Sony vs Microsoft: The First Party Studios

I think this is more a "games not on the other platform" list, rather than a first party list. And if that's the case then, the PS4 is missing a a lot of games.

It's gotten to the point that the big AAA 60$ games from either company's first party has almost no excitement for me.

Out of all the FIRST party exclusives last gen for both companies combined the only ones I liked alot were Forza 3/4 and Resistance 2. Thats it for 60$ games

Well, not "easily", but even win... but I think Grim Fandango HD will be the best remaster of this gen... another console exclusive...

Best in what sense? Because it's definitely not going to be a commercially successful game. Grim Fandango was the nail in LucasArts coffin, it killed their adventure game development because it sold so very very poorly. Fancy graphics aren't gonna change the fact that this is way too strange to be a seller to the masses. To compare it to the MCC is a bit ambitious. One is going to sell a few 10k copies, the other is gonna sell a few 500k copies. Grim Fandango goes against Phantom Dust in how bad they're gonna sell and how much they are fan service.

Sorry the original OP was completely different so I guess the thread needs a title change as it isn't just first party games. As for digital games I have only done F2P. I will get around to digital games as that will be way harder to list so I would need some time to do it

Is this sarcasm? I mean... do you really think "sales" define if a game is good or not?

Yup, listen to this man. This is why CoD is quite literally the best game ever. I mean look at all those sales! Stuff like Dark Souls is crap, I mean they barely sell what, 2 million?

After having both consoles last gen, I preordered both last year... Then 2 months later my gf tells me she is expecting our second child. So only one console for me. I was also lurking on GAF when every day it was disaster after disaster for the xbone..

I kept both my preorders until the last minute, and weighed up everything before I purchased. For me there was no way I could live without halo, gears etc, whereas there was is nothing exclusive on the ps4 that makes/ has made me regret my purchase.

Opinions and all, especially to the people saying "no contest" and shit like that. Everyone's taste is different.

What if you are like me and don't think that their games are worth buying the system for???

Then you are like everybody else that doesn't think that.

Isn't this thread about first party? Most ONE exclusives haven't been developed by their studios

The thing is, if we went by that criteria, and actually only counted real exclusives (as in, games you can't play anywhere else), the X1 list would be practically empty. It'd be just Halo/Fable/Forza/Gears (as always)

I think it's better to just compare the games that are exclusive, regardless of who made them. I haven't spent a single cent on the X1 yet I've played DR3, Ryse, TF, and PVZ all this year, and I'll likely get FH2 as well. Not to mention, I can pop in Halo whenever I feel like playing them.

Same applies to the Sony list. PS3/PS4, and PC/PS4 titles shouldn't be there, to even things out.

This is all personal opinion. While Sony may have a bigger list, I far enjoy Microsoft first party games more than Sony's. That is just me and not bias. Having played both exclusives, I have more fun with Microsoft content.

IMO Sony games I enjoy is Uncharted and TLOU. With MS, I don't need to list but Halo, Forza imo is better quality than Sony's racers with solid presentations, Gears, Dead Rising I really enjoyed and still think its underrated, heck even the middle tier Fable 2 and 3 games were more fun compared to the blandness of KillZone.

Again that is just me.

With Sunset Overdrive coming, I feel it is one of the most unique IPs in sometime I'm looking forward to instead of the usual AC, COD, etc., I want to play first.

Sony started later than Microsoft. Last year, Xbox 360 was pretty much dead for exclusives and Sony had a brilliant support on PS3. So next year, Sony will be completely focused on PS4, the gap will increase.

Lol you don't have to preface an opinion.

Might as well join in...

Not all the Sony games are first party, so it seems to be exclusives qualified as not being on Xbox? If so, you're missing quite a few games on the Xbone side...

Retail games:
Zoo Tycoon (also on 360 and PC)
Kinect Sports Rivals
Project Spark (also on 360 and PC)
Fantasia Music Evolved (also on 360)
Ori and the Blind Forest (also on 360 and PC)
Screamride (also on 360)
State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition

F2P:
Happy Wars (also on 360 and PC)
Smite (also on PC)
Neverwinter (confirmed for Xbox and PC only at this time)

Games not yet officially announced:
Twisted Pixel New IP
Lionhead Team 2 New IP
Press Play New Game
LiftLondon New F2P IPs 1, 2, 3, 4 (on "connected" platforms)

Digital games (when you end up adding this category):
Powerstar Golf
Crimson Dragon
LocoCycle (also on 360 and PC)
Max and The Curse of Brotherhood (also on PC)
Super Time Force (also on 360 and PC)
Dance Central Spotlight
Dark Dreams Don't Die (D4)
Below (also on PC)

For me it comes down to Sony willing to put out a diverse range of games - from artsy games, to big budget action blockbusters.

If you own a Sony console you can be guaranteed by the end of its lifetime to have had some amazing selection of games - it also doesn't hurt to have the likes of Naughty Dog & Santa Monica pushing out amazing games.

