You need to have a specific, G-sync-enabled monitor, yes.. however it works only (as of now anyway) with certain nvidia gpus.
I think 700 series onward? Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

And i'm very much like you btw, i've only picked up a few things here and there reading GAF and watching a couple of tech reviews and videos on youtube, but i'm no expert or anything.
I only asked because you never know, it's not like i was baffled or anything! :P

For those of you experiencing coil whine, post what psu you're using as well. Coil whine can completely go away with a different psu.

EVGA Supernova G2 750W - rebranded Superflower Leadex; PSUs really don't get much better; I don't care if the noise may go away with a different PSU for some random reason, but the sound is clearly coming the card; it's at fault, not the PSU.

2 from Brack and 1 from Techmania. The 3rd (2nd from Brack) is on the way. Hopefully without coil whine.

It doesn't matter. I tried it with my old bequiet PSU and it's the same. My Gainward 770 has no coil whine at all, and I can't accept that because of this:

I didn't mean to imply that you *should* switch PSUs, just that listing the PSUs along with the card may produce some patterns, i.e. certain cards produce coil whine with certain PSUs and not others.

FWIW, I have the 850W version of the Supernova G2, and yes it's a great PSU. No GTX 980 yet, though. Still waiting to catch it in stock.

Depends on the game. There's nothing you wont be able to play well, don't worry
 
Installed my two Zotac 970 omega amps, they are quiet and relatively cool..... here's a couple quick and dirty cell phone shots, posted on the october pick up thread too.... Being at work right now sucks!!! :( lol

Dude, i once thought overclocking had something to do with my PC time settings, so don't be afraid to ask. I learned a ton by visiting GAF before i became member and i am deeply greatful to the GAF community for providing noobs answers and explanations if a question or query arises.

As for these cards. Man, these things are incredible pieces of hardware. Most 970's run at 1.5GHz stable. Really makes me wonder if we're going to start seeing GPU's run above 2.0GHz or equivelant to CPU base clocks.

Waiting it out till next year for the (hopefully) 6Gb or 8Gb Vram 970(Ti) or 980(Ti) versions.

Those Zotac cards look fairly thick, like a couple inches thick compared to MSi and Gigabyte version i seen on youtube unboxing/review videos.

And yes they are 3 slot cards..... I was happy to find my super long SLI bridge. I took out my x-fi soundcard because it would be right in between the two video cards, blocking one of the fans.....

Anyone who wants a solidly built card, this is for you...... they are the heaviest video cards I have ever owned. I have owned evga for quite awhile now... 6800 ultra, 8800 gts, a few gtx 260 core 216s.... three 480s, two 580 classifieds, two 680s........ but evga really seems to have dropped the ball this round, so I went to Zotac. Very pleased so far.
 
Well, my second MSI 970 from Amazon was updated with a delivery of 10/15...and my first order was updated with a delivery of today! Won't have much time this weekend to test it out, unfortunately. Glad I put in an order for the longer, flexible SLI bridge, though.

Also, holy shit, those Zotacs are HUGE.
 
Sorry if answered already, are you able to disable the Strix's feature of the fan shutting off below a certain temperature? (Through a custom fan curve or something)

~15k on 3dmark, stock clocks in win7 with my 3820 @ 4.4ghz

Someone posted in here that they did so. They changed the fans to kick on at 45C instead of 60.

I'm going to do the same but I haven't gotten to that point yet. Only had a couple hours to play with my STRIX yesterday.

You might be able to do it through afterburner, if not it's probably the ASUS app that comes with the card (I didn't install that yet either).

edit: It's probably in their GPUTweak app.

So what's the current favorite brand for SLI 970s? I'd value running cool/quiet the highest in terms of importance. I don't care about availability, I can wait for stuff to come in stock.

I used msi afterburner, asus gputweak didn't have an option
 
What's the popular GPU benchmarking tool nowadays? I'm expecting my MSI 970 today and there's nothing more I love than seeing by how much a new GPU destroys my old one (Radeon HD 5850).

So I just played for about an hour. 1080P with all settings set to Ultra. I do not have a way of recording FPS in game but it was incredibly smooth. I couldn't sense a single dropped frame.

BTW Shadow of Mordor is seriously fun.
 
G1 GTX 970 has coil whine but I don't notice it when using headphones so not a big deal for me. One thing that I'm worried about is my fans. They sound kind of weird at 60% and up. Like a woo woo woo sound.
 
Wow.. I've been refreshing the Newegg page for the Gigabyte G1 over the past couple of days looking to pick up a second one...I was just able to get one it seems...Was literally back out of stock as soon as I completed the order, so we'll see...

Did you forget to install the SLI Bridge cable? You can't enable SLI without it.

I heard the warnings about SLI but went ahead with it anyway. I thought I major release like Mordor would have gotten an SLI profile by now. Luckily there are options. I guess this is a glimpse of things to come.

This is actually relativity bad. Normally Nvidia would have pushed a profile a week before release for a big title like this. Especially when they're sponsoring it.

I mean, I haven't done an exhaustive search. Found out about the card last night and checked online for 20 minutes and can't find anything available. If anyone can prove me wrong, I'd be happy to be wrong!
 
I had been checking Amazon quite frequently and had been finding some in stock here and there. I just never found the edition I wanted on Amazon. Luckily, Microcenter had the Asus Strix and I jumped on it. I want the MSI or the Strix.

You first need to establish whether your system is compatible with a particular card. Things like power requirements, and whether or not it fits in your case. Then, you might want to look at consumer reports such as the ones found on this thread in order to avoid models/brands that are known to have issues with cooling, coil whine, etc. The last thing I'd look at is the reputation of the manufacturers themselves, and the warranty/customer service they offer with their cards.
