awhile since I played the remake. Was that the way the remake on GC was?

No, in the GC game there was music, background music was there and the remastered tracks from RE1 on PS1.

lol but then the very next screen you've got stuff like this so I don't know whatever maybe the visuals of the original were actually really inconsistent, we just couldn't tell because it was so low res?

That's what I'm thinking. Maybe Capcom didn't lose the source assets afterall and these are the original source files upscaled, whereas the files used in the original game had to be compressed to save disc space.

whats the deal with RE0, was that nintendo published or same type deal and we could see a HDversion one day?

I think it was one of the lowest selling games in the series and it never really had the following REmake did.

That said, I'd definitely buy a remaster of it on PC.

Super glad we're finally gonna have a legit version of this game on PC forever.

Can't wait for this.

Yeah. I actually haven't replayed REmake since I beat it ten times upon release, and there was always something with playing it on Dolphin that I didn't like, so I never bothered.

Saw PS4 footage of this recently and man, does it look better than the first reveal. Great stuff. A MUST play for anyone who missed it. Heck, I beat it already and I can't wait to play it again.

I loved the train setting :(

Looks much better than I expected, all things considered. Really like what they've done with the menus. Backgrounds still look filtered but they don't look like absolute shit like most filter algorithm art assets tend to.

REmake 2 is wishful thinking.
A remaster of RE0 on the other hand is a big possibility if this does well.

ME TOO. So. Much. Especially when you were walking on top of the train as it was moving. So, so awesome back then. Train was my favorite part of the whole game.
Putting in a third voice for the train. One of the best areas in RE, right up there with RE4's village.

Sadly, I think it's unlikely. RE0 was both one of the worst selling of the franchise and word-of-mouth of it is usually pretty poor. Capcom may not see any point in doing an HD re-release. Whereas REmake on the other hand while not selling great has fantatsic word-of-mouth. If 0 was often praised by people we might've seen it.

It sold 100k fewer copies than REmake, so maybe there is a chance. Code Veronica was ported several years ago, and I get the impression that game has an equal amount of people going "Yes!" or "Ehhh."

I think the original source files are resolution-independent and can be scaled without degrading image quality. However, at higher resolutions if there are any flaws they will be more evident.

We can only hope! I'd think they would look even sharper if they had the original source files though. Unless they still are running them in an old program that won't allow them to ramp up the resolution higher 1024*768 or something, which in any case will give an upgrade to the Gamecube version.

I gave the video a second look and just everything is very inconsistent.

Some screens are very obviously upscaled, and others seem like they're legitimately higher resolution assets with more detail than was originally present. Then some screens just look bad.

I have no clue what's going on with the port, but what I can tell is that the quality of the backgrounds seems to be all over the place.

Not sure what you mean by proper.

Jill has 8 inventory slots and Chris has 6, that's the most important difference.

As far as the differences in the story, for some reason I thought I remember you should play as Jill first or something but I can't recall exactly why. It's probably nothing. I can't remember.

Maybe it's because it's a work in progress and not every background has been replaced for the upgraded version yet? Dunno.

I'm not being sarcastic btw, I honestly don't know.

I can't remember, what is the "proper" way to play? Jill first or Chris?

Chris is mostly more difficult because of less inventory space and because Rebecca isn't quite as helpful as Barry. Jill also has access to better weapons but she does have less health.

You should at least have one play through with each though.

No, there is nothing story wise that would matter which one you play first.

Even if they are all genuine high resolution assets, some will always look worse than others, giving the impression they were upscaled. You have to consider that this is a 2003 game. Back then, these assets were not supposed to be rendered at such high resolutions. As I said, at higher resolutions all the flaws will be much more evident.

Just looked at the videos, it's really inconsistent. Some background look like really bad upscales while others look pretty sharp.

I'm assuming that their starting point was the upscaled stuff for every room as sort of temporary art in order to get the game running and completely playable, and as the improved ones come down the pipe they are just replacing them. Well, I'm hoping this is the case. Considering they still have plenty of time on the Xbone/PS4/PC versions, I'm hopeful that by the time they are done most if not all will look sharp.

It's still a mystery how they're doing that though. Maybe some are just more upscaled than others? Maybe Capcom did in fact dig up some of the original CG data but not all of it?

Yeah, for all we know they found the original render data at some point between the first reveal and now, found a way to convert the format into something a modern offline renderer can read and process reasonably well and are actually re-rendering the backgrounds. That's probably the best case scenario.

I think you are assuming wrong. As I said, some assets when rendered at high resolutions simply won't look as good as others, giving inconsistent results. This is not a matter of resolution but rather a matter of quality of the source material.

I think the inconsistency is just because they haven't updated everything yet. We don't know the assets quality of the original source files either. I mean obviously textures were probably not huge or anything, but 3d object models were probably decent and those would scale up better than what some of the rooms still show.

But that's just me being optimistic.

I came away with the same impression.
Some assets are Sharp, while others are lower res.

Some of the examples are very clearly being upscaled, not rendered at a higher res.

Another possibility is that the original pre-rendered images were at a high resolution before being compressed for the Gamecube disc, and that Capcom found some of those. I don't know.

For a minute I thought that maybe some of the backgrounds were always at the resolution, but details weren't visible on the Gamecube's 480p, but those details would have come to light on Dolphin.
