Is Halo still relevant?

Halo 3, Reach and 4 all have filled MP. You can jump into any playlist and get a game going.


Titanfall's MP is dead.
Cod Ghosts is limited to a few playlists(tho AW will likely thrive)
BF4 is a mess on everything but PC

Halo MCC and Madden are the only reasons I own a next gen console this early. I have $60 sitting in my Xbox account just waiting to preload it.
 
Depends on the expectations of the fanbase and the developers. I'd wager that it is relevant but I don't see Halo: MCC exceeding 5 million sold in the short run (one year).

I hope I am wrong.
 
With all the MLG pros that 343 have been hiring to help with development, I have great faith that Halo 5 will be something special. Also, Frank O'Connor is a delightful man.
 
Yes I think Halo is still relevant, and I believe Halo 5 will turn out great, but I'm not sure if it will have any serious longevity with Black ops 3 releasing so close to it.
 
I have honestly never been able to join in the hype for the Halo franchise. Back in the day I would play Halo 2 multiplayer with my buddies, but that was really about it. The story never interested me enough to play the campaign the whole way through. I'm just wondering what other people's opinions are on this game? I understand the marketing appeal and competitive aspect behind it, but I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts.

*edit, I'm not saying the game has 100,000 people on it. But it's not dead. Dead is Chromehounds or Spec Ops: The line Multiplayer.

What does irrelevance mean to you exactly? And what franchises aren't irrelevant, in your opinion? Because although it might not be as big as it was in the Halo 2/3 days, Halo still seems pretty relevant to me. And if Halo can't be classified as relevant, then I don't think there's many franchises that can be.

Yeah I was just about to ask him where he's from but didn't want to derail the thread, Admittedly I haven't played Titanfall in about 3 weeks now but I've never had any problems getting into games.

Talking out of your ass there slick. Halo 3 and CoD:4 routinely traded spots for Top played game on Xbox Live, it wasn't until Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009, that Halo dropped, further evident by how much Reach was hated by a large group of fans.

And if you look at the new Call of Duty, it's almost eerily similar to the gameplay of Reach and Halo 4 now, full on active camo, entire game types like ricochet copied, very futuristic sci-fi gameplay.

I didn't know the pre-orders for AW were that dire, but it doesn't surprise me. Series fatigue combined with a lackluster Ghosts must have a lot of people taking a wait and see or skipping AW altogether. Its too bad bc although I havent been a fan of COD in years, AW does look promising. The longer dev cycle looks like it might just result in something really good.

Back on topic, I'm really looking forward to Halo 5 but the string of disappointments thus far this Gen has me keeping my expectations in check. As for MCC, well, I'm sort of in the "meh" camp. I haven't really played much Halo since Halo 2. I did pick up ultra cheap used copies of both ($5 apiece) but I guess I could wait to check out 3 and 4 remastered if there's enough of a noticeable improvement. I know many consider 3 the pinnacle of the series and the little bit I've played seems good. Halo 4 seems to get really mixed reviews, with the SP drawing a mix of praise and hate while the MP is mostly hated.

My main question is will all the games in MCC have active MP modes, SP only, or some mixture? If the MCC has full MP modes for 1-3 (not sure anyone would care for 4) then I can see it possibly resurrecting Halo MP on the Xbone for awhile, which would be kinda cool.

I see what you are saying but Titanfall isn't dead, a year from now I might agree but right now you still see a lot of newcomers and I've yet to see the same person twice in matchmaking.

It's not like, COD levels or anything but it's active enough. Also, people disliked Killzone. With Titanfalll even the people who stopped playing admit it's still a great game.

Halo 5 Beta is 4v4 to show off the new gameplay. Of course it'll have more people. WTF. Halo has always had 2v2, 4v4 or 8v8 at the very least. Additionally even if Halo is only 4v4 (it's not), so what? The biggest problem with the decline in shooters has been the complete homogenization of the genre. Everyone needs everything the same in every game. It's crazy how no one criticizes Street fighter for not having fatalities, or Forza for not having the ability to do crashes like Burnout or why Last of Us doesn't have Assassins Creed style wall climbing. But no, Halo needs 32v32, it needs sprint, it needs ADS, it needs loadouts, etc.
 