So comparing the first year of output isn't a true representation of each platforms holders output - especially when Sony had a fantastic output in 2013.

Phil Spencer also said recently that out of these games there working on a couple of them

I think halo wars 2 and the rare games are the most likely.

Halo Wars 2
Alan Wake 2
Blinx
Mech Assault
Fusion Frenzy
Banjo Kazooie
High Heat
Kameo 2
Otogi
Knights of the Old Republic
Shenmue
Conker

, and you missed zoo tycoon

This is a concern for a lot of people with Microsoft and the X1. people say since 2010 the 360 support died off,but it didnt they just focused a large chunk of money and resources on kinect. Judging by the market reaction to kinect with X1 and the philosophy of Phil Spencer, I think he really understands the importance of core AAA franchises and a balanced portfolio. This generation I think Phil and the rest of the MS team wont be so quick to green light every kinect project and there lager studios will bee working strictly in the AAA core space with kinect integration only. With the 360, and the beginning of the the X1 generation MS rested on there laurels and it showed them the success of the kinect 1 was due to the massive install base of the 360 and the new/gimmick factor, not a long term sustainable business model.

So far Sony has produced quite a few AAA exclusives via WWS

Killzone, Infamous, DriveClub, Knack, TLOU : Remastered, MLB : The Show

So far Microsoft's WWS has produced, Forza 5, Forza Horizon, Killer Instinct .... anything else?

MCC is hitting later. Fable Legends maybe?

Only difference being, all the above Sony games cannot be found elsewhere. FH2 and Fable can.

Limiting it to just 1st party studios severely cripples the PS4's exclusive lineup. We don't know what most of their 1st party studios are working on.

They constantly hire developers to make games for them (Rime, Bloodborne, WiLD, The Tomorrow Children, Everybody's Gone to Rapture, etc) and gets exclusives from 3rd party Japanese developers (Guilty Gear Xrd, Persona 5, DQ Heroes, Ys, Tales of, etc).

The same applies to the Xbox One. Off the top of my head, Forza 5, Forza Horizon 2, Halo MCC, Halo 5, Fable Legends, Gears of War, Lococycle, and Max are/were the games from their 1st party studios.

Yep. Looking at those lists just reminds me that selling my xbox one last month and going with the ps4 as my primary platform was the right decision because there werent any xbox one exclusives coming that I was interested in.
Meanwhile, on the ps4 I'm looking forward to:
Bloodborne
Deep Down
Uncharted 4
Hot Shots Golf
Planetside 2
Ratchet And Clank
The Order

Is H1Z1 and Planetside 2 even out? I don't think it is but I just want confirmation.

Nope, we are still waiting on PS2 and i'm not sure if the PC Version of H1Z1 is even out. But if it's true that Planetside will run at 60FPS and High Settings/Ultra?, then it's worth the wait imo.

its not always the case but I feel like MS games are made by committee where Sony games have a producer that has a vision and the game is left in his/her hands for better or worse. The result is a much more interesting catalogue of games on Sonys side.

Sony has been off to a relatively slow start and its been more of the same for MS. Going forward I am definitely more excited for Sonys exclusives like Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 and GT7. Speaking of, GT games always feel like an event where Forza games are predictable and less exciting, if not consistent in quality.

Lastly you know Sony will have the advantage as time goes on due to their larger stable of parties and I know MS will abandon their system well before Sony.

If you remove the insane number of Kinect games, you are left with Forza, Fable, Halo & Gears, and MS don't see any reason to change that. You had 2 Forza games in the first year of the X1, Fable Anniversary is coming soon, we have a Halo MCC, then Halo 5 next year, and we know their is another Gears of War coming. It seems Microsoft is content with letting it's 1st party studio pump out the same franchise again and again.

The PS3 support for 2014 is probably more populated, but the 360 had a pretty good year

with these + multiplats, its not abandoned, yet. games are still selling well on the platform.

They are because they have 2nd and 3rd party studios/deals to fill the void, Sony are also content in letting 1st party reuse the same I.P and theres nothing wrong with that. Exclusives are exclusives and good games are good games at the end of the day

Wow that Microsoft list is really flat imo.
Does anyone think they'll even try and get those exclusive JRPGs this gen? That's the only way I can see myself buying an X1.

Maybe because it deserves the mockery?

VS threads are a crapshoot by default. And imo Sony is the king of first party, but I think the mockery has nothing to do with being a fan of anything.

Nah, it has to do with the fact that KAL has moved the goal posts to make sure the PS4 list is bigger. While making the PS4 list as comprehensive as possible with his new qualifiers he has failed to update the Xbox One list to its fullest based on the same qualifications.

I thought I'd update this thread, with many people making their decision this holiday on which console to buy. Maybe this would be helpful. Note that I haven't added PSN/XBLA games to the list which I will do later.

yeah,no comparison's
the PS4 is the machine to get this holiday season at bargain. I've never played GTA V or the last of us. Early 2015 is all about bloodborn, and the final fantasy 15 demo.
