iOS Gaming October 2014: We didn't even know this was releasing on iOS

I haven't really played anything on iOS besides rhythm games in the past year or so, so question - any good JRPGish games released recently? I'd exclude ports since I don't want to buy an SE game for like $15 at the moment but maybe there is a port besides those.

There's people who kinda trash Kemco, which pumps out tons of JRPGs, but some of them are actually really good.

My personal favorite is Fantasy Chronicle, which is very polished, has a great story and some unique twists on the genre. The Alphadia series and the Symphony of the Eternity/Symphony of the Orgin games are also good.

Many of the others are decent if not great games (a little more cookie cutter). But the above, especially FC, are worth it if you're into JRPGs IMO.

They sometimes run $.99 sales so that's a good way to take a dive on a few if you're hesitant.

I'm very sad to say that Game Dev Story is broken on iPhone 6. Button touch zones are misaligned, making it very hard to actually play the game. Plus the game looks really rough super-upscaled as it is. :(

Well, there really aren't that many JRPGs even if you include ports that come out (maybe a dozen?) a year, unless you want to buy bad RPG-maker looking games for $9 from whatever that company that has a dozen or more of them is, so excluding ports probably brings you extremely close to 0 I'd guess. Banner Saga just came out though, and it's a story focused RPG with tactical battles, and well reviewed, not really JRPGish though.

What a timely reply from awp69, Kemco was the name I was thinking lol. No offense, I'm sure a few of their games are good/decent, but I got really burnt out with earlier purchases and they all sorta look the same to me and sell for $10 and then get put on sale for $1 or sometimes free, so I have trouble buying them now.

Another game that just came to mind is Nameless: The Hackers (it's been a sale for less a few times iirc). Looks may deceive a little, but the battle system is enjoyable and employs an old school JPRG feel to it with a party of 4 and various skill to level up and cards to collect. The story and writing were decent/passable, at least not a hindrance, but the game system was enjoyable for the price, and probably one of the fewer original games I enjoyed that resembles a JRPG, even if it is more a JRPG-lite since it has no real exploration aspect to it.

TA forums say reckless racing 3 is pretty busted atm for all devices. Might want to hold off from buying for now

Anyone else been playing Poker PLAY!( its free) and its by Wild Tangent games. its different then any other poker games since you need to is get X score in X amount of moves by touching 5 cards. pretty easy.

P.S i have nothing to do with this game, i just like the art style/ gameplay.

Wanted to give a hardy recommendation for Pixel Boat Racer that's releasing tonight. I helped beta test it and it's really a fun, challenging racer.

On the surface it looks like a homage (and still is) to old school pixel racing games. But it's anything but simple compared to those games. Winning takes practice, knowing when to let go of the gas and "cling" to the waves as opposed to jumping over them gives it a strategic element that gives the game its legs. Jumps slow you down but there can be a number of times when it isn't always the right thing to ride the waves either.

Once you get used to the mechanics, more is thrown at you like rocks and other obstacles that you need to jump. And enemies get quite tough and then weapons come into play.

Really a great little game game that quickly becomes addicting. There's a lot more meat to it than appears on the surface.

Same thing. That takes up space.
Okay, so I purged my four years worth of emails (8k down to 70), deleted games I don't really play anymore, and somehow I only have 1gb of free space. That shoudn't be. I should have at least 3gbs of space. I can't figure out where the space went

Settings/Usage-that will show you where your space is being used.

Sometimes my iPad just randomly eats up space. It ends up in "other" on iTunes and I've got no clue what iOS did with it. Cleaning email/attachments or using a cleaner program did not help. It's been worse since iOS 8.

That's the thing. I went down the list deleting games. The biggest thing on my device is only 350mb

Maybe it's IOS 8 like KC said. Before updating, I could clear 5gbs to download Xcom. There is no way I should only be able to get a 1gb of free space now.

Ugh, this is really frustrating since I need the space to download games to review and preview.

If this is the case, then do a backup of your phone, then restore it. When it comes back up point to your backup to restore from.

Run PhoneClean and see what's taking up space.

I use Dr. Storage for my cleaner and it can make a huge difference. Not gigabytes but definately have recovered hundreds of MB at times.