I would play a new Halo game if it was good, sure. MCC does nothing for me though. I've played the hell out of those games and I couldn't justify passing over a new experience for a glossy trip down memory lane.
 
OP: it's not over. I am a huge fan too and though Halo 4 was a disappointment (some campaign levels and story) I will say Halo 5 is one of the three biggest reasons to buy an Xbone for me. The other two being Gears of War and Killer Instinct.

I'm not feeling MCC so much as I feel H2 is the weakest campaign, but I'll probably still want it once I get a Bone. It's just not the draw that Halo 5 is. Hell, it doesn't even have Reach and ODST which I think are two of the better ones in the franchise.

It doesn't own as much mindshare currently as franchises like AC, BF, and CoD do and it's an exclusive IP so by definition it's only relevant to a smaller fraction of the market while being on the less popular console on the market this time around. It's the Amazing Spider-Man to the Avengers, Frozens and Transformers of the world.

MCC has Halo CE, CE Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4 campaigns. They all run at 60 fps and 1080p now, except the new Halo 2 Anniversary campaign which uses next gen assets.

It has CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4 and Halo 2 Anniversary multiplayer, all running at 1080p/60fps,and each of the games will have both joint and dedicated playlists. Obviously they'll see which is more popular, what fans want, and change them.
 
Destiny's sales suggest HALO is still very relevant. Would the game had sold (and continue to sell) as well if not for Bungie's pedigree with Master Chief?

The game even feels like HALO... maybe that's why, despite it's flaws, it's so damned difficult to put down.

Halo 4 is really weird. I don't know how to describe it exactly but you know when you play a game that's really smooth and just feels right? Well, you won't find very many people who say Halo 4 isn't the best Halo for that yet. As for the SP, it's probably the most loved component of the game.

It's the multiplayer that's pretty universally panned by its fans.

So Halo 4 is really mixed, you won't find very many people who won't say that's a great game, but you will see people saying it's not the greatest Halo game. And there's quite the difference between the two.

IMO, I thought Halo 4 was amazing but I still wanted more traditional multiplayer for it.

Cool, I edited my response above but you already addressed my question really well. Thanks. I'm not hyped for MCC yet, but lets say I'm intrigued by the possibilities. I used to play Halo for the campaigns, but if MP is redone right n tight I might get excited about this collection...

I know exactly what you're talking about. Dammit! Now I want to play 4 to see n feel it for myself...but the completionist in me wont allow it until I finish 3 first. :)~ I have a feeling ill fall into the "I love Halo 4 SP" camp since most of the plot-based complaints I've heard are very subjective. However, I've heard that the MP is objectively pretty bad. It'll be interesting to see what happens when the MCC drops, to follow MP numbers for each game. It's the perfect live experiment to find out what people like the most.

Notice how you didn't specify what mode?

Attrition and campaign. None of the others work. PC is deader than that.
 
Halo is one of the few franchises that has recognition in popular culture. Just like mario, people who don't/barely game tend to at least recognize the Chief.

I think that Halo 5 will bring a lot of fans back. CoD is much closer to being burnt out, typical activation style, so I easily see Halo being the #1 title on xbox again.

I think the other media aspects of the Halo franchise give it extra strength. FUD was decent for a small budget, and nightfall looks good too, and there is still the mysterious spielberg project waiting out there.

I think there are a lot of people who enjoyed halo 4 for the story and single player campaign (which I and many others who played thought was top notch). It looks like 343 is atoning for its multiplayer sins and 5 will be a true return to form.

With proper marketing and support, Halo could be only on the rise to greater heights. It is a franchise that has a lot of power to pull people to the XB1, especially after many were disappointed in Destiny.

i don't think they have much to do with Halo 2 Anniversary.

While 343 designed the interfaces and online networking, Certain Affinity developed the multiplayer and Saber developed the updated Halo 2 campaign.[3] The updated Halo 2 cutscenes were produced by Blur.