Still no SHIKIGAMI NO SHIRO on the EU shops, le sigh

So glad there's a new high profile iOS shmup after such a long time since the last release

Woah, hadn't even heard there was a port of this coming out. And clicked the link in the shump thread and it's out in the US!!

Looks to be all Japanese though. Wonder if they're working on an English translation.

It may be out in the EU but it won't show up in a name search due to the JP name.

Here's a repost of the link:
https://itunes.apple.com/jp/app/shi-shenno-cheng-ios/id905915259?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4

$5.99 USD

EDIT: Sorry. Guess this news is a few days old. But I'll keep the post here for anyone interested.

Anyone know how it compares to Cave's shumps?

If you connect your device to a PC with iTunes it will show you a breakdown of your storage. How much space is 'other' taking up? If it's above 2GBs then something is wrong, and your best bet would be to restore (if PhoneClean doesn't solve the problem.)

Also, you don't need to clear up double the app size (i.e 5GB for XCOM) if you install apps directly through iTunes.

Judging from screenshots the actual gameplay area is about a quarter of the screen? What?

Yeah, that kind of concerned me as well. Debating on taking the dive. It's been sadly quiet on the shmup front for iOS lately other than the freemium Sky Force 2014.

I guess from what I understand Cave may be done with doing iOS ports (at least outside of Japan).

You can search for Cosmo Machia Inc. in the app store and it shows up :) At least in Australia, EU should be the same.

Can anyone recommend an iPhone controller for my 6+? Also, I want a Final Fantasy game, how do they look on my the new phone? I tried to put Eternal Legacy on here but it appears to be removed from the App Store.

Has anyone here played Miner Dig Deep for XBIG on 360? I'm looking for a quality iOS version of that, and would be willing to pay for it.

Any suggestions?

DQ2 Is up on the store if you check under Square-Enix's name.

Click on "SQUARE ENIX INC" underneath an existing title and it's in that list. $4.99.

EDIT: nvm seems to be up on search now

Is it an original game or a port? I have no idea how to tell :(

It's a port, first game of the Castle Shikigami series.
There's 3 arcade shmups Shikigami no Shiro games (plus a spin-off RPG-ish I've never played)
First was ported to PS2 (NA/JPN/PAL), Windows JPN, Xbox JPN (multiple times)... The US/EU version is called Mobile Light Force 2 and misses the plot and TATE mode, avoid.
Second game was all of those plus GameCube and Dreamcast (both JPN only)
Third game was ported to Windows JPN, Wii (NA/JPN) and X360 (JPN only).

Really hope this one's a port of the late Xbox's version (Evolution) with new enemies and better patterns, tho I doubt.

Sucks there's no MFi support and I'm sure no iCade either... Blutrol will do, I suppose

I actually subconsciously typed in 'Dargon Quest ii' when I was searching for the 2nd Dragon Quest game. Dammit Square, you've ruined me.

Still found it though, first result.

Yeah...if you could update The World Ends With You so I can play the game I spent $20 on that would be great, Square-Enix.

My iPad Air should arrive today. Pretty stoked!

One thing I noticed since doing a bit of browsing to get some new games for it is that King of Dragon Pass has seen a lot of updates. Apparently the game is now fully universal and has had a lot of other improvements (including some new art and scenarios).

I know the game isn't new or anything, but if you haven't tried it and have any interest in story-driven sim games, I have to recommend KoPD again. Back in 2012 I think it was, I gave this game a nod in the GotY voting here with the iOS re-release; even though I haven't played it in a while I'm pretty eager to pick it up again on the iPad. Really my only issue with KoPD on iOS was that it was a little finicky to play on such a small screen - it is a very text-heavy experience, and while it is the perfect type of game for touch controls and being played at any pace, the small screen sometimes got in the way of appreciating the awesome hand-drawn art or reading the generally heavy amount of exposition.

Such a satisfying game when you sit down and fully engage with how much it asks you to learn about its world.

The Silent Age Episode 2 is out next week, 16th October. Will be IAP to the first episode for $4.99. First episode remains free.

Give it to me now!
